Research data sharing becomes increasingly difficult in the context of social media. Increasing restrictions from social media sites are creating an environment where data cannot be freely shared and as a result scientific claims cannot be verified. In this work, we present a novel approach to data sharing that does not require explicitly publishing a dataset. We create a framework where researchers systematically share the parameters they used to crawl the dataset along with the code used to collect the data, allowing the reader to re-assemble the dataset at a later time. While this approach is by no means a silver bullet, we seek to start a conversation for researchers to implement approaches to data sharing that can be embraced by the research community. Modern power system is a typical multi-level complex giant system consisting of physical infrastructures, human operators, and social resources, etc. The conventional analytical methods and simulation systems can't provide sufficient guidance for its operation and management, because they are mainly based on physical models, natural phenomenon, or other existing control methods which are based on reductionism. ACP approach, mainly consisting of artificial systems (A), computational experiments (C) and parallel execution (P), which is based on holism and complex system theory, has its specific advantages in the research on power systems. In this article, ACP approach is applied to build up artificial power system (APS) by using multi-agent complex networks. With the help of APS, actual power system's control, scheduling, optimization and management can be improved further via providing theoretical guidance and technical support for the rolling optimizations in normal situations and emergency management in abnormal situations. As a case study, an APS constructed with actual data from North China power grid is constructed and its vulnerability is simulated and analyzed under random, dynamic and static attacks. © 2012 IEEE.

With the acceleration of China's urbanization, more and more unexpected disasters in big cities make a severe challenge to city emergency traffic management. Under this background, we present a heuristic implementation of urban emergency traffic evacuation in this paper. Firstly, we refer to a popular evacuation demand generation model to generate the evacuation demand. When solving the path selection problem, the heuristic search method is used. We take Dijkstra shortest path and current road condition as two parts of the evaluation function to evaluate different choices and choose the best one. To simulate the dynamic process of evacuation, we developed a position update algorithm to update the positions of traffic participants. The mathematical analysis method and computer simulation are combined to determine the final evacuation route of a traffic participant. This combination is effective since it takes advantages of both methods and avoids the shortcomings at the same time.

The Proportional - Integral - Derivative (PID) controllers are one of the most popular controllers used in industry because of their remarkable effectiveness, simplicity of implementation and broad applicability. PID tuning is the key issue in the design of PID controllers and most of the tuning processes are implemented manually resulting in difficulty and time consuming. To enhance the capabilities of traditional PID parameters tuning techniques, modern heuristics approaches, such as Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), are employed recent years. In this paper, a novel tuning method based on Fruit Fly Optimization Algorithm (FOA) is proposed to optimize PID controller parameters. Each fruit fly's position represents a candidate solution for PID parameters. When the fruit fly swarm flies towards one location, it is treated as the evolution of each iterative swarm. After hundreds of iteration, the tuning results - the best PID controller parameters can be obtained. The main advantages of the proposed method include ease of implementation, stable convergence characteristic, large searching range, ease of transformation of such concept into program code and ease of understanding. Simulation results demonstrate that the FOA-Based optimized PID (FOA - PID) controller is with the capability of providing satisfactory closed - loop performance. © 2012 IEEE.

Interactive image segmentation which needs the user to give certain hard constraints has shown promising performance for object segmentation. In this paper, we consider characters in text image as a special kind of object, and propose an adaptive graph cut based text binarization method to segment text from background. The main contributions of the paper lie in: 1) in order to make the binarization local adaptive with uneven background, the text region image is firstly roughly split into several sub-images on which graph cut is applied, and 2) considering the unique characteristics of the text, we propose to automatically classify some pixels as text or background with high confidence, severed as hard constraints seeds for graph cut to extract text from background by spreading the seeds into the whole sub-image. The experimental results show that our approach could get better performance in both character extraction accuracy and recognition accuracy.

