A track-before-detect (TBD) algorithm based on elliptical Hough transform (EHT) is presented for jointly detecting and tracking weak ballistic targets during its exoatmospheric flight. The new method makes use of the fact that the ballistic target follows the elliptical orbit when restricted to two-body problem. The relationship between raw radar measurements in the data space and the elliptical parameters in the parameter space is established with coordinate transformations. The EHT detection algorithm is designed and the orbit planarity is also considered to reduce the noise accumulation effect. The detection performances related to primary and second thresholds and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are analyzed and verified through simulations. The advantage of the new method lies in it can not only detect and track weak ballistic targets but also can predict the impact point by using availab.e parameters.

The spatial uncertainties of atom force microscopy (AFM) tip position hinder the AFM based nano-manipulation. Although the landmark based tip localization can be applied to improve the tip position accuracy in the task space, the PZT nonlinearity and system drift are still a challenge to compensation performance when the tip is positioned far from the landmark. Therefore this paper proposes an active landmark configuration. This method first estimates the nearby area called as the landmark domain around the target position, and then actively manipulates the landmark into the landmark domain by using virtual hand to improve the positioning accuracy. Simulation and experiment illustrate the validity of the proposed method.

Scalar field mapping has many applications including environmental monitoring, search and rescue, etc. In such applications there is a need to achieve a certain level of confidence regarding the estimates at each location. In this paper, a cooperative and active sensing framework is developed to enable scalar field mapping using multiple mobile sensor nodes. The cooperative and active controller is designed via the real-time feedback of the sensing performance to steer the mobile sensors to new locations in order to improve the sensing quality. During the movement of the mobile sensors, the measurements from each sensor node and its neighbors are taken and fused with the corresponding confidences using distributed consensus filters. As a result an online map of the scalar field is built with a certain level of confidence of the estimates. We conducted computer simulations to validate and evaluate our proposed algorithms

electromagnetic brake (EMBr) has been applied in the molten steel to control the meniscus characteristics and stabilize the meniscus fluctuation. The nail dipping method has been developed to actively determine the mold top surface velocity in a certain slab.caster. The shape of the meniscus profile and direction of flow are quantified by analyzing the angular profile of the lump for each solidified nail, which indicates that the meniscus level fluctuates with time variation and the EMBr can make the meniscus level flatter and lower. The correlation between the height difference of the solidified lump on the nail and surface velocity is confirmed and extended. The error evaluation for each lump measurement is also discussed. Furthermore the effect of magnetic field on the fluid flow in the mold has been investigated.
