Optical quality is the vital concern of injection-molded plastic optical lenses. Focal length is a key quality attribute of a lens to be controlled. A systematic model-free optimization (MFO) method is proposed to control the focal length. Both the gradient-free and gradient-based algorithms are developed. The effectiveness of the MFO method has been demonstrated through experiments. Comparisions with the model-based optimization (MBO) method are also conducted.

Tissue P systems are distributed parallel and non-deterministic computing models in the framework of membrane computing, which are inspired by intercellular communication and cooperation between neurons. Recently, cell separation is introduced into tissue P systems, which enables systems to generate an exponential workspace in a polynomial time. In this work, the computational power of tissue P systems with cell separation is investigated. A modified adaptive parameter particle swarm optimization (MAPSO) algorithm was proposed to enhance the convergence speed and optimization accuracy of the standard particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The algorithm is based on evolutionary factor calculation and evolutionary status estimate, and introduces parameter control and mutation operator to improve the convergence speed and the global optimization ability. Benchmark test comparison between two existing algorithms and the MAPSO algorithm was carried out. The experimental results show that the MAPSO algorithm can get better solution on 4 in 6 benchmark test functions and can converge faster on 5 in 6 benchmark test functions than the other two algorithms. The results reveal the advantage of the proposed algorithm in different optimization indexes, which is supposed to have a promising potential in solving the optimization problems of the practical process engineering.

In order to create a new mimic of glutathione peroxidase(GPx), bioimprinting was used to generate gluta-thione(GSH) binding site and chemical modification was used to incorporate catalytic group selenocystine(Sec). Human serum albumin(HSA) and S-substituted dinitrophenyl glutathione(GSH-S-DNP) were chosen as the imprinted matrix and imprinting template, respectively, to generate a GSH-imprinted protein(GSH-HSA) by bioimprinting. Sec was incorporated into the GSH-HSA by chemical modification to give a new GPx mimic(Se-GSH-HSA). Se-GSH-HSA displayed considerably higher GPx activity than non-printed HSA(Se-HSA). The enzymic properties and kinetics of Se-GSH-HSA were studied. Moreover, Se-GSH-HSA was confirmed to have stronger antioxidant ability to protect mitochondria against oxidative damage with ferrous sulfate/ascorbate-induced mitochondria damage model, indicating that Se-GSH-HSA has potential application in medicine.
