Enhanced high-temperature strength of a Mg-4Sn-3Al-1 Zn alloy with good thermal stability via Mg2Sn precipitation

With the growing demand for rapid and cost-effective solutions for lightweight magnesium alloys with excellent high-temperature mechanical properties, we investigated a heat-treatable RE-free magnesium alloy, Mg-4Sn-3Al-1Zn (TAZ431, wt.%), with remarkable thermal stability. The peak-aged TAZ431 alloy exhibits a 15 % increase in high-temperature (230 °C) yield strength, compared to the traditional commercial magnesium alloy, Mg-3Al-1Zn (AZ31, wt.%). In this work, we demonstrate that the basal Mg2Sn precipitates have a more pronounced hindrance effect on the non-basal slip systems, as evidenced by a combination of experiments (in-situ EBSD and dual beam TEM) and numerical simulations (Orowan model and VPSC). The distribution and morphology of Mg2Sn precipitates and cracks are quantitatively analyzed using a range of techniques including in-situ SEM and synchrotron X-ray tomography. Our results reveal that the decohension of grain boundary precipitates significantly promotes the formation of intergranular cracks, leading to ultimate fracture. The research comprehensively explains the impact of particle morphology, orientation, and distribution on precipitation strengthening and fracture modes at elevated temperatures, which is vital for the future development of high-temperature performance magnesium alloys. © 2025

Radial magnetic field in magnetic confinement device

The intrinsic radial magnetic field（B r） in a tokamak is explored by the solution of the Grad–Shafranov equation in axisymmetric configurations through an expansion of the four terms of the magnetic surfaces. It can be inferred from the simulation results that at the core of the device, the tokamak should possess a three-dimensional magnetic field configuration, which could be reduced to a two-dimensional one when the radial position is greater than 0.6a. The radial magnetic field and the amzimuthal magnetic field have the same order of magnitude at the core of the device. These results can offer a reference for the analysis of the plasma instability, the property of the core plasma, and the magnetic field measurement.

Distributed Temperature Sensor(DTS)based on Raman scattering have a promising application in temperature monitoring and quench detection of high‐temperature superconducting(HTS)fiber optic *** this paper,a series of mechanical property tests were carried out on fiber optical cables with different encapsulation materials to select the best material for the engineering *** was followed by loss testing of fiber optic cables with different outer diameters under liquid nitrogen(LN_(2))and the optimal outer diameter to meet measurement accuracy and engineering practicability was ***,the temperature measurement of fiber optic cables laid on HTS fiber optic cables were calibrated using thermocouple as a *** results of this research results provide a suitable fiber optic cable for engineering *** the same time,it provides a reference for the selection of optical cable structure parameters in HTS optical cable projects.

Role of strontium and associated particle enrichment in Si purification using Al-Si-Sr solvent refining

This study provides a comprehensive investigation into the occurrence forms of Sr and its effect on Si purification during Al-30 wt%Si solvent refining, with varying Sr additions. The microstructure of the Al-Si alloy, the impurity content of purified Si, and the precipitation of impurity phases were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), and supported by thermodynamic calculations, respectively. Microstructural analysis revealed that Sr modification induced notable morphological changes in the Si phase. The Sr in purified Si is categorized into three distinct forms: (i) Sr atoms that induce Si modification, (ii) Sr atoms dissolved within the Si crystals, and (iii) the P-containing Al2Si2Sr (major). Excessive Sr addition facilitated the significant precipitation of P-rich Al2Si2Sr phases at the solidification front of primary Si. These Al2Si2Sr phases not only reduced the P content (Sr ≥ 8000 ppmw, ηP ≥ 87.3 %) in the melt but also interacted with the growing Si crystals at the interface. The high consumption of P in the melt ensures that purified Si can achieve a high P removal efficiency at a rapid cooling rate. Although leaching treatment removed the Al2Si2Sr phases, residual Sr atoms, either dissolved within the Si matrix or incorporated into the Si crystal structure through modifying effects, were largely resistant to removal by such processes. This study provides an alternative perspective for the impurity control of purified Si via Al–Si-Sr solvent refining to produce solar-grade Si (SoG-Si). © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Electrocaloric (EC) refrigeration in nanocomposites provides sustainable heating and cooling through its excellent entropy change when applied or withdraw an electric field. Nonetheless, it's difficult to achieve a large EC performance under low electric fields since ferroelectrics have relatively low thermal conductivity and small diabatic temperature change. In this work, we design an EC nanocomposite by incorporating 12%[0.68(BaZr0.2Ti0.8O3)-0.32(Ba0.7Ca0.3TiO3)] (BCZT) nanoparticles with significant ferroelectric properties and 7%Boron Nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) with notable electrical insulation and ultra-high thermal conductivity into relaxor ferroelectric terpolymer P(VDF-TrFE-CFE), aiming to improve ECE performance and increase cooling power density of the nanocomposite. We attain an adiabatic temperature change (ΔT) of 8.85K, isothermal entropy change (ΔS) of 30.10J·kg-1·K-1 and isothermal cooling energy density (Q) of up to 5.10×107J·m-3 under a low electric field of 80 MV/m by direct method, which is an order of magnitude larger than those of other EC materials reported so far. The introduced interfacial coupling effect between ceramic and terpolymer plays a very important role to ECE, which modulates their polarization, microscale electric-dipoles changes, and energy conversion behavior, simultaneously improves the cooling power density of nanocomposite. Furthermore, the heat transfer performance of nanocomposite is simulated using Finite-element method (FEM) to investigate their heat transfer properties based on the solid-state heat transfer theory. The phase-field simulation has demonstrated the nanocomposite still possesses impressive ferroelectric properties under the influence of elastic compressive strain based on time-dependent Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (TLGD) theory. This research is of significant importance for achieving precise thermal management of the next-generation microelectronic devices. © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Microbubble-Enhanced Plasma Water Nitrogen Fixation and its Impact on Plant Growth

