A hybrid wavelength division multiple access （WDMA）/optical code division multiplexing （OCDM） system is proposed, where the optical code is not the same as the address of every opticalnetwork unit （ONU）; rather, the code is a virtual fiber of hybrid passive opticalnetwork （PON）. To our knowledge, this is the first report analyzing a single encoder/decoder with a single corresponding optical code being exploited to encode/decode multiple wavelength signals simultaneously. This system enables OCDM to become transparent to ONU so that the existing wavelength division multiplexing （WDM） PON can be upgraded. Thus, redesigning the optical line terminal and ONU can be easily accomplished, and greatly decreasing the number of encoder/decoder becomes possible. In experiment, we only employ two encoder/decoder pairs to combine two WDM-PONs in one fiber. Simulation results confirm the feasibility of the proposed system.

We demonstrated the superluminal propagation at negative group velocity using stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in optical fibers. In the scheme, the Stokes wave is circulated back into the ring cavity for Brillouin lasing to enhance the peak loss. The experiment demonstrated the superluminal light propagation can be realized by increasing the input signal power. The largest time advancement of 221.2ns has been observed. Correspondingly, the negative group velocity is -0.15c and the group index is -6.636.

For real-time massive data aggregations, we propose a WDM backbone-access network and design an integrated OADMOLT interface node to realize all-optical connections between the backbone and the access networks. Under such a network infrastructure, we formulate a Light-path-Assignment and Time-Scheduling (LATS) problem for the massive data aggregation application.
