Purpose - A fast algorithm is proposed to calculate the lightning electromagnetic field over a perfectly conducting earth surface. Design/methodology/approach - The channel base current is approximated by a number of sub-domain quadratic functions using the proposed adaptive sampling technique, and the derivative and integral of the channel base current with respect to time can be analytically expressed. With the help of these approximations, the ideal electromagnetic field of the lightning channel can be evaluated along the lightning channel with respect to the height. Findings - The computational time can be greatly reduced using the proposed approach to evaluate the electromagnetic field of a lightning channel in the time domain. Originality/value - The adaptive sampling technique is a general-purposed approach, which can be potentially used in other applications to fit a function with the minimal number of intervals. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

A novel protection scheme for two-phase faults in power distribution system with neutral ungrounded is presented. The feasibility of tripping single-phase circuit when a phase-tophase or two-phase-to-ground fault occurs is studied with induction motor loads as the focus. The paper at first analyses the effect of a induction motor runs with one phase cut off theoretically. And then a real power distribution system model with 110kV, 35kV and 6kV voltage levels is built in PSCAD/EMTDC. Three feasibility criteria are proposed for motors in continuous operation with single-phase opened. At last, the novel protection scheme is testified in simulation with protection time and reclosing time as variables respectively. The results verify that the scheme is feasible and power supply reliability is improved.

A fast electric field integral in time domain using the uneven discretization and the implicit scheme is proposed to calculate the switching electromagnetic transient at a substation. The switching transient currents and the resultant radiated electromagnetic field are calculated. The propose d approach has the strength to model the bus system at a substation with a more complicated and realistic configuration that is difficult to simulate using the circuit-based method, because all the electromagnetic couplings within the bus system are included globally. The proposed method might be one of good candidates to predicate the EMI level at a substation. © 2012 IEEE.

The wide-band oscillation resulting from the interaction between power electronics and the power grid is increasingly evident to the power system. It is necessary to monitor the dynamic behavior of the wide-band oscillation. However, the existing phasor measurement unit (PMU) and the corresponding wide-area measurement system (WAMS) can hardly capture wide-band phasors. To get a better view of wide-band oscillation, a measurement method to capture wide-band phasors is proposed in this paper, as well as a frame of a corresponding wide-area monitoring system for wide-band oscillation (WOMS) is constructed. The prototype of the wide-band phasor measurement unit (WPMU)-based on this measurement method is developed. The essential software and hardware of the WPMU are elaborated. The steady tests and dynamic tests are executed to verify the capability of the WPMU. The results indicate that WPMU and WOMS are highly effective in analyzing wide-band oscillation. © 2022 IEEE.

very-fast transient overvoltage (VFTO)-related problems are raising growing concerns in China with the development of ultra-high voltage. The practice of fitting ferrite rings on gas-insulated switchgear busbars for VFTO mitigation has long been proposed but few investigations on its design optimization were conducted. Based on theoretical analysis of the simplified model, the optimal damping condition of ferrite rings is proposed, which is conducive to the type selection. The number of rings to be employed to ensure visible suppressing effects is given through simulations and the influence of the saturation is discussed. Impact on the power frequency is analyzed to be negligible. Finally, comparisons are made between the theoretical conclusions and existing experiment results, which approve the optimal damping condition and agree with the number of rings to be employed. © 2014 IEEE.

Electrical tree break-down is the major failure problem in cable accessories, however, mechanisms of the electrical tree initiation and propagation are still lack of deeply research, especially in silicone rubber (SIR) which is widely used as insulation material for cable accessories. Long-term aging (0- 1000 h) experiments under the different voltages were conducted to observe electrical tree initiation and propagation processes. In trees initiation stage, with increasing of applied voltage, electrical tree initiation probability becomes larger, while tree initiation time dramatically decreases. The experiment observations demonstrated four shapes of trees which are dominated. As applied voltage increasing, the numbers of electrical trees life-cycles increased and exponential relationship was found between tree length and magnitude of applied voltage. It is noted that charges, whose energy exceeding a certain critical value, destroy microstructure of dielectric accumulatively via injection and extraction, and cause electrical trees initiate when it accumulates to a visible extent. © 2016 IEEE.

Paralleling SiC MOSFETs is a popular way to increase the current capacity. However, due to asymmetric layout, device parameter mismatch and other factors, imbalanced switching or dynamic current is observed among the paralleled switches in multi-device paralleling application which results in unequal switching loss, challenging the security and reliability of the system. In this paper, a common-mode choke in the gate loop is proposed and analyzed to suppress the imbalanced switching current induced by asymmetric layout in a half-bridge configuration with a Kelvin-source connection. The mechanism of the proposed method is comprehensively investigated to show that though the common-mode choke is placed in the gate loop, it can also mitigate the imbalanced current caused by asymmetric power loop. And it also shows that only the leakage inductance of the choke is seen in the gate loop and thus the switching speed is not expected to be influenced. The proposed method can be easily extended to multi-device paralleling application and the switching transients is hardly influenced by the common-mode choke. simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the proposed method.

As the penetration rate of renewable energy in the utility grid increases, large-scale energy storage system (ESS) will become an essential infrastructure in the grid. Reversible solid oxide fuel cell (RSOFC) technology is a promising solution for large-scale ESS. However, the wide voltage range and low power of single RSOFC stack electrical characteristics have complicated the interface converter design. It is necessary to connect multiple stacks through a power conversion system to integrate the power because a single stack of RSOFC is small. This paper proposes a power conversion system for large-scale RSOFC ESS. The system consists of a cascaded H-bridge (CHB) converter and multiple multiport converters, and they are connected to a common dc bus. Because of the electrical characteristics of RSOFC, a two-stage CLLC based multiport converter topology is employed to achieve high voltage gain and operate at a wide voltage range. The control strategy of the proposed power conversion system is presented. simulation tests verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed conversion system

Commutation failure (CF) is one of the major concerns in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system. Of many methods to mitigate CF, advancing firing angle is preferred one since it can be easily implemented in current HVDC controllers without extra hardware modification. However, methods in previous works either lack for quantitative analysis or based on much strong hypothesis. In this paper, we propose a novel CF mitigation method based on improved commutation area. The salient feature of proposed strategy is that DC current is not considered as a constant under fault conditions. simulations on PSCAD/EMTDC software demonstrate the good performance of proposed method.
