In this paper, a simple technique to realize frequency quadrupling and upconversion in a radio over fiber (RoF) link is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The frequency quadrupling is achieved by a single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) which is biased at the peak of the transmission curve and driven by a radio frequency (RF) signal with an amplitude swing of ∼3.06Vπ, where Vπ is the half-wave voltage of the MZM.

We demonstrate a reconfigurable all-optical logic gate based on predominant nonlinear polarization rotation effect in a single semiconductor optical amplifier. The principle of operation is explained in detail. Five reconfigurable logic functions, including NOT, OR, NOR, AND, and NAND, were realized using 10-Gb/s on-off keying signals with flexible wavelength tenability. The logic operations were achieved by adjusting polarization controllers and the input data power.

We propose a bidirectional radio over fiber (RoF) system for simultaneous generation and transmission of amplitude shift keying (ASK), optical carrier suppressed amplitude shift keying (OCS-ASK) and frequency shift keying (FSK) signals based on one single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). The feasibility of the proposal is verified by experiments and error-free performances are achieved for all the data.

Driven by the benefit of improved network reliability (through protection or fast failure recovery) and reduced network OPEX, an increasing amount of GMPLS enabled networks are now being deployed in metro area and even in national backbones. In the short run, the deployment of such networks will enable network operators to provide new value added services such as Bandwidth on Demand (BoD) with a reduced OPEX. In the long run, GMPLS networks have the potential of carrying a big variety of services. In this article we try to highlight the current status in the research community and the challenges for such a trend.

In this paper, an atomic system is suggested to be embedded in the fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) to reduce the group velocity and to eliminate the dispersion of slow light. We demonstrate numerically that the pulse can be transmitted at the group velocity 0.147c dispersionlessly in the FBG, compared with 0.193c and 56% of FWHM broadening without the atomic system.
