We propose a visual tele-AR system, which is a combination of tele-existence and AR techniques. By wearing a video see-through HMD and moving his head, a user in this system is able to tele-operate a remote pan-tilt platform to observe the remote scene. Unlike traditional tele-existence systems which use mechanical or magnetic sensors for tele-operation, we propose a novel tele-operation method based on real-time tracking of master and slave cameras. The master camera is a component of the video see-through HMD mounted in front of user's eyes, while the slave camera is carried by a remote platform. We estimate use's head motion by tracking the master camera in real time, and translate head motions into motion commands to drive the remote pan-tilt platform. Ideally, motion of the remote platform will be exactly the same as user's head. Unfortunately, motion speed of the slave platform is usually limited by their mechanical capability, which may cause pose inconsistence between master and slave cameras, especially when user's head moves fast. We solve this problem by also tracking slave camera in real time, and warping video images according to difference between master and slave camera pose. Since slave camera is tracked, we can integrate virtual objects into remote scene, giving the user an augmented visual sense. To reduce system delay, our implementation is accelerated GPU parallel computation. Experimental results show the efficiency and robustness of our method. © 2012 IEEE.

The extending phenomenon of vegetation community caused by seismic exploration of Shengli Oil Field has been found in the many areas of the Yellow River Delta. The spatial structure of vegetation community is believed to have an influence on the landscape pattern and functions of wetland ecosystem. Numbers, areas, shapes and locations of vegetation community patch are the important parameters for vegetation function and structure researches. In this paper, Vegetation community patches with the different spatial shapes are extracted from SPOT 5 high spatial resolution fusion images using Circular Hough Transform (CHT). The total detection accuracy of the patches is about 89.4%. The experiments show that CHT is simple and effective for detecting vegetation patches from the SPOT 5 high resolution fusion images. © 2012 IEEE.

Utility services provided by cloud computing rely on virtual customer communities forming spontaneously and evolving continuously. Clarifying the explicit boundaries of these communities is thus essential to the quality of utility services in cloud computing. Communities with overlapping features or prominent peripheral vertexes are usually typical irregular communities. Traditional community identification algorithms are limited in discovering irregular topological structures from CR networks, whereas these irregular shapes typically play an important role in finding prominent customers which are ignored in social CRM otherwise. We present a novel method of discovering irregular communities. It firstly finds and merges primitive maximal cliques and the irregular features of overlapping and prominent sparse vertices are further considered. An empirical case and a methodology comparison confirm the feasibility and efficiency of our approach. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

In order to improve the lifetime time model of oil-paper to obtain the more accurate prediction results, the influence of initial moisture contents and temperatures on aging properties of oil-paper was investigated. Firstly, oil-paper samples with four different moisture contents were aged at three temperatures. Degree of Polymerization (DP) of paper was measured as indicator of aging degree. The variation of DP with aging time was studied by introduction of kinetic equation of cellulose degradation accumulation. Secondly, based on the time-temperature superposition (TTSP) method, a time-temperature-moisture superposition (TTSMP) method was proposed to improve the lifetime model. It is indicated that by comparing with previous lifetime model, the merit of the improved one is that not only temperature but also initial moisture content in paper is considered, which is helpful for making more rational estimation of insulation lifetime during long time aging. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper presents a feature extraction algorithm combining S transform (ST) and two-directional two-dimensional principal component analysis ((2D) 2 PCA) for partial discharge (PD) pattern recognition. S transform (ST) is firstly employed to obtain a time-frequency representation of the recorded UHF signals. Then, (2D)2 PCA is applied to compress the ST amplitude(STA) matrices to extract various feature vectors with different (d1, d2) combinations, i.e. (5, 5), (5, 10), (10, 5) and (10, 10). The extracted features are examined by both PSO-SVM classifier and BPNN. Experimental results show that the classification accuracies by PSO-SVM are all higher than that by BPNN under four circumstances of (d1, d2) combinations. The success rates of the PSO-SVM with the four feature vectors are above 94% in all cases. It can be found that the proposed feature extraction and classification algorithm can be effectively applied to PD pattern recognition. © 2012 IEEE.

