The paper presents a novel energy efficient routing scheme for photonic network on chip (PNoC) based on the microresonator which takes the insertion loss and the path-setup latency into consideration in order to design a high performance per watt multi-processors. The path-setup latency is a major contributor to the whole system's latency that has something to do with queuing. And insertion loss which has impact on power consumption is closely related to the number of micro-resonators in on state. To solve the multi-objective optimization problem, we design a straight line first heuristic routing scheme. The goal of this routing scheme is to reduce the path-setup latency and insertion loss. Simulation results show that this scheme can low the latency with lower the insertion loss as little as possible.

We propose a novel scheme to overlay multicast service over a wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) passive optical network (PON) based on dynamic wavelength reflection scheme. At the optical line terminal (OLT), for each WDM channel, a dynamic wavelength reflector is used to selectively bypass the corresponding optical carrier to avoid multicast data superimposition, while the remaining optical carriers go through the dynamic wavelength reflector and simultaneously carry the multicast data. The proposed scheme is experimentally demonstrated with 5-Gb/s downstream unicast, multicast data and 625-Mb/s upstream re-modulated data. © 2009 SPIE-OSA-IEEE.

optical Grid has been thought as a promising technology to support large-scale data-intensive distributed applications. For such a system with so many heterogeneous resources involved, faults seem to be inevitable. A fault in optical Grid may lead to the failure of the application. Therefore, fault-tolerant policies are necessary to improve the performance of optical Grid and satisfy the SLA requirements of the applications. In this paper, we propose several fault-tolerant policies for optical Grid. The performances of different polices are compared by simulation. © 2008 SPIE.

optical grid, the integrated computing environment based on optical network, is expected to be an efficient infrastructure to support advanced data-intensive grid applications. In optical grid, the faults of both computational and network resources are inevitable due to the large scale and high complexity of the system. With the optical network based distributed computing systems extensive applied in the processing of data, the requirement of the application failure probability have been an important indicator of the quality of application and an important aspect the operators consider. This paper will present a task-based analysis method of the application failure probability in optical grid. Then the failure probability of the entire application can be quantified, and the performance of reducing application failure probability in different backup strategies can be compared, so that the different requirements of different clients can be satisfied according to the application failure probability respectively. In optical grid, when the application based DAG (directed acyclic graph) is executed in different backup strategies, the application failure probability and the application complete time is different. This paper will propose new multi-objective differentiated services algorithm (MDSA). New application scheduling algorithm can guarantee the requirement of the failure probability and improve the network resource utilization, realize a compromise between the network operator and the application submission. Then differentiated services can be achieved in optical grid. © 2008 SPIE.

The wavelength-division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) is considered to be a promising method to overlay or upgrade the existing optical access network. A centralized WDM-PON in which the downstream wavelength is reused to modulate the upstream has been studied comprehensively, for same wavelength operation of both downstream and upstream, colorless operation and source-free of optical network units (ONU) can be realized in such systems. We propose a scheme of centralized WDM-PON with non-return-to-zero/continuous-wave (NRZ/CW)polarization multiplexed downstream and remodulated upstream using a CW injection-locked Fabry-Perot (FP) *** scheme can eliminate the crosstalk of downstream data on the upstream and get higher extinction ratio of received downstream signal. Experiment with 22.2km transmission of 10-Gb/s downstream signal and 622-Mb/s upstream signal was realized using a commercial FP laser, with power penalties of 0.2dB and 0dB respectively. 2.5-Gb/s upstream signal using an injection locked FP laser was also investigated, and 61 modes within 25.4nm span were locked with side-mode suppression ratio of above 27dB. © 2008 SPIE.

As a special case of continuous phase frequency-shift-keying (FSK), minimum-shift keying (MSK) exhibits some different properties compared with the traditional optical phase modulation formats, such as return-to-zero (RZ) differential-phase-shift-keying (DPSK) and differential-quadrature-phase-shift- keying (DQPSK). In this paper, we investigated the receiver performance degradation caused by laser frequency offset between laser frequency and delay interferometer (DI) phase, which is found to be the most critical impairment for the receiver performance in a practical optical phase modulated system. Results show that MSK system is about double times and six times more robust to frequency offsets than RZ-DPSK and RZ-DQPSK systems operating at the same 10Gb/s bit rate, respectively. © 2008 SPIE.

As multicast applications become more and more popular, implementing multicast in optical domain has attracted more and more attention due to its more efficient bandwidth usage. The MC-OXC is the key for realizing multicasting at optical layer and directly affects the performance of the multicast services in WDM networks. In this paper, a novel mixed-integrated optical multicast switch for multicast-capable cross-connect is proposed. The new architecture uses power splitters for multicast connections only, allowing unicast sessions to pass without enduring unnecessary power loss. And also the performances of the MC-OXC are analyzed. We performed the cost and cost sensitivity analysis for different MC-OXCs. The results show that the proposed architecture guarantees strictly nonblocking with lower costs. © 2008 SPIE.
