Student motivation is one of the most important individual characters for explaining student performance in class. Existing researches show that it can be affected largely by social-contextual factors. Rather than focusing on social relationship, in this paper we construct social activity networks for analyzing the impact of collective behaviors on student motivation. We conduct field experiments to compare social activity networks with relationship networks by analyzing the structural characteristics. We also investigate the dynamic of social activities, and validate the effectiveness of social activity network in reflecting social influence on student motivation. Our results show that social activities are important factors affecting student motivation.

—In today’s cyber-enabled smart grids, high penetration of uncertain renewables, purposeful manipulation of meter readings, and the need for wide-area situational awareness, call for fast, accurate, and robust power system state estimation. The least-absolute-value (LAV) estimator is known for its robustness relative to the weighted least-squares (WLS) one. However, due to nonconvexity and nonsmoothness, existing LAV solvers based on linear programming are typically slow, hence inadequate for real-time system monitoring. This paper develops two novel algorithms for efficient LAV estimation, which draw from recent advances in composite optimization. The first is a deterministic linear proximal scheme that handles a sequence of (5 ∼ 10 in general) convex quadratic problems, each efficiently solvable either via off-the-shelf toolboxes or through the alternating direction method of multipliers. Leveraging the sparse connectivity inherent to power networks, the second scheme is stochastic, and updates only a few entries of the complex voltage state vector per iteration. In particular, when voltage magnitude and (re)active power flow measurements are used only, this number reduces to one or two, regardless of the number of buses in the network. This computational complexity evidently scales well to large-size power systems. Furthermore, by carefully mini-batching the voltage and power flow measurements, accelerated implementation of the stochastic iterations becomes possible. The developed algorithms are numerically evaluated using a variety of benchmark power networks. Simulated tests corroborate that improved robustness can be attained at comparable or markedly reduced computation times for medium- or large-size networks relative to existing alternatives. Sponsored search advertising (SSA) markets have witnessed soaring bid prices from advertisers, which have been considered to be a potential challenge to the long-term stability, profitability and effectiveness of the SSA ecosystem. One approach to addressing this challenge is identifying cooperative and stable bidding strategies for competing advertisers with the objective of reaching socially optimal outcomes in repeated SSA auctions. Although useful in analyzing advertiSers' bidding behavior in single auction sessions, static game-theoretic analysis and simulation studies in the extant SSA literature offer only limited insights for characterizing the long-term evolutionary dynamics and stability of advertisers' bidding behavior. In this paper, we address this problem by applying evolutionary game theory and Coevolutionary simulation. Our key finding is that a group of "nice" and retaliatory (NR) strategies can promote stable cooperation among competing advertisers. Advertisers using NR strategies will never deviate from cooperation first (nice) and always punish their rivals' deviations using competitive bids (retaliatory). The NR strategies are shown to be able to encourage advertisers to decrease their bids to obtain revenue that is equal to that awarded under the Vickrey-Clarke-Groves (VCG) auction mechanism and are further shown to alleviate bid inflation effectively at the system level. Rapidly growing urbanization is putting more pressure on the well-being of citizens and the environment. Applying the latest ICT technology to address urban transport challenges is a key strategy to release the new innovation powerhouse of urbanization. This paper introduces a framework of future Innovative Urban Transport (IUT), to support next generation urban transport, based on IoT, 4G, Big Data, Cloud Computing and other novel ICT technologies. We present the construction of the framework, its reference architecture, and contribution to the environmental and socially important impacts. IUT aims to advance the existing smart city transport, to foster urban innovations that maximize the well-being of citizens while minimizing the negative effects like traffic congestion, air pollution high resource congestion, and traffic accidents. © 2016 IEEE.

Virtual Reality (VR) is a three-dimensional computer-generated virtual world. It is essential to introduced VR technology to education area to develop new teaching mode to improve the efficiency and quality of teaching and learning. Among them, VR classroom has quickly become most dazzling star with its subversive advantage. This paper proposes an overall integration solution of VR classroom, including its composition, its scene design of various disciplines and its main advantage. Finally, a case study of a geography lesson is provided to show its advantages and strong potentiality.

