Mirror complementary transformer network for RGB-thermal salient object detection

Conventional RGB-T salient object detection treats RGB and thermal modalities equally to locate the common salient regions. However, the authors observed that the rich colour and texture information of the RGB modality makes the objects more prominent compared to the background;and the thermal modality records the temperature difference of the scene, so the objects usually contain clear and continuous edge information. In this work, a novel mirror-complementary Transformer network (MCNet) is proposed for RGB-T SOD, which supervise the two modalities separately with a complementary set of saliency labels under a symmetrical structure. Moreover, the attention-based feature interaction and serial multiscale dilated convolution (SDC)-based feature fusion modules are introduced to make the two modalities complement and adjust each other flexibly. When one modality fails, the proposed model can still accurately segment the salient regions. To demonstrate the robustness of the proposed model under challenging scenes in real world, the authors build a novel RGB-T SOD dataset VT723 based on a large public semantic segmentation RGB-T dataset used in the autonomous driving domain. Extensive experiments on benchmark and VT723 datasets show that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art approaches, including CNN-based and Transformer-based methods. Multimodal Multitask Control Plane Verification Framework

Modern networks are susceptible to configuration errors, such as misconfigurations and policy conflicts due to the complex interactions of diverse devices through various protocols. Control plane verification offers an effective solution to prevent these errors. However, existing tools face several challenges: (i) prolonged verification times, (ii) the verification of only specific policies, and (iii) poor robustness against node and link failures. To address these issues, we propose a control plane verification framework based on a multimodal multitask learning model. This framework enables simultaneous verification of multiple policies directly from various network configuration files. The learning model utilizes modality fusion techniques to capture both topology-related and traffic-related network features. It is trained on datasets augmented with the failure model to enhance robustness against failures. We compare our framework with three state-of-the-art verification tools: Minesweeper, Hoyan, and Tiramisu. Our evaluation shows that our framework is 2600 times faster than Minesweeper, twice as fast as Hoyan, and 19 times faster than Tiramisu, while maintaining 100% verification accuracy. Furthermore, our framework excels in verifying traffic-related network policies and remains effective even under node and link failures.

Rethinking Cost-Efficient VM Scheduling on Public Edge Platforms: A Service Providers Perspective

Prior studies on traditional centralized clouds independently optimizing static resource utilization and dynamic bandwidth cost are not applicable to edge scenarios, where edge sites are interconnected by wide area networks (WAN) rather than local area networks (LAN) as within clouds. Due to the lack of knowledge about the actual status of public edge platforms and real-world edge datasets, existing influential literature on edge scenarios demonstrates significant disparities in optimization objectives and perspectives. To bridge this gap, we collaborate with a public edge platform and perform a comprehensive measurement, which reveals limitations of the status quo VM scheduling schemes and potential opportunities for improvement. However, resolving VM scheduling considering static resource utilization, dynamic bandwidth cost, and end users' QoE in a cost-efficient manner faces several challenges, including coupled objectives, exponentially increased complexity, and spatiotemporal dynamics. To address the above challenges, in this work, we propose a holistic online framework that integrates combinatorial bandit-based VM migration and seasonality-aware VM request allocation at two distinct time granularities. Large-scale experiments based on a real-world dataset confirm that our online framework achieves near-offline bandwidth cost and resource utilization while significantly lowering time consumption.

The real-time control capability of IoT devices is contingent upon the transmission of packets. However, due to the influence of multiple devices accessing the network, the bandwidth available to IoT devices from access points may decline significantly, which causes a surge in the queuing latency and interrupts the transmission. This phenomenon is referred to as transient congestion. To achieve stable high-quality network service, this paper designs RushWay, a QUIC-enabled framework for alleviating transient congestion. RushWay employs stream multiplexing to compress the original packet into the stream frame, thereby reducing the bandwidth required for transmission. Furthermore, RushWay employs an adaptive decision-making algorithm to assess uplink queue conditions and packet latency requirements, thereby alleviating transient congestion. The simulation results demonstrate that RushWay can improve key performance by 13% to 94%. © 2024 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s). Publication rights licensed to ACM.

LMGD: Log-Metric Combined Microservice Anomaly Detection Through Graph-Based Deep Learning

Microservice architecture is a high-cohesion and low-coupling software architecture. Its core idea is to split the application into a set of microservices with a single function and independent deployment. Due to their complexity and large scale, microservice systems are typically fragile and failures are inevitable. Therefore, there is an urgent need for fast and accurate anomaly detection capabilities. However, the existing microservice anomaly detection methods do not pay attention to the multi-source data of the microservice system and thus have low accuracy. To address this limitation, we propose a Log-Metric Combined Microservice Anomaly Detection approach through Graph-based Deep Learning (termed as LMGD). First, we propose a time-aware LSTM prediction neural network to improve the accuracy of service dependency mining. Secondly, based on the service dependency graph, we propose an anomaly detection method based on log-metric fusion, which can more accurately describe the running status of microservices, thereby improving the accuracy of anomaly detection. The experimental outcomes demonstrate that compared with other state-of-the-art methods, our method improves recall and F1-score by 2.63% and 1.05%.

