Waveband switching (WBS) is proposed as a promising technique to reduce the number of switching ports, which could translate to the switching fabric size and cost of the nodes in the dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) network. We propose a routing and wavelength/waveband (RWA) heuristic algorithm, called Maximize the Number of Waveband Route (MNWR) for the dynamic arriving traffic demands in the multi-granularity WBS opticalnetwork. We study the performance of various MG-OXC architectures including the serial three-stage MG-OXC and the interconnecting three-stage MG-OXC proposed by our group employing the on-line MNWR algorithm. Simulation results indicate that the interconnecting three-stage MG-OXC outperforms the serial three-stage architecture in terms of blocking performance for dynamic requests.

The shape of the Web in terms of its graphical structure has been a widely interested topic. Two graphs, Bow Tie and Daisy, have stood out from previous research. In this work, we take a different approach, by viewing the Web as a hierarchy of three levels, namely page level, host level, and domain level. Such structures are analyzed and compared with a snapshot of Chinese Web in early 2006, involving 830 million pages, 17 million hosts, and 0.8 million domains. Some interesting results have emerged. For example, the Chinese Web appears more like a teapot (with a large size of SCC, a medium size of IN and a small size of OUT) at page level than the classic bow tie or daisy shape. Some challenging phenomena are also observed. For example, the INs become much smaller than OUTs at host and domain levels. Future work will tackle these puzzles.

An unsymmetrical quantum key distribution protocol is proposed, in which Greenherger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) triplet states are used to obtain the secret key. Except the lost qubits due to the unperfectness of the physical devices, the unsymmetrical characteristic makes all transmitted qubits useful. This leads to:an excellent efficiency, which reaches 100% in an ideal case. The 'security is studied from the aspect of information theory. By using the correlation of the GHZ tripartite entanglement state, eavesdropping can be easily checked out, which indicates that the presented protocol is more secure.

The interpolatory edge operator is applied to the recognition of cotton and ramie fibers. Its performance is studied in comparison with the Canny edge operator in the fiber’s edge detection for cross-sectional image. The input image is interpolated other than Gaussian function smoothing. The quality of edge output is improved by the interpolatory edge operator. It produces edge output with good continuity for low-resolution input. The fine edge output, such as cross-markings, can be distinguished clearly, so the interpolatory edge operator is suitable for the study of cotton and ramie fibers. Furthermore, the application of the interpolatory edge operator can cut the hardware cost, reduce the storage and speed up the data transmission.
