Performance evaluation is an important issue in Web search engine researches. Traditional evaluation methods rely on much human efforts and are therefore quite time-consuming. With click-through data analysis, we proposed an automatic search engine performance evaluation method. This method generates navigational type query topics and answers automatically based on search users. querying and clicking behavior. Experimental results based on a commercial Chinese search engine's user logs show that the automatically method gets a similar evaluation result with traditional assessor-based ones.

Estimation of distribution algorithms (EDAs) are a class of novel stochastic optimization algorithms, which have recently become a hot topic in field of evolutionary computation. EDAs acquire solutions by statistically learning and sampling the probability distribution of the best individuals of the population at each iteration of the algorithm. EDAs have introduced a new paradigm of evolutionary computation without using conventional evolutionary operators such as crossover and mutation. In such a way, the relationships between the variables involved in the problem domain are explicitly and effectively exploited. According to the complexity of probability models for learning the interdependencies between the variables from the selected individuals, this paper gives a review of EDAs in the order of interactions: dependency-free, bivariate dependencies, and multivariate dependencies, aiming to bring the reader into this novel filed of optimization technology. In addition, the future research directions are discussed.

Quite recently, a few hundreds of semantic concepts are detected automatically with varied performance and subsequently, a new video retrieval paradigm of query-by-concept emerges. In this paper, we consider the problem of exploiting the potential of learned semantics concepts, together with the combination of traditional methods, for automatic and interactive retrieval. We argue that it is important, in both automatic and interactive retrieval scenarios, to find a few relevant concepts to search with, given a multimedia query. For automatic retrieval, we show that both text and image inputs are useful for solving this query-concept-mapping (QUCOM) problem. For interactive retrieval, searching with relevant concepts plus conventional feedback methods is quite effective and is robust to initial search results. Experimental evidence on the search task of TRECVID 2006 shows that by solving QUCOM with a large lexicon of 311 semantic concept detectors, the automatic retrieval performance increases 20% and the interactive retrieval performance has the potential to outperform the state-of-the-art systems.

This paper introduces a new class of switching vector median filter. The proposed algorithm first uses four directional masks to analyze the color difference between the central pixel and its neighborhood pixels in the RGB color space and classify each color pixel into noisy pixel or noise-free one, and then employs the standard vector median filtering operations in the detected noisy locations to restore the corrupted pixels and leave the noise-free ones unchanged. The simulation results show that the proposed method excellently suppresses impulsive noise as well as preserving the image details well, and significantly outperforms the existing vector filtering solutions in terms of both the objective measures and the perceptual visual quality.
