For overlay network, the mismatch between logical network and underlying physical network could cause a high number of substrate hops resulting in increased delay and network traffic, as well as degrade performance of application significantly. Thus selecting the nearest neighbor for each node in terms of network latency, will bridge this gap efficiently. In this paper, we present a novel approach to search nearest neighbor in overlay network, which combines distance prediction using network coordinate and round-trip time measurements to generate proximity information, achieving both efficiency and accuracy. Our proposal can be used to improve the performance of many large scale distributed applications like network-aware overlay construction and selection of nearby resource in the network.

This paper attempts to identify the reliability assessment in terms of data aggregation in wireless sensor networks. With the sensor nodes' Bayesian lifetime model, the fault ratio of sensing data among a pair of nodes in the worst case is derived. Leveraging the property of exponential aggregation latency distribution, the optimizing strategy, namely fault-tolerant scheduling for aggregation (FTSA) is proposed. Quantitative analysis of the task scheduling is also presented, which is used for reducing the latency of data aggregation. Moreover, the sensor fault probability and aggregation latency are initially introduced into the data collection scheduling process, and it mathematically shows that the fused local estimate can obtain a global estimation with the reliable data acquisition framework. Performance evaluations of the proposed approach with both sensor node faults and scheduling policy are carried out. These results show that the proposed approach outperforms the earlier algorithms in terms of latency designed without regard to sensor faults.

Collaborative virtual environment (CVE) is a multi-user virtual environment that supports distributed collaboration. The two main issues that CVE is facing are how to improve system scalability and quality of service. Combining Active routing and content-based publish/subscribe and taking bi-directional shared multicast tree as the communication structure of Interest Management, Active interest management (AIM) can effectively improve system scalability. However, due to the lack of network monitoring, it can only provide same services, and consequently cannot guarantee services and alleviate system workload when it gets saturated. In this paper, we propose a QoS-based Adaptive Access control (QAAC) approach which includes dynamic system delay maintenance, active router verification and host low start. By QAAC, we dynamically control the access of hosts based on network status to improve services and scalability in AIM. Finally, experiment results show that this approach can stabilize network traffic, reduce system load and provide better collaboration services.

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) shares many similarities with evolutionary algorithms (EAs), while the standard PSO does not use any evolution operators such as crossover and mutation. This paper presents a hybrid PSO algorithm to inherit some excellent characteristics of advanced evolutionary computation techniques. The proposed method employs a novel multi-parent crossover operator and a self-adaptive Cauchy mutation operator to help escape from local optima. Experimental results on a suit of well-known benchmark functions with many local minima have shown that the proposed method could successfully deal with those difficult multimodal optimization problems.

In the paper, for many-objective optimization problems, the authors pointed out that the Pareto Optimality is unfair, unreasonable and imperfect for Many-objective Optimization Problems (MOPs) underlying the hypothesis that all objectives have equal importance and propose a new evolutionary decision theory. The key contribution is the discovery of the new definition of optimality called E-optimality for MOP that is based on a new conception, so called E-dominance, which not only considers the difference of the number of superior and inferior objectives between two feasible solutions, but also considers the values of improved objective functions underlying the hypothesis that all objectives in the problem have equal importance. Two new evolutionary algorithms for E-optimal solutions are proposed. Because the new relation < E of E-dominance is not transitive, so a new way must be found for consideration of convergence properties of algorithms. A Boolean function better used as a select strategy is defined. The convergence theorems of the new evolutionary algorithms are proved. Some numerical experiments show that the new evolutionary decision theory is better than Pareto decision theory for many-objective function optimization problems.

This paper investigates the load balancing in sensor nodes and wireless link based on the performance of wireless sensor networks. With an optimized model, the dynamic scheme of data collection and forwarding scheduling between grid-quorum is derived. Leveraging the property of dissimilarity distribution, a method to quantitatively evaluate the benefits of load balancing is presented, in order to access the profitability. Then a novel dynamic load balancing of overlay-based WSN (DLBO) algorithm has been put forward. In particular, the tradeoff between transferring ratio and the load imbalance among nodes is discussed. The load balancing method in this paper outperforms others in terms of balancing factor, different nodes number and data scales of applications. The proposed model and analytical results can be effectively applied for reliability analysis for other wireless applications (e.g., persistent data delivery is involved).

Wireless video security becomes an important challenge for commercial applications. Two efficient encryption algorithms for video system, Signed Integer Exponential-Golomb Coded (SE) Encryption Algorithm and Context-Adaptive Variable Length Coding (CAVLC) Encryption Algorithm are proposed during the process of the entropy coding. In order to maintain the format compliance, the signs of motion vector difference (MVD), delta quantity parameter (QP) in SE are confused, as well as the levels of nonzero transform coefficients in CAVLC are encrypted by stream cipher. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms that encrypt much less important data can achieve high security and low complexity, while still maintain compliance to the compression format. The proposed algorithms are especially suitable for wireless multimedia application. © 2008 IEEE.

The definition of danger is one of the most important problems need to be solved in the application of danger theory in artificial immune system. Cloud model is an effective tool in transforming between qualitative concepts and their quantitative expressions. This paper uses the concept of cloud model to abstract the character of parameters of computer system, and consequently present the definition of danger signal. Integrate various danger signals the definition of danger is got. At last, a cooperating stimulate model including both self-nonself recognition method and danger recognition method is presented.

Vehicular networks have become increasingly popular in the research community. Messages in vehicular networks are usually subject to both time and space constraints, and therefore should be disseminated during a specified duration and within a specific coverage. Since vehicles are constantly moving in and out of a region, dissemination of a message should be repeated to achieve reliability. However, the reliable dissemination for some messages might be at the cost of unreliable or even no chance of dissemination for other messages, which raises tradeoffs between reliability and fairness. In this paper, we study the scheduling of data dissemination in vehicular networks with mesh infrastructure. Performance metrics for reliability and fairness are proposed first. Our metric for reliability covers factors in both time and space dimensions and the metric for fairness incorporates fairness in both the network-wise sense and the mesh roadside unit-wise (MRU-wise) sense. Several scheduling algorithms are developed: one reliability-oriented algorithm, one fairness- oriented algorithm and three hybrid schemes. Extensive evaluation work is performed to quantitively analyze different scheduling algorithms. Our evaluation results show that (1) hybrid schemes outperform reliability-oriented and fairness-oriented algorithms in the sense of overall efficiency and (2) different algorithms have quite different characteristics on reliability and fairness.

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) has shown its fast search speed in many complicated optimization and search problems. However, PSO could often easily fall into local optima. This paper presents an improved PSO with adaptive jump. The proposed method combines a novel jump strategy and an adaptive Cauchy mutation operator to help escape from local optima. The new algorithm was tested on a suite of well-known benchmark functions with many local optima. Experimental results were compared with some similar PSO algorithms based on Gaussian distribution and Cauchy distribution, and showed better performance on those test functions.