DeepZoning: Re-accelerate CNN Inference with Zoning Graph for Heterogeneous Edge Cluster

Parallelizing CNN inference on heterogeneous edge clusters with data parallelism has gained popularity as a way to meet real-time requirements without sacrificing model accuracy. However, existing algorithms struggle to find optimal parallel granularity for complex CNNS, the structure of which is a directed acyclic graph (DAG) rather than a chain, and the parallel dimension is inflexible. To distribute the workload of modern CNNs on heterogeneous devices is also proven as NP-hard problem. In this article, we introduce DeepZoning, a versatile and cooperative inference framework that combines both model and data parallelism to accelerate CNN inference. DeepZoning employs two algorithms at different levels: (1) a low-level Adaptive Workload Partition algorithm that uses linear programming and takes spatial and channel dimensions into optimization during the search for feature map distribution on heterogeneous devices, and (2) a high-level Model Partition algorithm that finds the optimal model granularity and organizes complex CNNs into sequential zones to balance communication and computation during execution. Our experimental evaluations show that Deep-Zoning is effective, achieving up to a 3.02x speed improvement on our experimental prototype compared to state-of-the-art algorithms.

Electronic voting can improve the efficiency, accuracy and fairness of voting, and save resources and costs. However, the identity privacy of voters may not be effectively protected during the counting process of third-party electronic voting. In order to solve the problems of transparency and identity privacy protection in electronic voting, this paper combines pseudonym mechanism and digital signature technology to propose a privacy protection scheme for double signature electronic voting based on Consortium blockchain. By introducing the Consortium Blockchain, the voting ciphertext is published on the Blockchain to realize the transparency of electronic voting and ensure the security of the voting;the introduction of the pseudonym mechanism can effectively protect the identity privacy of voters;the use of homomorphic encryption technology to realize ciphertext vote counting, it can effectively resist the internal attack of electronic voting;through double signature, that is, to sign the voting ciphertext and pseudonym to ensure the identity of the voter and the legitimacy of the vote. At the same time, a scoring mechanism is introduced to achieve more precise evaluation of candidates by voters, and the Bulletproof protocol is used to standardize the range of score. The electronic voting privacy protection scheme proposed in this paper can also satisfy multi-candidate voting and is applicable to various voting scenarios. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Novel quantum circuit implementation of Advanced Encryption Standard with low costs

In this study, we examine how the quantum circuit of the Advanced Encryption Standard(AES) can be optimized from two aspects, i.e., number of qubits and T-depth. To reduce the number of qubits, we present three kinds of improved quantum circuits of S-box for different phases in the AES. We found that the number of qubits in the round function can be decreased by introducing the circuit sending |a> to |S(a)>. As a result, compared with the previous quantum circuits where 400/640/768 qubits are required,our circuits of AES-128/-192/-256 only require 270/334/398 qubits. To reduce the T-depth, we propose a new circuit of AES's S-box with a T-depth of 4. Accordingly, the T-depth of our AES-128/-192/-256 quantum circuits become 80/80/84 instead of120/120/126 in a previous study.

As one of the promising technologies for 6G mobile system, the joint communication and sensing (JCS) technology can substantially empower communication network with the accurate environment perception ability, as well as enhanced communication performances enabled by the sensing ability. In this article, a communication-centric enabled JCS system has been designed, and the simulation platform has been developed by using different signaling and data payloads in each frame to evaluate the performances of communication and sensing functions. Hardware testbed has been implemented and the numerous field trail results prove the feasibility of the proposed JCS system, paving a fundamental way for the maturity of JCS enabled future 6G mobile system.

Joint Beamforming and Dynamic Beam Hopping Based on MAPPO for LEO Satellite Communication System

To meet time-varying and nonuniform service requirements, how to flexibly allocate resource-constrained to meet the traffic demands is an important topic in LEO satellite communication system. We introduce joint beamforming and dynamic beam hopping (BH) algorithm to support hybrid wide-spot beam coverage in LEO satellite communication system, which can transmit control signalling and user data simultaneous. Considering that the joint decision of beamforming and BH will lead to explosive growth of the action space dimension, a cooperative Multi-Agent Proximal Policy Optimization (MAPPO) algorithm is presented to solve this problem in hybrid wide-spot beam coverage scenario. The beamforming problem is decomposed into two subproblems, power allocation and analog beamforming problems. The analog beamforming problem is solved by ZF beamforming algorithm, and the power allocation and BH problems are solved by MAPPO algorithm. In MAPPO algorithm, each agent only undertakes the BH or power allocation decision of one beam. The agents learn to cooperate with others via shared rewards to achieve a common goal of maximize the system throughput and minimize the delay fairness (DF) while ensuring the minimum rate requirement of the control beam. Simulation results show that the MAPPO algorithm can achieve real-time BH and power allocation to match time-varying traffic requests. In addition, the proposed algorithm can achieve about 8 Mbps throughput gain compared with GABH.
