Parallel file systems suffer performance degradation of small files generated by many workloads. We provide the systematic analysis of the small files problem from aspects of both parallel file system architecture and workload characteristics. Based on the analysis, we discuss the deficiencies of current optimizations and propose several open questions and possible research directions to address the problem. © 2011 IEEE.

Building a 3D geological model from field and subsurface data is a typical task in geological studies involving natural resource study. Constructing volume from surface model is an important step of the whole modeling process. In this paper, we present an efficient and robust approach based on the spatial topology to construct volume from surface model even with non-manifold boundary representation. This algorithm finds the surrounding surface of the volume by traversing the stratigraphic binary tree which indicating the spatial topology relation. Our algorithm meets the demanding requirements of interactive model editing and also can be used at numerical simulation. Results from field data modeling illustrate that the proposal method is effective and efficient. © 2011 IEEE.

The separate development between the storage system and scientific application has hidden most of internal implementation strategies of the storage system from the scientific application designers. This would worsen the existing I/O bottleneck problem of most scientific applications to some extent. To address this problem, this study chooses the matrix and its parallel outof- core product algorithm to study the interactions between the applications and the parallel storage system. Especially, the data distribution and access interfaces of the matrix are analyzed and optimized firstly. Then, the communication among processes are incorporated into the parallel out-of-core matrix multiplication algorithm to reduce its disk access times. Experiments show that the proposed optimizations can reduce the time spent in accessing data from disk and accelerate the parallel out-of-core matrix product. © 2011 IEEE.

The fast development of internet application is boosting the development of cloud computing, a new paradigm of provisioning computing infrastructure and services over network. In cloud computing environment, MapReduce is often used to perform scientific computing like matrix multiplication and do data mining and information extraction on massive data. Hadoop, an open-source implementation of MapReduce, is a suitable tool to parallelly deal with these kinds of applications. While current hadoop environments are mainly deployed on physical servers manually and are lack of flexibility. This paper proposes the EHAD (Elastic Hadoop Auto-Deployer) system to creates/destroys corresponding number of VM nodes and deploys/releases hadoop environment among the VM nodes for client users in service level. We also propose multithreading and VMOP (Virtual Machine Optimized Placement) to improve the service quality of EHAD. Experiments show that our EHAD system can deploy a hadoop cluster on demand in less than 300 seconds. The multithread method could shorten the time consumption of creating 28 VMs by 3 times and VMOP policy could improve the runtime performance of hadoop cluster by 9.73 percent. © 2011 IEEE.

Recently, cloud computing has emerged as a new computing paradigm on the Internet. With the development of cloud computing, enterprise data centers shift towards a utility computing model where many critical business applications share a common pool of infrastructure resources offering capacity on demand. The virtual machine with the features of strong isolation and flexible is usually assigned as the basic unit. However, as the demand of each type of VM can fluctuate independently at run time, it becomes a challenging problem to allocate data center resources to each VM to balance the workload in the cloud. In this paper, we introduce an approach (Statistic based Load Balance, SLB) that makes use of the statistical prediction and availab.e resource evaluation mechanism to make online resource allocation decisions. Unlike the methods that balance load based on SLA (Service Level Agreement) of VMs, SLB achieves load balancing by predicting the VM's resource demand. The approach includes two parts:(1) A data analysis of on-line historical performance for forecasting the resource demand of each VM, and (2) An algorithm for choosing a proper host in the resource pool to run the VM. Experiments show that SLB can perform load balance in time, and also perform more balanced use of different resources. © 2011 IEEE.

With the rapid development of internet applications, more and more network service and commercial applications are deployed to cloud computing environment, with petabytes of data to be processed. MapReduce is one of the most famous solutions for large-scale data processing. This paper focuses on optimizing the scheduler of MapReduce framework in task level. We care about the hardware configuration and real-time workload of the nodes in a hadoop cluster and aim at shortening time cost of MapReduce jobs and improving hardware resource utilization rate. We put forward a loaddriven task scheduler which assigns tasks to TaskTrackers according to the workload of slave nodes. It is based on a Dynamic Slot Controller (DSC) that can adjust Map task Slot (MS) and Reduce task Slot (RS) of TaskTrackers running on slave nodes adaptively. Our load-driven task scheduler can shorten time consumption of MapReduce job by 14% and improve the CPU utilization rate of hadoop cluster by 34% when processing 10GB data. © 2011 IEEE.

AS well as in real physical environment, time subsystem is also a vital part in the distributed virtual environment. DVMM, based on multi-nodes and achieves single system image, has faced with the challenge of the time accuracy. High Precision Event Timers which is broad supported in current Linux kernel as a system clock source and can even be used to replace of PIT and TSC, can improve the accuracy of measuring time which relies on independent counters. For the DVMM, we design and implement the simulation of HPET, which includes HPET structure, HPET initialization, and callback function. GOS detects HPET device when system starting up. Then DVMM captures this action, simulates the time measuring with HPET, and keeps time much more accurately, in order to satisfy the requirement of the application. At last, we verify the HPET module by running the GOS. © 2011 IEEE.

Network addressing is a traditional problem in communications network. IP addressing which can fully reflect the characteristics of Wireless Sensor Network will provide good support for the design of network routing and management protocols. The location information which is important in most of WSN application can be used to simplify routing policy, and is also supported by IPv6. In this paper, we propose a location-based IP addressing protocol. We assume that nodes in Wireless Sensor Network know their current physical location;thus, this location information can be exploited to facilitate the generation of Location-based IP address. This paper describes Location-based IP addressing architecture for WSNs multicast and unicast within a local or metropolitan environment using two-dimensional address structures and analyzes the implementation in 6LoWPAN. © 2011 IEEE.

Spectra-based fault localization (SFL) techniques have brought encouraging results and a variety of program spectra have been proposed to locate faults. Different types of abnormal behaviors may be revealed by different kinds of spectra. Compared to techniques using single spectra type, techniques combining multiple types of spectra try to leverage the strengths of the constituent types. However, in the presence of multiple kinds of spectra, how to select adequate spectra type and build appropriate models need further investigation. In this paper, we propose an SFL technique LOUPE, which uses multiple spectra-specific models. Both control and data dependences are introduced to capture unusual behaviors of faults. In the stage of suspiciousness modeling, in contrast with previous studies, we build different models to evaluate the suspiciousness of statements for each spectra type respectively. Finally, since the fault type is unknown in advance, suspiciousness scores are calculated based on the two models. We evaluate LOUPE on the Siemens benchmark and experimental results show that our technique is promising. © 2011 ACM.

Symbolic execution based test generation has made progress in recent years. However, in order to scale to larger programs there are some issues to be solved. Among them, generating a set of feasible paths to achieve high coverage gets more attention. In this paper, we focus on how to increase covering efficiency while maintaining high coverage. To achieve high branch coverage efficiently, we propose a path generation approach DYNASTY. A heuristic search strategy based on branch residual is used to guide branch selection. To avoid repetitive path exploration, a data structure named path trie is introduced to store paths generated. We have implemented our approach and conducted primary experiments. Our approach achieves high branch coverage quickly on the subjects. © 2011 IEEE.
