Entanglement between Two Uses of a Noisy Multipartite Quantum Channel Enables Perfect Transmission of Classical Information

Suppose that m senders want to transmit classical information to n receivers with zero probability of error using a noisy multipartite communication channel. The senders are allowed to exchange classical, but not quantum, messages among themselves, and the same holds for the receivers. If the channel is classical, a single use can transmit information if and only if multiple uses can. In sharp contrast, we exhibit, for each m and n with m>1 or n>1, a quantum channel of which a single use is not able to transmit information yet two uses can. This latter property requires and is enabled by quantum entanglement.

Sentiment Vector Space Model for Lyric-Based Song Sentiment Classification

Song sentiment analysis attracts much attention in research areas such as acoustic signal processing (ASP) and natural language processing (NLP). The text-based efforts in the NLP community are found to be interesting. As a popular text-based solution, the lyric-based sentiment classification approach adopts the vector space model (VSM) to represent lyric text and assigns songs sentiment labels such as light-hearted and heavy-hearted . Four problems render the term-based VSM model ineffective. Firstly, many words within song lyrics contribute little to expressing sentiment, but they are equally considered as term features. Secondly, nouns and verbs being used to express sentiment are ambiguously used in natural language text. But the ambiguity is not addressed. Thirdly, negations and modifiers accompanying the sentiment keywords make particular contributions to sentiment expressing, but the contributions are not reflected. Lastly, song lyric is usually very short and data sparseness problem is serious. To address these problems, the sentiment vector space model (s-VSM) is proposed in this paper to represent song lyric document based on sentiment unit. With the s-VSM model, the support vector machines (SVM) classification algorithm is applied to perform song sentiment analysis. Experimental results show that lyric is helpful to song sentiment analysis and the s-VSM model outperforms the VSM model significantly in performing the task of song sentiment analysis.

In this paper, asymptotic stability of uncalibrated eye-in-hand visual servoing is proved in an affine invariance perspective. After a brief retrospection on the uncalibrated eye-in-hand visual servoing, the affine invariance framework is introduced with discussion in depth. Then the visual servoing algorithm is reconstructed in an affine invariance framework, or more precisely as an affine contravariance algorithm, with its complete asymptotic stability proved, proposed as a convergence theorem. The affine invariance perspective enroots the series algorithm on a more solid and fruitful mathematical background and finally, the paper would discuss several potential research realms of the topic of visual servoing.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate all optical format conversion from non-return-to-zero (NRZ) format to frequency-shift-keying (FSK) format based on free carrier dispersion effect in a silicon mode-split microring resonator. The injection of the high-power NRZ signal generates free carriers leading to the blue shift of the spectrum when a '1' comes. Therefore, there is a selective filtering for the two probes with certain separation located at different position of the split mode according to the information carried by the NRZ signal. Then the NRZ signal is converted to the FSK format. The microring resonator features ultra-compact size with a radius of 10 urn thus is suitable for integration with silicon-on-insulator (SOI) based optical and electronic devices. The split mode can provide large and variable frequency deviation for the FSK signal. 1 Gb/s NRZ signal is successfully converted to FSK format with a frequency deviation of 40 GHz, which can find application for interconnection between a metropolitan area networks (MAN) and a passive optical network (PON) system. © 2008 SPIE.

All-optical virtual private network (VPN), which offers dedicated optical channels to connect users within a VPN group,is considered a promising approach to efficient internetworking with low latency and enhanced security implemented in the physical layer. On the other hand, time-division multiplexed (TDM) / wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) network architecture based on a feeder-ring with access-tree topology, is considered a pragmatic migration scenario from current TDM-PONs to future WDM-PONs and a potential convergence scheme for access and metropolitan networks,due to its efficiently shared hardware and bandwidth resources. All-optical VPN internetworking in such a metro-access integrated structure is expected to cover a wider service area and therefore is highly desirable. In this paper, we present a TDM/WDM metro-access integrated network supporting all-optical VPN internetworking among ONUs in different sub- PONs based on orthogonal differential-phase-shift keying (DPSK) / amplitude-shift keying (ASK) modulation format. In each ONU, no laser but a single Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) is needed for the upstream and VPN signal generation, which is cost-effective. Experiments and simulations are performed to verify its feasibility as a potential solution to the future access service. © 2008 SPIE.

