Despite the significant improvements achieved by large language models (LLMs) in English reasoning tasks, these models continue to struggle with multilingual reasoning. Recent studies leverage a full-parameter and two-stage training paradigm to teach models to first understand non-English questions and then reason. However, this method suffers from both substantial computational resource computing and catastrophic forgetting. The fundamental cause is that, with the primary goal of enhancing multilingual comprehension, an excessive number of irrelevant layers and parameters are tuned during the first stage. Given our findings that the representation learning of languages is merely conducted in lower-level layers, we propose an efficient multilingual reasoning alignment approach that precisely identifies and fine-tunes the layers responsible for handling multilingualism. Experimental results show that our method, SLAM, only tunes 6 layers' feed-forward sub-layers including 6.5−8% of all parameters within 7B and 13B LLMs, achieving superior average performance than all strong baselines across 10 languages. Meanwhile, SLAM only involves one training stage, reducing training time by 4.1 − 11.9× compared to the two-stage method. © 2025 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Climate downscaling is crucial for detailed small-scale analysis and for acquiring climate data in regions without weather stations. Operator learning has proven potential for this task. However, several challenges remain in operator learning, such as multimodal fusion, spatiotemporal fusion and input state and query adaptation. To address these challenges, we propose a Spatiotemporal Multimodal Fusion Operator with a state-Query Coupled Kernel (SMCK). This framework includes a latent space fusion encoder that encodes climate variables using position-wise multihead attention for multimodal fusion and integrates historical information to generate robust and precise representation. Additionally, we introduce a state-query coupled kernel that combines radial basis functions and discrete fourier encoding to enhance query location representation, while also adapting to the state to obtain the coupled kernel. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves state-ofthe-art performance and provides strong support for climate downscaling and the planning of climate-related strategies. © 2025 IEEE.

Fratricide! Hijacking in Android Multi-Window

Android’s multi-window solutions allow several apps to coexist on one screen, providing powerful functionalities and appealing visuals for modern mobile devices. However, this opens the door for potential malware hijacking attacks. In our study, we unveiled Android’s insufficient security measures against malware activity in multi-window modes, and identified strategies on how to bypass these measures. We first introduced long-term monitoring methods through background services or malicious sub-window activities, and then designed and implemented 7 multi-window hijacking strategies to achieve multi-window hijacking in the three mainstream multi-window modes. To evaluate the effectiveness and impact of the attacks, we ran the hijacking in different system versions supporting multi-window solutions, and simulated the hijacking on 262 popular apps. All of the apps suffer from at least two types of multi-window hijacking attacks, and more than 65% of them can be attacked by all the 7 multi-window hijacking attacks. Furthermore, we designed and distributed a questionnaire to gather user opinions towards these attacks. 85% of respondents believe that the multi-window hijacking is highly covert and difficult to defend against. Of significance, we received acknowledgement and award fund from development teams of impactful apps. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

This study investigates the environmental and structural impacts of crop and rangeland residue burning in Punjab during April and May 2023, utilizing ground-based interferometric radar alongside atmospheric and land use datasets. The radar system was employed to monitor structural deformations in buildings affected by fire, providing critical insights into the broader impacts of the fires on infrastructure. Multiple ground-based interferometric radars for distributed monitoring can effectively obtain the three-dimensional deformation components of structural targets in real fire scenes. The monitoring results conform to the displacement variation law of existing portal steel frame structures during fire deformation, and can provide effective data support for building structure collapse warning under fire. This approach offers a novel method for assessing the structural integrity of buildings during and after fire events, complementing traditional environmental monitoring. Environmental data show a marked increase in atmospheric pollutants such as NO₂, CH₄, and CO in May 2023, directly linked to the residue burning. Active fire data from FIRMS and MODIS revealed a 98% increase in fire events compared to April, while land surface temperature analysis showed a rise of 1.54%, with affected areas reaching up to 45.9°C. LULC analysis indicated a 23.3% decrease in cropland and rangeland areas, reflecting extensive land clearing. These findings highlight the urgent need for sustainable agricultural management and policies to mitigate the environmental and infrastructural damage caused by residue burning in Punjab. © 2025 The Society for Range Management

Probabilistic-Search and Neighbor-Density Based Doppler-Shift Acquisition in Space Communications