In this paper, we proposed an architecture of a hierarchical networked urban traffic signal control system Based on Multi-agent. With mobile agent technology, traffic control strategies are designed as traffic control agents, which can move from device to device in a network. The system can reconfigure and replace these agents according to inconstant states of traffic environment and performances of agents. By this way, demand-based control is realized in traffic signal control system. Then we described the details and key technologies in the procession of agent-generation, agent-storage and agent-usage. At last, a prototype of the system is developed and basic functions of this system are tested by simulations. These simulations also confirm extensibility and effectiveness of the system.

Detecting text in video or natural scene image is quite challenging due to the complex background, various fonts and illumination conditions. The preprocessing period, which suppresses the nontext areas so as to highlight the text areas, is the basis for further text detection. In this paper, a novel graph-based background suppression method for scene text detection is proposed. Considering each pixel as a node in the graph, our approach incorporates pixel-level and context-level features into a graph. Various factors contribute to the unary and pair wise cost function which is optimized via max-flow/min-cut algorithm [16] to get a binary image whose nontext pixels are suppressed so that text pixels are highlighted. Furthermore, the proposed background suppression method could be easily combined with other detection methods to improve the performance. Experimental results on ICDAR 2011 competition dataset show promising performance.

Traffic signal coordination has long been a hot topic in intelligent Transportation systems (ITS) research. Simulation-based optimization is an important method to optimize the coordination designs as the traffic systems are not easily described by mathematical models accurately. For the traffic simulator in the method, micro-simulation is becoming more and more popular than the macroscopic or mesoscopic simulation in recent years, as the micro-simulation can describe drivers' decision-making process and their driving behaviors in the framework of ITS. However, the computing burden for the micro-simulation is usually very heavy as a large number of vehicles are modeled and simulated separately. For the optimizer in the method, iterative algorithms such as Genetic Algorithms (GA), Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) are widely used to find the global optimal solutions. However, these algorithms usually take too much time to converge when a large-scale road network is encountered. To alleviate the computing burden and speed up the convergence, we build an agent-based traffic simulator and employ Ordinal Optimization (OO) as the optimizer. We accelerate both the simulator and the optimizer with Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), which has been applied successfully in many areas for parallel computing. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the OO method and the power of GPU for parallel computing. © 2012 IEEE.

Traffic micro-simulation is an important tool in the intelligent Transportation systems (ITS) research. In the micro-simulation, a bottom up system can be built up by the interactions of vehicle agents, road agents, traffic lights agents, etc. The Artificial societies, Computational experiments, and Parallel execution (ACP) approach suggests integrating other metropolitan systems such as logistic, infrastructure, legal and regulatory, weather and environmental systems to build an Artificial Transportation System (ATS) to help solve ITS problems. This is reasonable as the transportation system is complex that is affected by many systems interacting with each other. However, there is a challenge that the computing burden can be very heavy as there can be many agents of different kinds interacting in parallel in ATS. In recent years, the Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) have been applied successfully in many areas for parallel computing. Compared with the traditional CPU cluster, GPU has an obvious advantage of low cost of hardware and electricity consumption. In this paper, we build a parallel traffic simulation module of ATS with GPU. The simulation results are reasonable and a maximum speedup factor of 105 is obtained compared with the CPU implementations. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper considers the distributed quadratic stabilization problems of uncertain continuous-time linear multiagent systems with undirected communication topologies. It is assumed that the agents have identical nominal dynamics while subject to different norm-bounded parameter uncertainties, leading to weakly heterogeneous multi-agent systems. A distributed controller is proposed, based on the relative states of neighboring agents and a subset of absolute states of the agents. It is shown that the distributed quadratic stabilization problem under such a controller is equivalent to the H∞ control problems of a set of decoupled linear systems having the same dimensions as a single agent. A two-step algorithm is presented to construct the distributed robust controller, which does not involve any conservatism and meanwhile decouples the feedback gain design from the communication topology. Furthermore, the distributed quadratic H∞ control problem of uncertain linear multi-agent systems with external disturbances is discussed, which can be reduced to the scaled H∞ control problems of a set of independent systems whose dimensions are equal to that of a single agent.