One of the basic characteristics in human problem solving is the ability to conceptualize the world at different granularities and translate from one abstraction level to the others easily. But so far computers can only deal with one abstraction level in problem solving generally. It seems important to develop new techniques which will in some way enable the computers to represent the world at different granularities. So the multi-granular representation is the key to machine intelligence. In the talk, we first introduce the quotient space based problem solving theory. In the theory, a problem is represented by a triplet (X,F,T), where X - the universe with the finest grain-size, F -the attribute of X, and T- the structure of X. When we view the same problem at a coarser grain size, we have a coarse-grained universe denoted by [X]. Then we have a new representation ([X],[F],[T]) of the problem. The coarse universe [X] is defined by an equivalence relation R on X. Then, representation ([X],[F],[T]) is called a quotient space of(X,F,T), where [X] -the quotient set of X, [F] -the quotient attribute of F, and [T] -the quotient structure of T. Obviously, the set of representations of a problem at different granularities composes a complete semi-order lattice. That is, in the theory the concept, quotient space, in algebra is used as a mathematical model to represent the relationship between representations with different grain-sizes. Multi-granular representation methodology can be used both in problem solving and machine learning. In multi-granular problem solving, a problem is solved from the coarse grain-size to the fine one hierarchically. The aim of hierarchical problem solving is intended to reduce the computational complexity. Multi-granular machine learning is intended to learn the knowledge from representations with different grain-size, i.e., the so-called multi-information fusion. Generally speaking, the fine representation has more details but less robustness.

The reconstruction of maxillofacial bone defects by the intraoperative modeling of implants may reduce the predictability of the esthetic result, leading to more invasive surgery and increased surgical time. To improve the maxillofacial surgery outcome, modern manufacturing methods such as rapid prototyping (RP) technology and methods based on reverse engineering (RE) and medical imaging data are applicable to the manufacture of custom-made maxillary prostheses. After acquisition of data, an individual computer-based 3D model of the bony defect is generated. These data are transferred into RE software to create the prosthesis using a computer-aided design (CAD) model, which is directed into the RP machine for the production of the physical model. The precise fit of the prosthesis is evaluated using the prosthesis and skull models. The prosthesis is then directly used in investment casting such as "Quick Cast" pattern to produce the titanium model. In the clinical reports presented here, reconstructions of two patients with large maxillary bone defects were performed using this new method. The custom prostheses perfectly fit the defects during the operations, and surgery time was reduced. These cases show that the prefabrication of a prosthesis using modern manufacturing technology is an effective method for maxillofacial defect reconstruction. © 2007 by The American College of Prosthodontists.

In this paper, we propose a new fast semi-supervised image segmentation method based on augmented tree partitioning. Unlike many existing methods that use a graph structure to model the image, we use a tree-based structure called the augmented tree, which is built up by augmenting several abstract label nodes to the minimum spanning tree of the original graph. We then model image segmentation as the partitioning problem on the augmented tree. Dynamic programming is used to efficiently solve the optimization problem. Experimental results show that our method gives competitive segmentation results, and the speed is much faster than graph- based methods.

Traditional tonality mode (major or minor) classification or audio key finding algorithms often rely on tonic annotations (key names) of the training songs. However, unlike classical music whose keys are usually explicitly labeled in their titles, the keys of numerous popular music are hard to obtain. In contrast, it is much easier to only label the mode for each song. With only modes labeled, traditional approaches to key or mode classification cannot be directly applied, due to the lack of the reference point to transpose and align the chroma features with different keys. In this paper, we present an alignment approach to transpose chroma features within each mode to a reference (but unknown) tonic. Then several methods, including Single Profile Correlation, Multiple Profile Correlation and Support Vector Machine, are exploited to address mode learning and classification. Experimental results show the feasibility of the proposed approach.

Vision based ping-pong ball tracking with physical model

This paper proposes a novel vision based ping-pong (table tennis) ball tracking system. And it can generate the ping-pong ball trace in real time with the aiding of a transcendent trace model. Our approach only need three high speed digital cameras, which could cover whole the ball flight trace and decrease the cost of the tracking system. Our tracking system sets up a theoretical ping-pong ball trace model, and then a Kalman filter method is used to fuse the final trace with the data from three cameras based on the trace model. The experiment results show our system could track the ping-pong ball reasonably and generate the smooth trace of the ping-pong ball in real time. 1548-7741/Copyright © 2008 Binary Information Press October 2008.
