In this paper, we propose an architecture for highspeed real-time passive HTTP traffic performance measurement. High-speed real-time measurement is hard to realize due to the requirement of high capturing and processing power. We introduce network processor to solve this problem. Then we deploy the system at the Internet access link of a campus network, and demonstrate the processing capability and feasibility of this architecture through the measurement results. © 2011 IEEE.

BitTorrent(BT) has emerged as one of the most popular protocols for content sharing in recent years. Most BT applications are network-oblivious which brings great challenges to traffic engineering. As basic input information, network-wide BT traffic distribution is of vital importance for service providers (SP) or carriers to enforce appropriate control policies. Direct online measurement of network-wide BT traffic faces scalab.lity issue, for it requires deploying application identification deep packet inspection (DPI) device on every subject link. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to estimate network-wide BT traffic distribution through combining sFlow and Tracker traffic analysis. Owing to a noticeable increase of BT traffic using random port numbers, sFlow alone is no longer sufficient for BT recognition. We tackle this problem by combining sFlow with information collected from BT tracker's traffic. With assistance of this information, BT samples can be accurately distinguished from other sFlow samples. The efficacy of our approach is evaluated through experiments on backbone links of campus network. Evaluation results show that our approach can reach a high accuracy in network-wide BT traffic estimation. © 2011 IEEE.

Self-healing optical access networks (SHOAN) operated by optical switching technologies

An optical access network should offer low-cost reliable services to its end users. To address this problem, an optimal solution is needed which can turn an optical access architecture into a self-healing system. Hence, we propose the Self-Healing optical Access network (SHOAN), in which two or more optical access architectures are partners of each other, and they are interconnected by elementary optical crossbar switches into a simple mesh network. In SHOAN, the crossbar switches can keep each access architecture as an independent and closed system for only serving its own end users in normal state. But the crossbars become open in fault scenarios. Whenever a failure occurs in the network, the fault can be monitored and affected services can be recovered by the partner of the access architecture that is affected. Such an interconnected optical access network can withstand failures in its transmission paths, and recover network services in a self-healing way. Compared to existing solutions (e.g., dual-home architecture), illustrative examples demonstrate that SHOAN has many desirable properties: (1) it is robust because risks are disjointed, (2) it is reliable because service recovery is given top priority, and (3) it has low cost because redundant backup components are not necessary since the partner's resources act as backup resources. Analysis results show that SHOAN can minimize disruption duration and network cost for broadband access services. © 2011 IEEE.

We present a theory of the multi-threshold second-order phase transition,and experimentally demonstrate the multi-threshold secondorder phase transition *** carefully selected parameters,in an external cavity diode laser system,we observe secondorder phase transition with multiple(three or four) thresholds in the measured power-current-temperature three dimensional phase *** controlled death and revival of second-order phase transition sheds new insight into the nature of ubiquitous secondorder phase *** theory and experiment show that the single threshold second-order phase transition is only a special case of the more general multi-threshold second-order phase transition,which is an even richer phenomenon.

Joint scheduling of both computation and communication resources for workflow based distributed computing application over optical networks has been studied recently. Most algorithms proposed in previous work are mainly based on static scheduling strategies with assumption that detail resource information and accurate performance prediction is availab.e. In this paper, we propose to employ shared virtualized optical network (VON) for the task scheduling problem. Both customers and carriers can benefit from such architecture with better flexibility and scalab.lity. Based on a new Scheduled Result Graph (SRG) concept, we propose a computation and communication delay aware rescheduling (C2DAR) scheme to deal with the dynamics from shared VON resources. We evaluate the performance of dynamic scheduling scheme over shared VON in comparison to the static scheduling over dedicated VON and entire optical network respectively. Simulation results also show that C2DAR scheme outperforms traditional computation delay aware rescheduling (CDAR) scheme under shared VON scenario. © 2011 IEEE.

High speed data encryption and decryption using stimulated Brillouin scattering effect in optical fiber

A novel all-optical encryption/decryption method based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect in optical fiber is proposed for the first time. The operation principle is explained in detail and the encryption and decryption performance is experimentally evaluated. The encryption keys could be the SBS gain amplitude, bandwidth, central wavelength and spectral shape, which are configurable and flexibly controlled by the users. We experimentally demonstrate the SBS encryption/decryption process of a 10.86-Gb/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ) data by using both phase-modulated and current-dithered Brillouin pumps for proof-of-concept. Unlike the traditional optical encryption methods of chaotic communications and optical code-division-multiplexing access (OCDMA), the SBS based encryption/decryption technique can directly upgrade the current optical communication system to a secure communication system without changing the terminal transceivers, which is completely compatible with the current optical communication systems. © 2011 SPIE.
