The rapid development of vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2X) communications calls for highly spectral efficient communication techniques under time-selective channels. Spatial modulation (SM) facilitates flexible trade-off between spectral and energy efficiency. In this paper, we propose a novel modulation technique based on SM for V2X, which discards the requirement of channel state information (CSI) at the receiver and exhibits enhanced robustness against time-selective fading and Doppler effects. Our proposed scheme tailors differential modulation to SM and is named differential spatial modulation (DSM). Monte Carlo simulations are carried out to demonstrate the advantage of the new scheme in terms of bit error rate (BER) performance for both point-to-point and dual-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying systems in V2X channels.

In this paper, a human robot shared control strategy is developed and tested on a Baxter robot. Using the proposed method, the human operator only needs to consider the motion of the end-effector of the manipulator, while the manipulator will avoid obstacle by itself without sacrificing the end effector motion performance. An improved obstacle avoidance strategy based on the joint space redundancy of the manipulator is designed. A dimension reduction method is presented to solve the over defined problem of avoiding velocity to achieve a more efficient use of the redundancy. By employment of an artificial parallel system of the teleoperate manipulator and the task switching weighting factor, the proposed control method enable the robot restoring back to the commanded pose smoothly when the obstacle is removed. By implementing the dimension reduction method, the trajectory of each joint of the manipulator can be controlled at the same time to achieve the restoring task. Thus, the proposed control method can eliminate the impact of the obstacle on the remaining task. Satisfactory experiment results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Removing water fluctuation via motion field-based kernel regression

A new approach is proposed in this paper to recover the original image of an underwater scene from a given sequence distorted by water fluctuation. The contribution of our method is to use a motion field-based kernel regression to reconstruct an undistorted image. It first utilizes the image registration method to generate registered frames and the corresponding motion fields, and then detect a set of stationary patches from registered frames by calculating the movement energy of local regions. Finally, a temporal kernel regression is carried out to combine the detected stationary patches to reconstruct an undistorted stationary image. Experiments illustrate that this approach can effectively alleviate distortions and significantly improve visual quality of the distorted images. Copyright © 2014 Binary Information Press.

This paper presents a strategy of human-robot collab.ration in grinding system. A collision-avoidance region, which ensures an operator should not be collision with a robot arm, is firstly detected by tracking the operator motion. Then, a path planning method, which uses control points of NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) to modify the path of the robot, is presented. Hence, whenever a possible collision with the robot and operator is predicted, the robot trajectory could be changed accordingly. Finally, a human-robot collab.ration grinding system is built to enable a robot to perform safe grinding operations with the aid of humans.

It has been recognized by many researchers that accurate bus travel time prediction is critical for successful deployment of traffic signal priority (TSP) systems. Although there exist a lot of studies on travel time prediction for Advanced Traveler Information systems (ATIS), this problem for TSP purpose is a little different and the amount of literature is limited. This paper proposes a deep learning based approach for continuous travel time prediction problem. Parameters of the deep network are fine-tuned following a layer-by-layer pre-training procedure on a dataset generated by traffic simulations. Variables that may affect continuous travel time are selected carefully. Experiments are conducted to validate the performance of the proposed model. The results indicate that the proposed model produces prediction with mean absolute error less than 4 seconds, which is accurate enough for TSP operations. This paper also reveals that, except for obvious factors like speed, travel distance and traffic density, the signal time when the prediction is made is also an important factor affecting travel time.

Emotion plays an important role in shaping public policy and business decisions. The growth of social media has allowed people to express their emotion publicly in an unprecedented manner. Textual content and user linkages fostered by social media networks can be used to examine emotion types, intensity, and contagion. However, research into how emotion evolves and entrains in social media that influence security issues is scarce. In this research, we developed an approach to analyzing emotion expressed in political social media. We compared two methods of emotion analysis to identify influential users and to trace their contagion effects on public emotion, and report preliminary findings of analyzing the emotion of 105,304 users who posted 189,012 tweets on the U.S. immigration and border security issues in November 2014. The results provide strong implication for understanding social actions and for collecting social intelligence for security informatics. This research should contribute to helping decision makers and security personnel to use public emotion effectively to develop appropriate strategies. © 2015 IEEE.

Analysis of software licensing mode and compatibility choice with network externality

With network externality, two licensing modes-perpetual licensing mode and Softwareas-a-Service mode, and four compatibility choices-no compatibility, backward compatibility, forward compatibility and backward & forward compatibility, are considered. Consumers' purchasing decision and the vendor's pricing strategy are examined through two-stage models under each combination of licensing mode and compatibility choice. The results show that backward & forward compatibility maximizes the vendor's revenue under perpetual licensing mode, and any of no compatibility, backward compatibility and backward & forward compatibility may maximize the vendor's profit with software development costs under different compatibility choices. Under Software-as-a-Service mode, the compatibility choice has no impact on the vendor's revenue, and no compatibility maximizes the vendor's profit. When revenue maximization is the vendor's concern, perpetual licensing mode is superior to Software-as-a-Service mode;when profit maximization is the vendor's objective, Software-as-a-Service mode usually becomes better than perpetual licensing mode. © 2015, systems Engineering Society of China. The radial basis function network-based autoregressive with exogenous inputs (RBF-ARX) models have much more linear parameters than nonlinear parameters. Taking advantage of this special structure, a variable projection algorithm is proposed to estimate the model parameters more efficiently by eliminating the linear parameters through the orthogonal projection. The proposed method not only substantially reduces the dimension of parameter space of RBF-ARX model but also results in a better-conditioned problem. In this paper, both the full Jacobian matrix of Golub and Pereyra and the Kaufman's simplification are used to test the performance of the algorithm. An example of chaotic time series modeling is presented for the numerical comparison. It clearly demonstrates that the proposed approach is computationally more efficient than the previous structured nonlinear parameter optimization method and the conventional Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm without the parameters separated. Finally, the proposed method is also applied to a simulated nonlinear single-input single-output process, a time-varying nonlinear process and a real multiinput multioutput nonlinear industrial process to illustrate its usefulness.