The extending phenomenon of plant community patches caused by seismic exploration of Shengli Oil Field has been found in the many areas of the Yellow River Delta. Successful management of extensive areas at plant community-level resolution first requires an efficient, cost-effective means of plant community classification and mapping. We evaluated the influence of different spatial resolution data on the accuracy of plant community map created from SPOT 5 satellite imagery of Gudong Oil Field in Yellow River Delta. Plant community patches were detected from SPOT 5 panchromatic band and multispectral bands based on patch shape. Detection accuracy was assessed using the visual interpretation results. Detection results created from SPOT 5 panchromatic band had higher overall accuracy (85.9%) than from multispectral bands (70.5%). Given the same detection method, high resolutions (2.5 m pixels) panchromatic band had potential to provide high detection accuracies, the SPOT 5 panchromatic band and multispectral bands were well-suited for detecting plant community patches in Gudong Oil Field and similar areas of Yellow River Delta. Practical procedures for plant community patch detection and accuracy assessment are presented for use by natural resource and environmental protection managers.

Post-processing algorithm based on total differential method for multi-axis machine tools with arbitrary configuration

Due to existing post-processing algorithm, which is only suitable for a specific type of multi-axis NC machine tool, a generalized method that fits arbitrary configuration is presented. It derives a general kinematic model from multi-body kinematics, and describes the spatial relationship between adjacent CL-data as total differential. The complicated reverse kinematics problem is transformed into solving linear equations. The initial machine control data is solved with the combination of numerical method and total differential method to ensure solving accuracy of subsequent CL-data. In comparison with conventional methods, experiments on a specific machine tool show that the total differential method has attributes of being better generalized, more accurate, and with faster computing speed. © 2012 Journal of Mechanical Engineering.

Composite insulators have been widely used in high voltage transmission lines more than 20 years in China due to their hydrophobic properties, relatively low weight and maintenance costs, and high mechanical strength. Shed configuration is a key factor that influences flashover voltage of composite insulators under icing conditions. In order to study the effect of shed configuration on the flashover performance of composite insulators under icing conditions, the electrical performance of five types of 330-kV composite insulators with different shed designs were compared under artificial icing conditions. Experiments were carried out in the multi-function climate chamber in Chongqing University. In order to explain the influence of shed configuration, electric field and potential distributions along each insulator type were calculated numerically using the finite element method (FEM). The numerical simulation results were found to be in agreement with the lab.ratory experimental ones. © 2012 IEEE.

Wiki, as one of the Web 2.0 technology, has received considerable interest due to its capability to support collab.ratively online contents' creation in a flexible and simple manner. Lots of researchers and practitioners committed themselves to enhancing wiki's capability to support Requirements Engineering (RE). The main goal of this study is to discover all the availab.e tools that use the wiki way or extend the wiki technology to support RE (called as RE-specific wikis), how these RE-specific wikis have been applied, and identify future research directions. We performed a survey through a thorough search for literature and tools that answer our research questions. After data synthesis, we found 12 availab.e RE-specific wikis. And then, we drew out their features, evaluated their RE adaptability. Based on the above findings, we discussed future research directions on how to promote RE-specific wikis to support the collab.rative requirements activities from representation, agreement and specification dimensions.

Training feed-forward neural networks using the gradient descent method with the optimal stepsize

The most widely used algorithm for training multiplayer feedforward networks, Error BackPropagation (EBP), is an iterative gradient descend algorithm by nature. Variable stepsize is the key to fast convergence of BP networks. A new optimal stepsize algorithm is proposed for accelerating the training process. It modifies the objective function to reduce the computational complexity of the Jacobin and consequently that of Hessian matrices, and hereby directly computes the optimal iterative stepsize. The improved backpropagation algorithm helps alleviating the problem of slow convergence and oscillations. The analysis indicates that the backpropagation with optimal stepsize (BPOS) is more efficient when treating large-scale samples. The numerical experiment results on pattern recognition and function approximation problems show that the proposed algorithm possesses the features of fast convergence and less intensive computational complexity. © 2011 by Binary Information Press.
