Soft coarse-grained particle model for particle-fluid systems

By modeling a group of neighboring real particles as a single coarse-grained particle(CGP),discrete particle method(DPM)is now capable of simulating industrial-scale particle-fluid ***,a systematic approach to determine the CGP properties and develop their interaction models is still lacking,which casts uncertainty on the predictivity of the *** this study,collisions between predefined particle groups are analyzed to construct kernel functions for modeling the CGPs and then the model parameters are determined by equating the statistical properties of the CGPs and the real particles in the physical process *** approach is implemented for homogeneous cooling of granular gas,then demonstrated effective in simulating experimental fluidized beds.

Numerical simulation of particle erosion coupled with flue gas desulphurization in the spouted bed

The addition of an axial swirl vane (ASV) and multi-jet distributor plate (MDP) to a conventional spouted bed (CSB) to form an integrated multi-jet swirling spouted bed (IMSSB) combined with internally reinforced components not only optimized its desulphurization efficiency but also exacerbated the erosion of particles on the bed and the internal components. Coupled study of the particle erosion and desulphurization reaction in the flue gas desulphurization process of an IMSSB was carried out based on the CPFD numerical simulation. The results show that: the desulfurization efficiency of IMSSB is increased by 16.6% compared with that of the CSB;in terms of wall erosion, the maximum erosion rate in IMSSB is about four times that of CSB;the erosion condition increases in the vane from the center to the edges;particle erosion is most severe in the fountain area.

Insight into reaction performance and product formation in a novel coal pyrolyzer of pilot-scale test

The pyrolysis behavior of coal in a pilot-scale moving bed with internals is modeled through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The temperature field, reaction field, volatile flow paths inside the reactor, and effects of the internal design and operating parameters on the tar yield are systematically investigated. The simulation results show that the central gas channel allows the majority of generated volatiles to laterally pass through the low-temperature bed layer. This not only enhanced the primary volatile generation reaction but also significantly reduced the secondary cracking of tar. However, the placement of the heat transfer plates had a dual effect. While the plates significantly enhanced heat transfer, thereby promoting primary reactions, they could cause the volatiles to bend towards the high-temperature zone near the plates, resulting in the partial loss of tar. The tar yield may decrease with an increase in the number or area of heat transfer plates. Furthermore, investigations into the operational parameters revealed that increasing the furnace temperature appropriately and reducing the mass flux of coal were favorable for the heat transfer and yield increase in tar.

Engineering tin dioxide quantum dots-coated iron oxide nanorods as sulfur host for polysulfides-immobile lithium-sulfur battery

Quantum dots (QDs) commonly have high activity and strong adsorption capability, making them to be quite promising for energy-storage systems. Here, we develop a SnO2 2 QDs-coated rice-shaped Fe2O3 2 O 3 nanorod as a highperformance sulfur host for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Small size of SnO2 2 QDs and polar Fe2O3 2 O 3 reduce the loss of polysulfides and thereby suppress shuttle effect efficiently, which is verified by density functional theory (DFT) investigations on adsorption energies. The Fe2O3/SnO2 2 O 3 /SnO 2 QDs@S cathode displays a high Coulombic efficiency of 97.4 % after 100 cycles along with a stable capacity of 475 mAh g-1. -1 . Investigations on rate-performance indicate that the capacity of Fe2O3/SnO2 2 O 3 /SnO 2 QDs@S cathode is able to recover to the initial values even after three rounds of repeated measurements, showing a good reversibility. It is expected that the stable capacity and Coulombic efficiency during charge-discharge at different conditions, and the strategy of coating QDs on nanorods would find general applications for developing QDs-enhanced energy-storage systems.

Interface Engineering of a Ti4O7 Nanofibrous Membrane for Efficient Solar-Driven Evaporation

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation provides a feasible and sustainable way to solve the fresh water shortage using abundant solar energy and has recently attracted considerable attention. However, it has been limited by the evaporation rate and solar-heat conversion efficiency of the current materials. Herein, a novel Ti4O7 membrane with synergetic photothermal and electrothermal effects was developed using a straightforward in situ approach. Based on interface engineering, the interface between the surface of the membrane and water was hydrophobically modified, and a thermal insulation layer was added to the bottom of the membrane. The optimized self-floating membrane with excellent sunlight absorbability and conductivity achieved a remarkably high evaporation rate of 7.51 kg m-2 h-1 with a voltage of 3 V as compensation under one-sun irradiation (1 kW m-2). Moreover, the bilayered membrane displayed efficient salt ion rejection, and the collected water can meet the World Health Organization (WHO) standard required for potable water.

