Surgery simulation system can provide a safe virtual training environment. Cutting of soft tissue plays a very important role in the system. During the operation, the soft tissue exhibits nonlinear property and topology change of the operated tissue usually causes the failure of the pre-computed quantity. The above reasons make the simulation of the real-time cutting a challenging task. This paper proposes a new cutting method, which pre-computes related quantities on the element level and locally modifies topology of soft tissue after cutting, avoiding re-computation of pre-computed data. This paper simulates real-time cutting of a liver model with more than 6000 elements. The proposed algorithm displays its ability to simulate cutting of soft tissue with nonlinear property within real time.

virtualreality (VR) is a scientific method and technology created during the exploration of the nature by human beings to understand, simulate, and better adapt and use the nature. Based on the analysis on the whole process of VR, this paper presents different categories of VR problems and a type of theoretical expression, and abstracts three kinds of scientific and technical problems in VR field. On the basis of foresaid content, this paper also studies current major research objectives, research results and development trend of VR in the aspects of VR modeling method, VR representation technology, human-machine interaction and devices, VR development suites and supporting infrastructure, as well as VR applications. Finally, several theoretical and technical problems that need to be further studied and solved are addressed.

Curve and surface blending is an important operation in CAD systems, in which a non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) has been used as the de facto standard. In local comer blending, two curves intersecting at that comer are first made disjoint, and then the third blending curve is added-in to smoothly join the two curves with G^1- or G^2-continuity. In this paper we present a study to solve the joint problem based on curve extension. The following nice properties of this extension algorithm are exploited in depth: (1) The parameterization of the original shapes does not change; (2) No additional fragments are created. Various examples are presented to demonstrate that our solution is simple and efficient.
