1wt% multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNTs) reinforced alumina composites was sintered to full density by spark plasma sintering. And pure alumina and graphite/alumina composites were also prepared by the same way for comparison. Indentation and single edge V-notched beam (SEVNB) toughness were measured respectively. The experimental results show that MWNTs could not improve toughness of alumina too much as that once expected. And SEVNB toughness was more valid than indentation toughness.

The effects of different sintering addictives on the preparation of CaF2 transparent ceramics were studied. Transparent CaF2 ceramics were fabricated by vacuum sintering and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) method, using CaF2 nanopowders synthesized by chemical precipitation method as raw materials. The nanopowders and transparent ceramics were studied using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and spectrophotometer. The experimental results indicated that the obtained nanopowders presented normal distribution with grain size about 30 nm; transmittance of CaF2 transparent ceramics was 39% and 26% at 1100 nm for LiF and NaF as sintering addictives, respectively, with corresponding mean grain size 188 μm and 44 μm. Loss of transmission could be attributed to the residual closed porosity. Sintering mechanism was liquid-phase sintering at pre-stage, then solid-phase sintering at later stage, as well as solid solution of lithium ions and sodium ions in the CaF2 lattice structure.

BiOCl/BiOI nanocomposites were synthesized using a thermal impregnation method for the first time. The intense visible-light absorption and large specific surface area gave 4wt.% BiOCl/BiOI nanocomposites the best visible-light photocatalytic properties among all the catalysts for the photodegradation of methyl orange,about 78% after 2 h. But decreased activities were obtained with the increase of Bi OCl content in the nanocomposites. Considering the light absorption,specific surface area and the quantum efficiency, the high recombination of the photoinduced electron-hole pairs of the catalysts that lowed the quantum efficiency was believed to be the critical factor for their decreased photocatalytic activities.

Nanocomposites offer a promising approach to the incorporation of nanostructured constituents into bulk thermo- electric materials. The 0.7-at% Bi-doped Mg2Si nanocomposites are prepared by spark plasma sintering of the mixture of nanoscale and microsized 0.7-at% Bi-doped Mg2Si powders. Microstructure analysis shows that the bulk material is composed of nano- and micrograins. Although the nanograin hinders electrical conduction, the nanocomposite struc- ture is more helpful to reduce thermal conductivity and increase the Seebeck coefficient, hence improving thermoelectric performance. A dimensionless figure of merit of 0.8 is obtained for the 0.7-at% Bi-doped Mg2Si nanocomposite with 50-wt % nanopowder, which is about twice larger than that of the sample without nanopowder.

Mg2Si and Mg2Sn are indirect band gap semiconductors with two low-lying conduction bands (the lower mass and higher mass bands) that have their respective band edges reversed in the two compounds. Consequently, for some composition x, Mg2Si1−xSnx solid solutions must display a convergence in energy of the two conduction bands. Since Mg2Si1−xSnx solid solutions are among the most prospective of the novel thermoelectric materials, we aim on exploring the influence of such a band convergence (valley degeneracy) on the Seebeck coefficient and thermoelectric properties in a series of Mg2Si1−xSnx solid solutions uniformly doped with Sb. Transport measurements carried out from 4 to 800 K reveal a progressively increasing Seebeck coefficient that peaks at x=0.7. At this concentration the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT reaches exceptionally large values of 1.3 near 700 K. Our first principles calculations confirm that at the Sn content x≈0.7 the two conduction bands coincide in energy. We explain the high Seebeck coefficient and ZT values as originating from an enhanced density-of-states effective mass brought about by the increased valley degeneracy as the two conduction bands cross over. We corroborate the increase in the density-of-states effective mass by measurements of the low temperature specific heat. The research suggests that striving to achieve band degeneracy by means of compositional variations is an effective strategy for enhancing the thermoelectric properties of these materials.

In order to get a homogenous mixture and compact of TiB2-Al2O3, hybridization as a surface modification method was used to prepare nano-scale Al2O3 coated TiB2 particles. PE-wax particles were first coated onto TiB2 particles by hybridization, and then the nano-scale Al2O3 particles were coated onto the surface of TiB2 coated by PE-wax particles again. SEM, TEM and EDS were used to characterize the microstructure of as-received core/shell particles and its compacts. The experimental results show that a particle-scale homogenous dispersion of TiB2 and Al2O3 can be formed not only in mixed powder but also in dewaxed compacts. The compacts then were sintered by gas-pressing sintering (GPS). Finial products show improved mechanic properties comparing with reference samples fabricated by normal ways.