3D display has become increasingly popular in many fields. It can provide incredible immersion compared with 2D display. There are many researches referring to the change of user about no matter subjective experience or objective physiology signal while watching 3D content. Similarly, in this paper, we study the variation of user’s EEG when the user watched 3D content. However, we only focus on parallax cue and avoid other cues of 3D content by using Random Dot Stereogram(RDS) as visual stimulus. We designed an experiment which asked the subject to watch RDS with nine kinds of parallaxes(0,±0.5,±1.1,±1.3,±1.7). The users watched one RDS for 1 minute and then closed eyes and rest for 1 minute every time. During watching, EEG signal with 30-channel was recorded. The result suggests that significant variation of the user’s EEG data occurred in the Alpha (8–13Hz) and Beta(14–30Hz) frequency band by different parallax’s comparison. And we found not only parallax but also electrode position can impact the user’s EEG data significantly. Accurately, the EEG data has a significant change in six electrodes position in both frequency bands including CZ, PZ, OZ, O2 in international 10–20 system. It means those electrode positions we detect can be regarded as typical positions where we record EEG signal. It will simplify the process of EEG signal acquisition when we need to study the relationship between parallax cue of 3D display and the user further.

Internet inquiry is playing an increasingly important role as the complement of the traditional medical service system, especially the similar cases recommendation. It can not only save the patients' waiting time, but also make use of the historical resources, for many cases with the same purpose have been solved perfectly. However, because of the diversity and non-standard of the patients' descriptions, the inquiry platform cannot find the cases with similar semantic easily. Most traditional retrieval methods require the overlap of two sentences, and this is not suitable with the diversity and non-standard descriptions. In this paper, we try to utilize the sentences' semantic representation in a continuous space to understand the cases, and then recommend the similar cases. We also incorporate it into query likelihood language models, trying to get better results. Our experimental data are all collected from a real internet inquiry platform, and the results show that our methods significantly outperform the state-of-the-art translation based methods for similar cases recommendation.

This paper proposes a novel approach to visual tracking of moving objects based on the dynamic coupled conditional random field (DcCRF) model. The principal idea is to integrate a variety of relevant knowledge about object tracking into a unified dynamic probabilistic framework, which is called the DcCRF model in this paper. Under this framework, the proposed approach integrates spatiotemporal contextual information of motion and appearance, as well as the compatibility between the foreground lab.l and object lab.l. An approximate inference algorithm, i.e., loopy belief propagation, is adopted to conduct the inference. Meanwhile, the background model is adaptively updated to deal with gradual background changes. Experimental results show that the proposed approach can accurately track moving objects (with or without occlusions) in monocular video sequences and outperforms some state-of-the-art methods in tracking and segmentation accuracy.

Containment control of Multiagent systems With Dynamic Leaders Based on a PIⁿ-Type Approach

This paper studies the containment control of multiagent systems (MASs) with multiple dynamic leaders in both continuous-time domain and discrete-time domain. The leaders' motions are described by the nth-order polynomial trajectories. This setting makes practical sense because given some critical points, the leaders' trajectories are usually planned by the polynomial interpolations. I-n order to drive all followers into the convex hull spanned by the leaders, a PIn-type containment algorithm is proposed (P and I are short for proportional and integral, respectively;In implies that the algorithm includes up to the nthorder integral terms). It is theoretically proved that the PIn-type containment algorithm is able to solve the containment problem of MASs where the followers are described by any order integral dynamics. Compared to the previous results on the MASs with dynamic leaders, the distinguished features of this paper are that: 1) the containment problem is studied not only in the continuous-time domain but also in the discrete-time domain while most existing results only work in the continuous-time domain;2) to deal with the leaders with the nth-order polynomial trajectories, existing results require the follower's dynamics to be the (n + 1) th-order integral while the followers considered in this paper can be described by any-order integral dynamics;3) the "sign" function is not employed in the proposed algorithm, which avoids the chattering phenomenon;and 4) both disturbance and measurement noise are taken into account. Finally, some simulation examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

In this article, I would like to share my daughter's experience on self-STEAM education. In our daily life, she can always find problems and then dream them with her imagination, finally narrows down her solutions to solve problems in her own way. During these problem-solving processes, I noticed that she went through sciences, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics in a very natural way. So I would like to say, STEAM is the way we learn and grow ever since we were born. But later at school, we are trained in a way that subjects are completely disconnected. It might take time to change this situation at school, but at home, as parents, we need to realize that children can discover new things by themselves even from young ages, and provide rich learning environment for them and let them "STEAM " themselves in their own way.
