The power network in China is encountering great changes and large-scale network is increasingly implemented for long distance power transmission as well as various kinds of power electronic devices, which bring in the risk of the torsional vibration of the turbine generator shafts, may cause the fatigue damage and cracks in the product life cycle. The paper analyzed the failed coupling of some 600MW steam turbine generator and calculated the local stress of the assembly under torsional load caused by the network disturbance. Then the crack propagation was analyzed with the predicted crack initiation position and crack propagation routine. The assembled coupling contains shaft, coupling and keys with interferences between the parts. Therefore the contact analysis was included. Extended Finite Element Method (X-FEM) is used to calculate the crack propagation and that the mesh needs not to be regenerated with the crack propagation, which is beneficial for engineering applications.

The cracks emerged in a fossil-fired power plant in China in 2008 and several similar crack accidents had been detected in nuclear turbines in USA before. The possible causes of the cracks are analyzed in previous study while the torsional vibration is one of the most significant factors. The paper analyzes the impact of torsional vibration using the practical running data in some turbine generator unit. Based on the transient response analysis under emulational subsynchronous oscillation model simplified from the practical network, the torques acted on the coupling section are analyzed. Then the stress and strain field is calculated for local dangerous point search in Zone of Vulnerability (ZoV) and the fatigue damage criterion determination. Manson-Coffin equation is used to ascertain whether it is high-cycle fatigue or low-cycle fatigue and the fatigue data from standard test specimen is used. The method using local stress and strain analysis as well as fatigue damage cumulation study may establish a novel way to diagnose the crack in an early stage.

The most widely applied method for detecting a generator loss of excitation is the use of impedance relays to sense the variation of impedance as viewed from the generator terminals [1]. However, compared with China's approachs, in the setting of impedance circle, the IEEE's allow the circle to extend along the negative X axis, meanwhile, in the latest edition of the "IEEE Guide for AC Generator Protection", the circle is further extended, reaching to -*** think this is adverse, to prove our point, the paper ,basing on the IEEE 9 bus model and using computer digital simulation, have studied various loss-of-excitation conditions and some system disturbances that may lead to the relay false tripping. simulation results indicate that the IEEE's method not only can't accelerate the operation effectively, but also will increase the chances of maloperation.

In order to protect more turn-to-turn faults for the turbo-generator with only three lead-out terminals in the neutral side, this paper applies a new principle protection - negative sequence impedance directional protection of fault components for stator internal asymmetrical fault. By means of Multi-loop Method, all possible internal short-circuit faults and single branch shutdown faults of a 300MW turbo-generator are calculated to obtain the protection performance. Calculation and performance analysis show that, this new principle protection is superior to other existing protections in the aspect of sensitivity and protection range, especially for interturn faults of turbogenerator stator winding. In addition, it won't incorrectly trip on external faults. Thus, this new principle protection can provide safeguard of high quality for internal faults in turbo-generator with only three lead-out terminals in the neutral side.

The paper analyses the existed protection of microgrid. And in order to meet the requirements of microgrid protection, a novel protection is presented in this paper. The protection based on local information without the need of communication, uses current traveling waves to identify faulted feeder, and the bus bar voltages to determine a event caused by fault or switch operation. In the protection scheme, current traveling waves are measured by current transducers in N line and phase lines, and wavelet multi-resolution analysis is used to decompose traveling wave signals. The initial traveling waves are compared in magnitude and polarity with each other to determine the faulted feeder. The protection is independent of microgrid operation connected with the main power grid or in island.
