This paper presents a lightweight framework for executing many independent tasks efficiently on grids of heterogeneous computational nodes. It dynamically groups tasks of different granularities and dispatches the groups onto distributed computational resources concurrently. Three strategies have been devised to improve the efficiency of computation and resource utilization. One strategy is to pack up to thousands of tasks into one request. Another is to share the effort in resource discovery and allocation among requests by separating resource allocations from request submissions. The third strategy is to pack variable numbers of tasks into different requests, where the task number is a function of the destination resource's computability. This framework has been implemented in Gracie, a computational grid software platform developed by Peking University, and used for executing bioinformatics tasks. We describe its architecture, evaluate its strategies, and compare its performance with GRAM. Analyzing the experiment results, we found that Gracie outperforms GRAM significantly for execution of sets of small tasks, which is aligned with the intuitive advantage of our approaches built in Gracie.

A survey is made on several traditional topologies of fly-by-light(FBL) network. Based on the comparison of their reliability and real-time performance, a mesh optical switching network topology with 256 nodes is chosen. The redundancy topology gives the ability to sustain 3 link faults, which assures the reliability of network. The seriousness of the network failure can be measured by the number of link faults. And when several link faults occur at the same time, it must also be measured by the contiguity degree among the faults. A simulation is taken to test the end-to-end latency under all network failure situations. The simulation results show that even when some serious fault occurs, the number of hops of the end-to-end route increases slightly. So it still meets the real-time communication requirements.

In the IPTV systems, multicasting will play a crucial role in the delivery of high-quality video services, which can significantly improve bandwidth efficiency. However, the scalab.lity and the signal quality of current IPTV can barely compete with the existing broadcast digital TV systems since it is difficult to implement large-scale multicasting with end-to-end guaranteed quality of service (QoS) in packet-switched IP network. China 3TNet project aimed to build a high performance broadband trial network to support large-scale concurrent streaming media and interactive multimedia services. The innovative idea of 3TNet is that an automatic switched opticalnetworks (ASON) with the capability of dynamic point-to-multipoint (P2MP) connections replaces the conventional IP multicasting network in the transport core, while the edge remains an IP multicasting network. In this paper, a shared sub-path protection mechanism for multi-domain opticalnetworks is proposed. It divides the computed working path into several working sub-paths which span two domains. For each working sub-path, two intra-domain and an inter-domain backup sub-paths are computed to protect intra-domain and inter-domain failures. Simulation results show it has shorter failure recovery time and is resource efficient.
