The analysis of the carotid artery wall is of paramount importance in clinical practice. Especially, the intima-media thickness is a risk index for some of the most severe acute cerebrovascular pathologies, hence, an accurate segmentation of the different layers of the carotid artery is needed. IMT is usually manually measured on longitudinal B-mode ultrasound images. In the past ten years, many computer-based techniques for intima-media thickness measurement have been proposed to overcome the limits of manual segmentation, but almost all of them require a certain degree of user interaction. In this paper we proposed a novel approach for the completely user-independent segmentation of the common carotid artery wall. Our algorithm is designed for the extraction of the intima and media layers of the distal carotid wall in ultrasound images. It is based on integrated approach consisting of common carotid artery region identification, contour initialization with threshold segmentation, intima-lumen segmentation with Snake, and media-adventitia segmentation with GVF-Snake that enables the automated tracing of the carotid walls. The acoustic impedance's difference is employed to locate common carotid artery region. Finally, the characterization of the algorithm in terms of segmentation error was evaluated with a set of 40 common carotid artery ultrasound images and compared to the segmentation traced by a trained operator. Experiments showed that a mean error lower than 1.3 pixel both on the intima and media layers was obtained, which is comparable to that obtained by means of operator dependent techniques. © 2011 IEEE.

In order to realize automatic image mosaic with HJ-1 satellite images, this paper proposes a bisector seamline algorithm which is based on the geometric characters of the remote sensing images valid areas. Firstly, the valid area is used to replace primitive rectangle image to participate in image mosaic, the feathering seamline is automatically generated on valid area. Then the seamline is effectively removed by an improved feathering algorithm. Finally, through the mosaic experiment on a group of 9 remote sensing images, the experimental result indicates that the new algorithm is applicable for complex polygon overlap, easy to realize and has a good visual effect. © 2011 IEEE.

A novel image threshold selection approach based on structural similarity (SSIM) is proposed. The thresholded image is obtained first, then comparison regions are extracted based on the local variance of the neighborhood of the thresholded image. Due to the characteristic of comparison regions, the conventional SSIM expression is simplified as a nonparametric form, and the partial SSIM (PSSIM) is defined. The optimal threshold is selected by maximizing the PSSIM criterion function at last. Besides the introduction of a novel approach, this is also the first attempt to expand the application scope of SSIM to range image thresholding in general. The proposed approach has an advantage over thresholding methods based on the histogram. The method was tested on a variety of images including the synthetic image and real images. Experimental results show that the proposed approach achieves better applicability, preferable ability for extracting object and better anti-noise capability than popular methods.

According to the drawback of the traditional circle target extraction algorithm from high resolution remote sensing imagery used by Hough Transform, such as computation complexity, low efficiency and etc, a new circle target extraction method is proposed in this paper which can extract multiple circle targets with different radius at one time. First, the Average Absolute Difference is implemented to enhance the edge of the circle targets and suppress the noise of the background. Secondly, the locally self-adaptive segmentation algorithm is implemented to obtain the binary image. Thirdly, the thinning algorithm based on model computation is implanted to obtain the single pixel edge of the circle targets and in order to reduce the computation times in the following process. Furthermore, a pruning algorithm is necessary; finally, a modified Hough transform algorithm is proposed to obtain the circle targets. The experimental results demonstrate that the new circle targets algorithm can extract the multiple circle targets quickly and accurately, which has three advantages: low time consuming, high detection rate, robust to noise and fragmentary boundaries.

By using wavelet transform modulus maximum principle for non-stationary signal singularity detection is a kind of very good method. Through to the various wavelet singularity extracted, the analysis results can be divided into four types: accurate location, the approximate location, overlapping effect, rim effect. According to the classification we learn the optimal wavelet basis should has the following features: the optimum wavelet basis should have strong ability of detecting and precision, and at the same time the influence of overlap and rim should be as small as possible. According to these characteristics, a discriminant function is constructed. The wavelet basis makes the largest discriminant function value is optimal. The experimental results show that the method in this paper according to find out the optimum wavelet basis did more than other wavelet detection effect better.

Stroke and heart attack, which could be led by a kind of cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease named asatherosclerosis, would seriously cause human morbidity and mortality. And the carotid artery of intima-media thickness (IMT) is a key indicator to the disease. With the development of computer assisted diagnosis (CAD) technology, Ultrasound imaging, being real-time, economic, reliable, safe, and now seems to become a standard in vascular assessment methodology especially for the measurement of IMT. This review is an attempt to discuss the clinical relevance of measurements in clinical practice at first, and then followed by the challenges that one has to face when approaching the segmentation of ultrasound images. Secondly, the paper is presentation of common used methods for the IMT segmentation and measurement. An overview of summary and future perspectives is given in conclusion finally.

The Discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is an important tool in digital signal processing. In this paper, a novel approach to DFT is proposed. The computation of DFT is transformed to the computation of the first-order moments by the simple mathematical deductions. It is well known that the first-order moments can be computed efficiently using only additions. An efficient systolic array is designed to implement DFT. The comparison with the existing methods shows the advantages of our method. The approach is also applicable to DFT inverses. © 2010 IEEE.
