Bioaccessibility and health risk assessment of hydrophobic organic pollutants in soils from four typical industrial contaminated sites in China

There have been reports of potential health risks for people from hydrophobic organic pollutants,such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs),polychlorinated hydrocarbons(PCHs),and organophosphate flame retardants(OPFRs).When a contaminated site is used for residential housing or public utility and recreation areas,the soil-bound organic pollutantsmight pose a threat to human *** this study,we investigated the contamination profiles and potential risks to human health of 15 PAHs,6 PCHs,and 12 OPFRs in soils from four contaminated sites in *** used an in vitro method to determine the oral bioaccessibility of soil *** PAHswere found at concentrations ranging from26.4 ng/g to 987 ng/***(0.27-14.3 ng/g)and OPFRs(6.30-310 ng/g)were detected,but at low levels compared to earlier *** levels of PAHs,PCHs,and OPFRs released from contaminated soils into simulated gastrointestinal fluids ranged from 1.74%to 91.0%,2.51%to 39.6%,and 1.37%to 96.9%,*** on both spiked and unspiked samples,we found that the oral bioaccessibility of pollutantswas correlated with their logKow andmolecularweight,and the total organic carbon content and pH of *** in 13 out of 38 contaminated soil samples posed potential high risks to *** considering oral bioaccessibility,nine soils still posed potential risks,while the risks in the remaining soils became *** contribution of this paper is that it corrects the health risk of soil-bound organic pollutants by detecting bioaccessibility in actual soils from different contaminated sites.

Autonomous exploration of unknown environments is a critical application scenario in robotics. However, existing studies have strived to generate an efficient tour plan that enables the robots to fully explore the environment. This is due to the greedy strategies and the lack of utilizing the information of the unexplored area. To address the above issues, we propose a new exploration strategy. Our approach involves partitioning the unexplored area into distinct regions and utilizing their estimated workload and spatial structure to construct a region graph. Subsequently, a VRP (Vehicle Routing Problem) planner allocates regions to robots and generates a global tour for each robot in a coordinated manner, which is then refined and provided to the robot’s navigation module. Experimental results demonstrate that that our method outperforms existing approaches in terms of exploration speed, total distance, and overlap ratio. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2023.

In the contemporary era of information technology, the exponential surge in data has rendered colossal potential value, which would be fully unlocked through data circulation and sharing. However, when the data contains sensitive information, special attention must be paid to the data privacy and security problem for data sharing. A feasible solution is to incorporate blockchain technology into the data sharing system, and the new challenge is how to provide fair rewards for data owners to motivate them to contribute data. To address this challenge, in this paper, we first design a blockchain-based data sharing system to enhance the trust and reliability of the data shared among participants. Then we propose an incentive allocation method based on the Shapley value, which comprehensively incorporates each participant’s contribution while ensuring fairness for the allocation. Finally, multiple numerical simulations are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed mechanism. © Beijing HIWING Scientific and Technological Information Institute 2024.

Robust production of N-acetyl-glucosamine in engineered Escherichia coli from glycerol-glucose mixture

Achieving a balanced cell growth and biosynthesis of target products is a pivotal challenge confronted in the realm of green biomanufacturing of chemicals, and it holds the promise of significantly enhancing the titer/yield/productivity of the target products. The co-utilization of carbon sources has emerged as a proven approach for the precise regulation of cell growth and biosynthesis processes, thereby serving as a potent strategy to expedite the production of chemicals. In our previous study, we successfully demonstrated the efficient production of N-acetyl-glucosamine in engineered Escherichia coli by leveraging an appropriate catabolic division of labor, utilizing a mixture of glycerol and glucose as the carbon source. In this study, we further refined the division of labor between these two carbon sources by meticulously regulating the expression of the zwf gene, which encodes glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and is crucial in diverting carbon source to the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP). After comparing three strategies for balancing cell growth and production, the engineered strain NAG-1 with zwf knocked out aided by the optimization of the glycerol-to-glucose ratio and the feeding mode of carbon sources resulted in robust production of N-acetyl-glucosamine. Remarkable production in a 5 L bioreactor was achieved, obtaining 249 g/L of N-acetyl-glucosamine with a yield of 0.684 g/g of total carbon sources (specifically, 0.791 g/g of glucose) and a productivity of 3.46 g/L/h. These results establish NAG-1 as the most efficient microbial cell factory reported thus far for the bioproduction of N-acetyl-glucosamine. The robust production of N-acetyl-glucosamine in E. coli using a mixture of glycerol and glucose suggests the immense potential of mixed carbon sources in the industrial green biomanufacturing of chemicals. © 2025 The Authors

This work presents an adaptive tracking guidance method for robotic fishes. The scheme enables robots to suppress external interference and eliminate motion jitter. An adaptive integral surge line-of-sight guidance rule is designed to eliminate dynamics interference and sideslip issues. Limited-time yaw and surge speed observers are reported to fit disturbance variables in the model. The approximation values can compensate for the system's control input and improve the robots' tracking ***, this work develops a terminal sliding mode controller and third-order differential processor to determine the rotational torque and reduce the robots' run jitter. Then, Lyapunov's theory proves the uniform ultimate boundedness of the proposed method. Simulation and physical experiments confirm that the technology improves the tracking error convergence speed and stability of robotic fishes.