In space communications, the signal's long-distance transmission between a flying transmitter-receiver pair encounters two obstacles: a huge path-loss and a high-speed movement. The huge path-loss results in a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the high-speed movement brings a dynamic Doppler-shift, thus posing a great challenge for Doppler-shift acquisition. Under the low SNR, the Doppler-shift acquisition has to accumulate many symbols in a long-time period. However, during this period, the dynamic Doppler-shift disperses all these symbols' total energy over a wide range, thus causing the energy dispersion problem. To address this problem, we propose a probabilistic-search and neighbor-density (PSND) scheme, where the probabilistic-search considers the element's amplitude and sacrifices some redundant signal elements for a narrower search-range, while the neighbordensity sums the signal element's all neighbors for a larger signal energy. The PSND scheme includes two algorithms: the Generic PSND and Iterative PSND. The Generic PSND algorithm first selects some search-elements with their probabilities to construct a probabilistic-search-range, then selects some density-elements with their neighbor-elements to derive the neighbor-densities, and finally searches the largest neighbor-density to obtain the acquisition result. Built upon the Generic PSND algorithm above, the Iterative PSND algorithm iteratively updates the searchelements to further strengthen the neighbor-density in a narrower probabilistic-search-range. Moreover, the simulations results have demonstrated our PSND scheme's higher acquisition probability, as compared with the existing schemes. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Essential proteins play an essential role in cell survival and replication. Currently, more and more computational methods are developed to identify essential proteins, which overcome the time-consuming, costly and inefficient shortcomings with biological experimental methods. In order to improve the recognition rate, some new methods by fusing multiple features are developed, but they seldom consider the connection among features. After analyzing a large number of methods based on multi-feature fusion, a phenomenon among features is found, called weak consensus, then a weak consensus model to fuse these features is proposed in this paper. After analyzing the relationship between a protein and its neighbors in protein-protein interaction networks, a new centrality, namely neighborhood aggregation centrality(NAC) is developed in this paper. Then, a Max-Min strategy is used to integrate NAC with Pearson correlation coefficient and Jaccard similarity coefficient based on gene expression data to obtain local importance score. In addition, orthologous feature score is used to measure proteins conservation. Finally, by using the weak consensus model to fuse orthologous feature score with local importance score, a new method WOL is proposed in this paper. Then experiments are performed on *** data. The results show that compared with WDC, PeC, ION, JDC, NCCO and E_POC, WOL has a higher recognition rate.

Diffusion-Weighted Imaging (DWI) is a significant technique for studying white matter. However, it suffers from low-resolution obstacles in clinical settings. Post-acquisition Super-Resolution (SR) can enhance the resolution of DWIs and has gained increasing research interest in recent years. An advanced generative model, the Diffusion Model (DM), exhibits particularly promising performance in image SR. However, effective conditions are required to bootstrap the DM for DWI SR. To this end, we proposed the first DM-based DWI SR model with two effective conditions based on low-solution DWIs and Track Density Imaging (TDI) maps, which possess rich high-resolution prior knowledge Additionally, we consider another condition based on features from low-resolution DWIs. These two conditions are integrated into our model, which comprises three components: DWI Resolution Enhancer (DRE), DWI Feature Extractor (DFE), and TDI Feature Extractor (TFE). DRE combines low-resolution DWI features from DFE with TDI features from TFE to progressively generate high-resolution DWIs. We performed extensive experiments on DWIs of normal subjects from human connectome projects and patients with Parkinson’s disease. The results demonstrate that our model outperforms existing DWI SR models, both qualitatively and quantitatively. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Optimizing Monitoring Utility of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Considering Adverse Effects

For Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) monitoring tasks, capturing high quality images of target objects is important for subsequent recognition. Concerning the problem, many prior works study placement/trajectory planning for UAVs to maximize the quality of captured images. However, all of them overlook a fact that UAV monitoring may cause a huge risk/annoyance on living objects. In this paper, we investigate the novel problem of oPtimizing unmanned aErial vehicles plAcement by Considering both monitoring utility and adverse Effects (PEACE). We propose an approach to solve PEACE, which is proved to be NP-hard. Overall, our approach achieves a 1-1/e- approximation ratio. First, we approximate the original problem of PEACE as a classical problem of Monotone Submodular function Maximization under a Uniform Matroid constraint (MSMUM) with a controlled gap. Then, for MSMUM, we propose a combination of algorithms achieving a 1-1/e approximation and O(n\log n) time complexity considering the correlation among the UAV monitoring strategies. The proposed algorithms outperform existing algorithms for MSMUM through theoretical analysis and experimental results. Extensive simulations and field experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, achieving performance gains of 9.0% to 1434.5% compared to existing methods. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Stitching, Fine-tuning, Re-training: A SAM-enabled Framework for Semi-supervised 3D Medical Image Segmentation

Segment Anything Model (SAM) fine-tuning has shown remarkable performance in medical image segmentation in a fully supervised manner, but requires precise annotations. To reduce the annotation cost and maintain satisfactory performance, in this work, we leverage the capabilities of SAM for establishing semi-supervised medical image segmentation models. Rethinking the requirements of effectiveness, efficiency, and compatibility, we propose a three-stage framework, i.e., Stitching, Fine-tuning, and Re-training (SFR). The current fine-tuning approaches mostly involve 2D slice-wise fine-tuning that disregards the contextual information between adjacent slices. Our stitching strategy mitigates the mismatch between natural and 3D medical images. The stitched images are then used for fine-tuning SAM, providing robust initialization of pseudo-labels. Afterwards, we train a 3D semi-supervised segmentation model while maintaining the same parameter size as the conventional segmenter such as V-Net. Our SFR framework is plug-and-play, and easily compatible with various popular semi-supervised methods. We also develop an extended framework SFR+ with selective fine-tuning and re-training through confidence estimation. Extensive experiments validate that our SFR and SFR+ achieve significant improvements in both moderate annotation and scarce annotation across five datasets. In particular, SFR framework improves the Dice score of Mean Teacher from 29.68% to 74.40% with only one labeled data of LA dataset.
