The paper analyses the existed protection of microgrid. And in order to meet the requirements of microgrid protection, a novel protection is presented in this paper. The protection based on local information without the need of communication, uses current traveling waves to identify faulted feeder, and the bus bar voltages to determine a event caused by fault or switch operation. In the protection scheme, current traveling waves are measured by current transducers in N line and phase lines, and wavelet multi-resolution analysis is used to decompose traveling wave signals. The initial traveling waves are compared in magnitude and polarity with each other to determine the faulted feeder. The protection is independent of microgrid operation connected with the main power grid or in island.

Along with the increasing syst.m capacity, large-scaled energy storage syst.ms are supposed to be connected into 10kV or higher networks. Urban network has strict criterions on power quality of the power electronic devices connected. Moreover, the occupancy and noise of industrial frequency transformers also become restraints to the promotion of urban network energy storage. For that reason, this paper proposes a battery energy storage syst.m based on cascaded dc-ac converter, dual active bridges, and a common dc bus. High frequency transformers are used to replace the industrial frequency transformer for insulation, and battery groups are connected to the common dc bus with respective dc-dc interfaces. This multilevel converter syst.m is easy to modularize, easy to extend, and allows different kinds of batteries to work together. The main circuit and proper control syst.m are designed, with the soft-switching condition and current control issues of the dual active bridge analyzed in detail. The simulation results from EMTDC model verify the operation principles and corresponding control strategies. ©2010 IEEE.

According to the characteristics of the cascading failures in power grid, a lot of assessment methods based on the probability theory have been proposed in recent years. However, most of them ignore the influence of the changing operating conditions on the power syst.m planning and operation. This paper assesses the risk of the cascading failure in the power syst.m based on the operational reliability theory which considering the variation of operating states and environment of the power syst.m. The operational reliability of the power syst.m is calculated based on Markov Process which describes the transient probability of states. The key conception of this theory is that the failure rate and the probability of components are changing along with the life of the equipment, the operating states and the environment conditions. A new evaluation procedure is brought up to calculate the operational reliability indices which can provide the specific information of the cascading failure. The evaluating results of the test syst.m confirm that this approach is applicable to analyze the cascading failures in real power syst.m. ©2010 IEEE.

With the rapid development of distributed energy resources (DERs), it is of vital importance to develop a well-designed transmission cost allocation scheme to reflect the contributions of DERs to the power syst.m. In this paper, a usage-based transmission cost allocation scheme is proposed considering the capability of DERs. Based on the different intentions of transmission capacity, the transmission costs can be classified into four fractions: operating, contingency, planning and invalid transmission costs. On operating conditions, the transmission costs are identified and allocated according to the actual usage of consumers at each node. On contingency conditions, the transmission cost allocation will be influenced by the behaviors of DERs since DERs can provide emergent power support to help alleviate transmission congestion. On planning conditions, the transmission costs are useful in the future. The residual costs, i.e., the invalid transmission costs, should not allocated by consumers because this fraction is caused by the over investment of transmission owners. The case studies based on the IEEE 30-bus syst.m validates the effectiveness of the proposed scheme and model. © 2016, Institution of Engineering and Technology. All rights reserved.

In this paper, the reliability of the rolling bearing fault feature extraction based on casing vibration signals is discussed. Through the fault simulation experiment of rolling bearing, the vibration data of the outer ring fault, inner ring fault and rolling element fault, which respectively comes from bearing block measuring point and casing measuring point, is acquired. Then this paper analyzed the data from the time domain, frequency domain and amplitude domain. Analysis results show that, compared to the bearing block measuring points, due to the attenuation of the pulse signal of the fault in the transmission way and the increase of signal to noise on the casing, the fault features of casing vibration signals are significantly weakened. The envelope demodulation, FFT change on the vibration signal of casing directly cannot extract the fault characteristics. However the fault characteristic frequency can be extracted from the appropriate resonance frequency band. The results provide a reference for the fault feature extraction of rolling bearing based on the signal of casing. © 2016, Society for Machinery Failure Prevention Technology. All rights reserved.

This work is concerned with the small signal stability problem in multi-machine syst.ms. By means of H∞ theory, firstly the math model with disturbances is constructed;and secondly, the excitation control law for each generator is designed based on solving Riccati Equation. Finally, simulations performed on 4-machine syst.m shows that the proposed H ∞ method has more advantages over LQR method in both damping ratio and H∞ norm of the corresponding closed-loop syst.m and so can enhance the small signal stability of power syst.m greatly.

Under the skin effect caused by the alternating electromagnetic field, the transmission line parameters changes with frequency, and different line resistivity, surge impedance, wave speed are presented in one line under the different frequency bands of signal. This phenomenon is usually called Frequency transmission characteristic, which is mainly discussed in this paper. This paper first studied the line resistivity, wave speed and surge impedance of zero-mode component and line-mode component in different frequency bands. Then, the line structure and its effection on Frequency transmission characteristic are presented. Last, the frequency transmission characteristic on a certain line fault is discussed based on a typical distribution syst.m model. The research in this paper is meaningful for future study on the fault feeder selection and fault location technology based on traveling wave in the distribution syst.m. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper analyzes the general process of power flow transferring and divides it into four parts: 1) the process of first phase selection after fault occurs;2) the process of selective action at the first time;3) the process of second phase selection and status confirmation;4) the process after status confirmation. It points out that the issue of asymmetrical flow transferring is a critical process which must be put emphasis on. Then it proposes a method to identify this process, and discuss different solution methods. © 2011 IEEE.

Fault locator for power distribution syst.m with neutral non-effectively grounded should locate phase-to-phase fault and single-phase-to-ground fault respectively. For phase-to-phase fault, the point can be located by power-frequency impedance. However, for single-phase-to-ground fault with limited power-frequency current not more than load current, a novel fault location technology should be developed. The paper will present a practical single-phase-to-ground fault location based on fault generated traveling waves acquired from one phase current transducer and zero sequence current transducer at first. Then implementation of the novel fault locator is proposed including hardware design and software flowchart. At last field tests will be made to verify the feasibility of the fault locator. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper studies the fault current frequency spectrum characteristics of single phase ground fault in ungrounded distribution networks, and the fault location method based on it. Firstly, it analyzes the production mechanism of 2nd major frequency component, and the relationship between the 2nd major frequency component and series resonance frequency of the faulted line. Secondly, from the perspectives of lumped-parameter circuit, the relationship between 2nd major frequency component and fault location is deduced. simulation cases are used to confirm the relationship. Last, the impact of load and initial fault phase angle on the 2nd major frequency component are researched. simulation research proves the feasibility of the fault detection and location method based on frequency domain characteristics. © 2011 IEEE.