In this paper, we consider optimal control problems with linear discrete state space model, which originate from a class of turbofan engines. The optimization problem associated with each moving horizon estimation (MHE) in classical model predictive control (MPC) is a quadratic programming (QP) problem, and the general QP algorithms does not exploit the structural features of the turbofan engine itself to improve the computational efficiency of the algorithm. In the framework of model predictive control, the turbofan engine model makes the rolling optimization subproblem exhibit a sparse structure. Based on this feature, the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is employed to solve each optimization sub-problem and design an improved MPC-ADMM algorithm for solving this class of optimal control problems. The simulation results are compared with the MPC-QP algorithm by numerical examples to show the effectiveness and superiority of the novel algorithm. © 2023 Journal of Applied and Numerical Optimization.

The thermally activated effect can produce a vital influence on the mechanical property and cutting force of metal materials in the machining *** insight can be gained into the action criteria of the thermally activated effect on the cutting force,which provides a solid basis of the research of material performance and *** this study,a cutting force model of selective laser melted(SLMed)Ti6Al4V alloy is proposed by introducing the modified constitutive model with thermally activated effects and the analytical model of the deformation zone into the cutting force *** anisotropic properties of SLMed Ti6Al4V alloy under different scanning strategies(0°,67.5°,and 90°)are explored by combining with the cutting force model,constitutive model and analytical model of deformation zone(primary deformation and tool-chip contact area).The action of thermally activated effects on the cutting force,primary deformation and tool-chip contact zone is also researched in *** experiments and predictions of SLMed Ti6Al4V alloy under different scanning strategies have been implemented to reveal the effectiveness of this new *** comparison results indicate that the proposed milling force model can effectively predict milling force and reflect well on the anisotropy of SLMed Ti6Al4V *** addition,this proposed force model can well analyze the action mechanism of the thermally activated effect on the milling force of SLMed Ti6Al4V alloy,which is significantly essential for the machining mechanism research in terms of a microscopic perspective.

Pre-combustion mercury removal with co-production of hydrogen via coal electrolysis

Pre-combustion mercury removal via coal electrolysis was performed and investigated on a bench-scale coal electrolytic cell(CEC)systemically,and factorial design was used to determine the effect of different operating conditions(coal particle size,operating temperature,operating cell voltage,and flow rate of slurry)on the percentage of mercury removal,percentage of ash removal,and dry heating value *** results showed that the operating cell voltage,as well as the interaction between operating cell voltage and coal particle size,are significant factors in the percentage of mercury *** is no significant factor in the percentage of ash removal and the dry heating value change,but the coal could be purified while keeping the dry heating value almost constant after electrolysis.A co-product of hydrogen could be produced during coal electrolysis with 50%lower energy consumption compared with water ***,a mechanism for mercury removal in coal was *** facts indicate that coal electrolysis is a promising method for precombustion mercury removal.

This brief investigates the data-driven stabilization for a class of unknown switched linear systems in both continuous and discrete time. We assume that the switching signal is known but the system matrices of each subsystem are unknown and belong to some sets described by finite noisy input-state data. Data-driven parameterization of each unknown subsystem is built on the instantaneous bound of the external disturbance rather than the energy bound. The closed-loop stability is guaranteed by adopting a controller-mode-dependent Lyapunov function and the resulting stability conditions are data-based rather than model-based. The switching signals are arbitrary as long as they satisfy the average dwell time (ADT) condition that derived from noisy data. Two numerical examples are presented to illustrate how to enhance the feasibility of the proposed methods. © 2024 Technical Committee on control Theory, Chinese Association of Automation.

Globally,over three billion people rely on traditional solid fuels for cooking and heating,leading to significant household air pollution and critical public health *** transitioning to clean energy carriers faces challenges of accessibility and affordabilitydespecially among low-income,rural populationsdalternative strategies like kitchen layout modifications and the use of ventilation fans may effectively reduce exposure to ***,we analyze factors influencing the adoption of separated kitchens and mechanical ventilation and evaluate changes in human exposure to PM2.5 under different kitchen renovation scenarios by conducting a nationwide survey of household kitchen characteristics in rural *** found that although 82%of rural households have kitchens separated from other rooms,only 34%use mechanical *** adoption of ventilation fans is significantly influenced by income and education *** estimate that widespread implementation of ventilation fans and separated kitchen designs could prevent approximately 67400 premature deaths annually,resulting in a health benefit of about USD 19 billion per yeardsubstantially exceeding the costs *** findings suggest that cost-effective kitchen renovations offer enormous potential for substantial health benefits and present a practical solution compared to the challenges of clean energy transitions in rural areas.