Nitrogen is vital for agriculture, but traditional methods like the Haber-Bosch process are energy-intensive and harmful to the environment. This study utilizes Plasma-Activated Microbubble (PAMB) technology to improve nitrogen fixation efficiency by enhancing gas-liquid interaction. PAMB increased nitrate concentration from 170 mg/L to 215 mg/L while reducing energy use by 17%. Applied to soil and hydroponic systems, PAMB products boosted growth, with hydroponics achieving higher biomass and soil cultivation supporting healthier root structures. These results highlight PAMB's potential for sustainable, efficient, and decentralized fertilizer production, offering an innovative path for agricultural development. © 2025 Wiley-VCH GmbH.

Physical design of FEL injector based on the performance-enhanced EC-ITC RF gun

To meet the requirements of high performance THz-FEL （Free Electron Laser）, a compact scheme of FEL injector was proposed. A thermionic cathode was chosen to emit electrons instead of a photo-cathode with its complex structure and high cost. The effective bunch charge was improved to ~200 pC by adopting an enhanced EC-ITC （External Cathode Independently Tunable Cells） RF gun to extract micro-bunches; back bombardment effects were almost eliminated as well. Constant gradient accelerator structures were designed to improve energy to ~14 MeV, while the focusing system was applied for emittance suppressing and bunch state maintenance. The physical design and beam dynamics of the key components for the FEL injector were analyzed. Furthermore, start- to-end simulations with multi-pulses were performed using homemade MATlab and Parmela. The results show that continual high brightness electron bunches with a low energy spread and emittance could be obtained stably.

A permanent magnet electron beam spread system used for a low energy electron irradiation accelerator

The development of irradiation processing industry brings about various types of irradiation objects and expands the irradiation requirements for better uniformity and larger areas. This paper proposes an innovative design of a permanent magnet electron beam spread system. By clarifying its operation principles, the author verifies the feasibility of its application in irradiation accelerators for industrial use with the examples of its application in electron accelerators with energy ranging from 300 keV to 1 MeV. Based on the finite element analyses of electromagnetic fields and the charged particle dynamics, the author also conducts a simulation of electron dynamics in magnetic field on a computer. The results indicate that compared with the traditional electron beam scanning system, this system boosts the advantages of a larger spread area, non-power supply, simple structure and low cost, etc., which means it is not only suitable for the irradiation of objects with the shape of tubes, strips and panels, but can also achieve a desirable irradiation performance on irregular constructed objects of large size.

Character Diagnosis for Surface-Wave Plasmas Excited by Surface Plasmon Polaritons

The plasma parameters of planar-type surface-wave plasmas （SWPs） are diagnosed based on the resonant excitation of surface plasmon polaritons （SPPs）. The plasma parameter distributions are obtained by changing the discharge conditions of gas pressure and incident power. The measured experimental results show that the plasma near the heating layer is excited by surface waves of SPPs while the plasma located downstream originates from diffusion Moreover, the influence of high-frequency oscillations plays a significant role in producing the proposed SWPs with bi-Maxwellian electron energy distributions.

LIF diagnostics of hydroxyl radical in a methanol containing atmospheric-pressure plasma jet

In this paper, a pulsed-dc CH;OH/Ar plasma jet generated at atmospheric pressure is studied by laser-induced fluorescence（LIF） and optical emission spectroscopy（OES）. A gas–liquid bubbler system is proposed to introduce the methanol vapor into the argon gas, and the CH3OH/Ar volume ratio is kept constant at about 0.1%. Discharge occurs in a 6-mm needle-to-ring gap in an atmospheric-pressure CH;OH/Ar mixture. The space-resolved distributions of OH LIF inside and outside the nozzle exhibit distinctly different behaviors. And, different production mechanisms of OH radicals in the needle-to-ring discharge gap and afterglow of plasma jet are discussed. Besides, the optical emission lines of carbonaceous species, such as CH, CN, and C;radicals, are identified in the CH;OH/Ar plasma jet. Finally, the influences of operating parameters（applied voltage magnitude, pulse frequency, pulsewidth） on the OH radical density are also presented and analyzed.
