In this paper, a unique road contour extraction approach from high resolution satellite image is proposed, in which the road contour was extracted in two steps. Firstly, support vector machines (SVM) was employed merely to classify the image into two groups of categories: a road group and a non-road group. The identified road group images are the discrete and irregularly distributed sampled points, and they are an uncompleted data set for the road. Secondly, the road contour was extracted from the road group images using the tensor voting framework, since the tensor voting technique is superior to the traditional methods in extracting the geometrical structure from the uncompleted data set. The experimental results on the high resolution satellite image demonstrate that the proposed approach worked well with images comprised by both rural and urban area features.

A novel Parallel-Based Lifting Algorithm （PBLA） for Discrete Wavelet Transform （DWT）, exploiting the parallelism of arithmetic operations in all lifting steps, is proposed in this paper. It leads to reduce the critical path latency of computation, and to reduce the complexity of hardware implementation as well. The detailed derivation on the proposed algorithm, as well as the resulting Very Large Scale Integration （VLSI） architecture, is introduced, taking the 9/7 DWT as an example but without loss of generality. In comparison with the Conventional Lifting Algorithm Based Implementation （Clab.）, the critical path latency of the proposed architecture is reduced by more than half from （4Tm ＋ 8Ta）to Tm ＋ 4Ta, and is competitive to that of Convolution-Based Implementation （CBI）, but the new implementation will save significantly in hardware. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed architecture has good performance in both increasing working frequency and reducing area.

BoostTree and BoostForest for Ensemble Learning

Bootstrap aggregating (Bagging) and boosting are two popular ensemble learning approaches, which combine multiple base learners to generate a composite model for more accurate and more reliable performance. They have been widely used in biology, engineering, healthcare, etc. This paper proposes BoostForest, which is an ensemble learning approach using BoostTree as base learners and can be used for both classification and regression. BoostTree constructs a tree model by gradient boosting. It increases the randomness (diversity) by drawing the cut-points randomly at node splitting. BoostForest further increases the randomness by bootstrapping the training data in constructing different BoostTrees. BoostForest generally outperformed four classical ensemble learning approaches (Random Forest, Extra-Trees, XGBoost and LightGBM) on 35 classification and regression datasets. Remarkably, BoostForest tunes its parameters by simply sampling them randomly from a parameter pool, which can be easily specified, and its ensemble learning framework can also be used to combine many other base learners. Coordinated Guiding Vector Field Design for Ordering-Flexible Multi-Robot Surface Navigation

We design a distributed coordinated guiding vector field (CGVF) for a group of robots to achieve ordering-flexible motion coordination while maneuvering on a desired two-dimensional (2D) surface. The CGVF is characterized by three terms, i.e., a convergence term to drive the robots to converge to the desired surface, a propagation term to provide a traversing direction for maneuvering on the desired surface, and a coordinated term to achieve the surface motion coordination with an arbitrary ordering of the robotic group. By setting the surface parameters as additional virtual coordinates, the proposed approach eliminates potential singularity of the CGVF and enables both the global convergence to the desired surface and the maneuvering on the surface from all possible initial conditions. The ordering-flexible surface motion coordination is realized by each robot to share with its neighbors only two virtual coordinates, i.e. that of a given target and that of its own, which reduces the communication and computation cost in multi-robot surface navigation. Redundancy makes soft manipulators manage to complete a variety of tasks in complex environments. However, a pseudo-inverse kinematics controller for redundant soft manipulators simply maximizes the manipulab.lity while ignoring some material constraints, e.g., actuation saturation and control noise. As manipulab.lity is the indicator for the dexterity of motion in all directions of the redundant soft manipulators, this work proposes an optimization based controller, where the manipulab.lity and robustness are optimized for a cable-driven redundant soft manipulator to adapt actuation saturation and control noise. Experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

This paper proposes a genetic-based algorithm for surface reconstruction of three-dimension (3-D) objects from a group of contours representing its section plane lines. The algorithm can optimize the triangulation of the surface of 3-D objects with a multi-objective optimization function to meet the needs of a wide range of applications. Further, a new crossover operator for triangulation and a new 3-D quadrilateral mutation operator are also introduced.

A brain-computer interface (BCI) establishes a direct communication pathway between the human brain and a computer. It has been widely used in medical diagnosis, rehabilitation, education, entertainment, etc. Most research so far focuses on making BCIs more accurate and reliable, but much less attention has been paid to their privacy. Developing a commercial BCI system usually requires close collab.rations among multiple organizations, e.g., hospitals, universities, and/or companies. Input data in BCIs, e.g., electroencephalogram (EEG), contain rich privacy information, and the developed machine learning model is usually proprietary. Data and model transmission among different parties may incur significant privacy threats, and hence privacy protection in BCIs must be considered. Unfortunately, there does not exist any contemporary and comprehensive review on privacy-preserving BCIs. This paper fills this gap, by describing potential privacy threats and protection strategies in BCIs. It also points out several challenges and future research directions in developing privacy-preserving BCIs. © 2024, CC BY.

Materials and methods 43 patients with intracranial micro-aneurysms were analyzed retrospectively, all patients had undergone angiography with both conventional 2D-DSA(Two-Dimensional Digital Subtraction Angiography) and rotational angiography with three-dimensional reconstruction; the frequency of detection of aneurysms, depiction of aneurysm neck, radiation dose, and the dosage of contrast agent were recorded respectively. Results 55 pieces of aneurysms were detected out from the 43 cases with intracranial micro-aneurysms by 3D-RA. But only 39 cases were detected out using 2D-DSA from the 55 samples, there were significant differences with regards to detection rate (P < 0.05). There were significant differences in radiation dose and dosage of contrast agent (P < 0.05) between the two methods of using 3D-RA can improve the detection rate of micro-aneurysms, which bestows obvious advantages on displaying the shape of aneurysms, the aneurysm neck at the best angle, and the relationship with the parent artery, at the same time, the amount of contrast agent and radiation dose are reduced in 3D-RA compared to 2D-DSA.