Effects of TGO growth on the interface stress distribution based on 3D pores in TBC ceramics layer

Yttria partially stabilized zirconia sprayed by the air-plasma-spraying method is widely used to protect super-alloy substrates due to its unique thermomechanical properties, still, the formation and development of thermally grown oxide (TGO) often causes crack propagation in thermal barrier coatings and leads to accidents. In this paper, effects of the thickness of the TGO layer, porosity on the heat insulation properties, surface residual stress between the ceramic layer and the TGO layer of TBCs fabricated by atmospheric plasma spraying were studied. Finite element calculations were used to study the thickness of TGO layers with different porosities after thermal shock, the thermal insulation performance of coatings at high temperatures and the three-dimensional distribution of thermal strain, especially at the interface between the lower ceramic layer and upper TGO layer. The results show that when the porosity of the ceramic coating is approximately 24.35%, the thermal insulation performance and the maximum von Mises stress of the coating layers are optimized, and the coating has the most extended service life. Theoretically, this paper is of great significance in revealing the influence of porosity on the service life of thermal barrier coatings.

Engineering of MnTe/MnO Heterostructures with Interfacial Electric Field Modulation for Efficient and Durable Li-O2 Batteries

Design and synthesis of highly active and robust bifunctional cathode catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are of vital significance for practical applications of lithium-oxygen (Li-O-2) batteries. Herein, a built-in electric field (BIEF) strategy is reported to fabricate MnTe/MnO heterostructures with a large work function difference (Delta Phi) as a bifunctional cathode catalyst in Li-O-2 batteries. The MnTe/MnO heterostructures with nanosheets and microporous structures result in an abundance of exposed active sites and facilitate mass transfer. More importantly, the heterogeneous MnTe/MnO nano-interface region provides a BIEF that can trigger interfacial charge redistribution, fine-tune the adsorption energy of oxygen intermediates, and alter the morphology of discharge products to accelerate ORR/OER kinetics. Impressively, the fabricated Li-O-2 batteries with MnTe/MnO cathode showcases exhibit excellent electrochemical performances, including low charging overpotential, a high specific capacity of 11930 mA h g(-1), and good cycle stability over 350 cycles even with a fixed specific capacity of 500 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 500 mA g(-1). This work provides an avenue for the rational design of high performance heterostructure electrocatalysts toward practical applications for rechargeable Li-O-2 batteries.

MXene-based solvent-responsive actuators with a polymer-intercalated gradient structure

Actuators based on electrically conductive and hydrophilic two-dimensional (2D) Ti3C2TX MXene are of interest for fast and specific responses in demanding environments, such as chemical production. Herein, Ti3C2TX-based solvent-responsive bilayer actuators were developed, featuring a gradient polymer-intercalation structure in the active layer. These actuators were assembled using negatively charged pristine Ti3C2TX nanosheets as the passive layer and positively charged polymer-tethered Ti3C2TX as the active layer. 2D wide-angle X-ray scattering and simulations related the gradient polymer intercalated microstructure in the polymer/MXene composite active layer to the counterintuitive actuation behavior. The bending of the bilayer films in solvent vapor is triggered by the gradient polymer-intercalation and the differing diffusion rate of solvent molecules through the MX and MX-polymer layers of the bilayer actuator. With their ease of fabrication, remote light-control capabilities, and excellent actuation performance, the Ti3C2TX-based bilayer actuators reported here may find applications in areas such as sensors for monitoring chemical production, infrared camouflage, smart switches, and excavators in toxic solvent environments.

Roles of Oxygen Vacancies in CeO2 Nanostructures for Catalytic Aerobic Cyclohexane Oxidation

Nanostructured cerium-based catalytic materials haveattractedmuch attention in the field of redox catalysis, due to the excellentactive sites exposed on the nanocrystal surface, and herein, the oxygenvacancy (O-V) and the crystal facet effect of typical modelnanostructured ceria (Nano-CeO2) were focused and investigatedfor the catalytic aerobic cyclohexane oxidation. Specifically forthe CeO2 nanocubes with a {100} facet, the CeO2 nanopolyhedrons with a dominant {111} facet, and the CeO2 nanorods with a dominant {110} facet, the catalytic roles of theO(V) and acid sites toward cyclohexane oxidation were systematicallyinvestigated. Surface oxygen vacancy (Sur-O-V) and intrinsicoxygen vacancy (Int-O-V), and particularly the active Sur-O-V and active Int-O-V performing catalytic activityunder a working state specific for cyclohexane oxidation, were accuratelyrecognized and distinguished. Furthermore, the activation abilityof the O-V sites for activating molecular oxygen into activeoxygen species (O-Active) was also revealed, and the acidsite properties, which include the acidity and the types of acid sites,were probed and quantified. The Nano-CeO2 with an exposed{100} facet possesses the most active Sur-O-V, determiningthe catalytic activity, and has the strongest activation ability,contributing to a high reaction activity under extremely inert *** Nano-CeO2 with a {110} dominant facet with the mostactive Int-O-V and abundant acid sites could acceleratefurther oxidation to adipic acid;the effect of the two key siteswas described particularly by the & alpha;factor (= Total Acidityx Amount of Active Int-O-V). Finally, the property-performancerelationship toward cyclohexane oxidation was speculated based onthe Nano-CeO2 catalytic system.
