In this work, we propose a simplified least squares formulation (SLSF) for dynamic material balancing in chemical processes, which are often described by differential-algebraic equations. We compare the SLSF with traditional techniques, such as steady state data reconciliation (SSDR) and Kalman filter (KF). We also modify the SLSF when its assumptions can't be totally satisfied in some practical settings. Using chemical systems examples, we demonstrate that the SLSF can well deal with the practical dynamic material balancing problems.

The problem of on-line parameter identification was discussed for linear multivariable discrete time stochastic systems with communication access constraints. Based on the concept of parameter estimability defined with mutual information, a condition for identifiability was proved under the assumption that the time-varying parameter can be modeled as a Gauss-Markov process, and the sensors access status is described by binary-value function. Analytical analysis and simulation results show that, there is a proper communication strategy which preserving the identifiability of the system under access constraints.

In conventional techniques for modeling Pneumatic artificial muscle, there are difficulties such as poor knowledge of the process, inaccurate process or complexity of the resulting mathematical model. Trying to solve these problems, this study investigates the method of establishing the model using a novel network—Echo state Network (ESN). We introduce the mechanism of this net and apply it to our modeling work. The relevant parameters of the net were optimized using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Then we get the simulation results which reveal that it can get quite satisfactory results.

A capacitive electromagnetic flowmeter working in voltage sensing mode is developed. The methods to keep noise to a minimum are described. The signal converter is designed to measure the signal from the sensor and get the flow rate. The prototype flowmeter is calibrated with water in a flow loop. After the calibration, the system is tested with oil-water two-phase flow. An electrode type electromagnetic flowmeter is also tested with oil-water two-phase flow. Test results show the capacitive electromagnetic flowmeter has better performance than the electrode type flowmeter for oil-water two-phase volumetric flow rate measurement.
