Under the background of transmitting thermal power via UHV transmission line from Mengxi to Hubei in the long-term planning, this paper analyzed Hubei power grid's peak load regulation scheme which Mengxi UHVDC involved in. Based on the energy-efficient power generation scheduling approach and multiple constraints of units, a peak load regulation scheme under the coordinated operation of thermal power, hydropower, pumped-storage and UHVDC power in a calculating level year was given. It is indicated that the peak regulation capacity shortage problem in Hubei is solved effectively with Mengxi UHVDC integration.

Combining switching characteristics of power electronic devices and state transitions in carrier phase-shifted SPWM (CPS-SPWM), this paper uses graphic stateflow toolbox of Matlab/Simulink to design the process of CPS-SPWM. Then it is applied to STATCOM which is integrated with distribution transformer (DT-STATCOM) for PWM signal generation. Simulation results are presented to prove that the method is valid and effective for reactive power compensation. Meanwhile, software-in-loop (SIL) test and automatic code generation are also carried out. Results of experimental test with DSP TMSF28335 have validated the theoretical contributions of the paper. PWM signal comparison of both simulation and experiment result shows that this method has both the feasibility and effectiveness of software and hardware design. With this method, design of CPS-SPWM can be more rapid, efficient and convenient.

A consequent pole, dual rotor, axial flux vernier permanent magnet (VPM) machine is developed to reduce magnet usage and increase torque density. Its end winding length is much shorter than that of regular VPM machines due to its toroidal winding configuration. The configurations and features of the proposed machine are discussed. Benefited from its vernier and consequent pole structure, this new machine exhibits much higher back-EMF and torque density than that of a regular dual rotor axial flux machine, while the magnet usage is halved. The influence of main design parameters, such as slot opening, ratio of inner to outer stator diameter, magnet thickness etc., on torque performance is analyzed based on the quasi-3-dimensional (quasi-3D) finite element analysis (FEA). The analyzing results are validated by real 3D FEA.

High quality single crystalline VO(A) nanowires were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method using oxalic acid as reducing agent and polyethylene glycol 6000 as surfactant. It was found that polyethylene glycol 6000 can effectively accelerate the transformation from VO precursor to VO(B), and there is no intermediate phase VO·HO formed. Thus less time and lower temperature were needed in our hydrothermal method. The investigation of growth mechanism indicates an oriented attachment growth process in the hydrothermal system. In addition, the temperature-dependent optical switching properties have been studied. The results show that VO(A) nanowires exhibit distinct temperature-dependent optical switching properties, which can be potentially explored for optical switching devices.

Torque ripple is a major concern in interior permanent magnet (IPM) machines, which is usually above 20% in conventional IPM machines, and for some cases, such as spindle motors, this value is too high to be accepted. In this paper, armature windings with fractional-slot per pole pair are employed to reduce the torque ripple. First, it is theoretically explained why this windings are helpful to lower torque ripple without the cost of average torque. Then, the effect of slot pole combinations on torque ripple is investigated. Moreover, the electromagnetic performance, such as back EMF, cogging torque, and torque ripple of an IPM machine with the proposed windings is compared to that of the IPM machine with conventional integral-slot distributed windings (ISDW). It is shown that the cogging torque of IPM machine with fractional-slot per pole pair windings could be as low as 0.2%, and torque ripple is only 3% without any other special measures such as skew or dummy slots.

Various topologies for fully superconducting machines were analyzed and compared in this paper. The cryogenic system, electromagnetic design, and winding mechanical support were investigated in details. Furthermore, the existing topologies are overviewed in terms of pros and corns. Then, a novel fully superconducting machine topology-fully superconducting geared machine is proposed, which is proved to be with higher torque density than that of regular full superconducting topologies and contactless torque transfer capability.

In this paper, a spoke-type IPM motor (buried with circumferentially magnetized magnets) with fractional-slot concentrated windings is designed to block the two-pole sub-harmonic and, thus, reduce the iron core losses and torque ripple. This is demonstrated by the comparison of a conventional V-type IPM configuration and a designed spoke-type machine. Both of them have 12-slot/10-pole configurations with the same stator structure. The simulation results indicate that under the same design specifications, the spoke-type motor has less magnet consumption and exhibits much smaller iron core losses and torque ripple than that of its V-type counterpart, especially when operated at high speed. Finally, the mechanical stress of the designed spoke-type machine rotor is analyzed by finite element analysis.
