Gaussian mixture model is a popular method to model dynamic scenes viewed by a fixed camera. However, we found that it is not a trivial problem for each component of Gaussian mixture to learn the accurate parameters for complex pixels. Furthermore, traditional method of Gaussian mixture has to make a tradeoff between system stability and convergence rate. We developed a mechanism of double-layer Gaussian mixture model for moving object detection from dynamic scenes, which can improve the convergence rate without compromising the system stability. Additionally, temporal consistency of variances was taken into account to alleviate camouflage problems in the process of detection.

Discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is an important tool in digital signal processing. We have proposed an approach to performing DFT via linear sums of discrete moments. In this paper, based on the previous work, we present a new method of performing fast Fourier transform without multiplications by performing appropriate bit operations and shift operations in binary system, which can be implemented by integer additions of fixed points. The systolic implementation is a demonstration of the locality of dataflow in the algorithms and hence it implies an easy and potential hardware/VLSI realization. The approach is also applicable to DFT inverses.

Scene-based adaptive non-uniformity correction (NUC) of Infrared Focal Plane Array (IRFPA) has been a key technology. However, all the scene-based correction methods require that the objects be in the state of motion. Once objects that don't move enough tend to be "melt" into the background, the target fade-out and ghost artifacts will occur in the corrected image. On the other hand, although some scene-based algorithms eliminate the non-uniformity effectively, the computations are complicated, and so it is difficult to be implemented by VLSI technique. In this work we propose a new adaptive algorithm based on motion information and the steep descent method. The simulation shows that the new algorithm has inhibited target fade-out and eliminated the ghost artifacts effectively. As the proposed algorithm characterized by inherent parallelism, modularity and regularity, we also propose its parallel VLSI architecture and implement it using 0.18m CMOS technology. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Based on Particle Filter, Gravity Gradient-Terrain aided position technology is proposed in this paper. With the sensitivity of gravity gradient to terrain, the gravity gradient reference map can be computed from the local terrain elevation data. The position can be actualized through matching the real-time measured gravity gradient data to the prepared gravity gradient reference map. The most widely used approximate filtering method is the extended Kaman filter (EKF). EKF is computationally simple but, the convergence of the state estimation for the position is not guaranteed. Particle filter (PF) makes use of the non-linear state and measurement functions, no linearization technology is needed. PF can assure the convergence of the state estimation which follows from the classical results on convergence of Bayesian estimators. Simulations have been done and Particle filter has been shown to be a superior alternative to the EKF in the gravity gradient-terrain matching navigation systems. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

The visual effect is an important fact in the coding algorithm. So the saliency of visual attention(SVA) can be used to determine the region of interest(ROI) in the ROI image coding. A novel SVA based ROI(SVA-ROI) image coding scheme is presented for the reconnaissance satellite systems. As the SVA of the original image and reconstructed image are usually the same, the same ROI can be automatically determined in the encoder and decoder with the SVA. Then the ROI side information is no need to be transmitted and the compression efficiency can be improved. Experimental results have demonstrated that SVA-ROI has better visual effect than the similar algorithms, which will be suitable for the reconnaissance satellite systems. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Automatic 3-D building reconstruction is the key technology of "digital city" construction, which can be widely used in urban planning and management. In this paper, we firstly analyze the disadvantages in traditional automatic building reconstruction methods, and then according to characteristics of complex buildings, which is multi-storey and non-flattopped, a new automatic building reconstruction method is proposed, which can solve the complex building reconstruction problem effectively and conveniently. The reconstruction experiments show that the proposed method has excellent universality, besides a small calculating amount compared with traditional methods. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Correlation match is widely used in the field of target recognition for its stability and adaptability, but traditional correlation matching does not meet the demand for real time performance. For this reason, this paper presents an improved recursive pyramid correlation image matching algorithm and accomplishes the algorithm's parallel implementation on multi-DSPs interconnected by FPGA with using several effective optimization strategies. Moreover, we design detailed experiments which give a comparison of different matching speed using optimization methods step by step. The results prove that our system is the best optimum with high efficiency compared with conventional methods. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

This paper presents an implementation of a real-time video surveillance system based on TMS320DM6437 DVDP (Digital Video Development Platform). We propose an improved motion detection method based on adaptive Gaussian Mixture Model. In tracking module, association matrix is built between two frames for targets association according to a kind of cost function of features. Besides, Mean Shift algorithm is used to predict targets' parameters, so target tracking can be maintained in the case of short-term loss. In the test scene, the system shows a satisfactory performance. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

In this paper, the joint distribution of the Nonsubsampled Contourlet Transform coefficients is studied. It is found that the estimation of the joint distribution is implement impossible due to the complex of joint empirical distribution function and dependence of NSCT coefficient vector components. To distinguish different joint distributions of different images, the sample covariance matrix feature is proposed. The texture retrieval experiment is conducted in order to evaluate the performance of the sample covariance matrix feature. The result shows that the proposed feature is efficient in representing the texture and the difference of the joint distribution of the Nonsubsampled Contourlet Transform coefficients. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

This paper focuses on preprocessing methods for the infrared images. Due to noises, low contrast and local difference of materials, Forward-looking Infrared targets have a great difference of local gray levels. Such different gray levels add the difficulty of targets detection and may lead a decrease in accuracy and rate of detection in Gray-based template matching. To overcome the difficulty, we present a novel preprocessing method based on non-subsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) which is good at multi-direction and multi-scale. This method firstly do Non-subsampled contourlet transform to infrared images. The level of decomposition is decided by the size of the template which is considered as the basic structure and the directions of decomposition are chosen by the imaging angles. Then we reconstruct the image according to the coefficients of the decomposition. Experiments based on template matching in forward-looking infrared images show that the proposed preprocessing method based on NSCT can significantly improve the detection rate (DR) and the stability. Experimental results also show that our proposed method has better performance than some other preprocessing methods. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.
