Though both quantity and quality of semantic concept detection in video are continuously improving, it still remains unclear how to exploit these detected concepts as semantic indices in video search, given a specific query. In this paper, we tackle this problem and propose a video search framework which operates like searching text documents. Noteworthy for its adoption of the well-founded text search principles, this framework first selects a few related concepts for a given query, by employing a tf-idf like scheme, called c-tf-idf, to measure the informativeness of the concepts to this query. These selected concepts form a concept subspace. Then search can be conducted in this concept subspace, either by a Vector Model or a Language Model. Further, two algorithms, i.e., Linear Summation and Random Walk through Concept-Link, are explored to combine the concept search results and other baseline search results in a reranking scheme. This framework is both effective and efficient. Using a lexicon of 311 concepts from the LSCOM concept ontology, experiments conducted on the TRECVID 2006 search data set show that: when used solely, search within the concept subspace achieves the state-of-the-art concept search result;when used to rerank the baseline results, it can improve over the top 20 automatic search runs in TRECVID 2006 on average by approx. 20%, on the most significant one by approx. 50%, all within 180 milliseconds on a normal PC. Semantic video indexing is critical for practical video retrieval systems and a generic and scalab.e indexing framework is a must for indexing a large semantic lexicon with over 1000 concepts present. This paper fully explores the idea of incorporating many kinds of diverse features into a single framework, combining them altogether to obtain larger degree of invariance which is absent in any of the component features, and thus achieves genericness and scalab.lity. We scale down the formidable computational expense with a clever design of the classification and fusion schemes. To be specific, ~20 kinds of diverse features are extracted to capture limited yet complementary variance in color, texture and edge with spatial constraints implicitly integrated, and over 100 classifiers are built subsequently and fused to produce a generic detector. The extensive experiments on a total of 310 hours of TRECVID news videos show that the proposed framework yields significantly improved performance over that of the best single feature across a variety of concepts. Moreover, a benchmark comparison demonstrates that this approach is state-of-the-art. Meanwhile, the proposed approach generalizes well over previously unseen programs and stations and scales well to a lexicon of over 300 concepts in the LSCOM [18] ontology. Copyright 2007 ACM.

A new video retrieval paradigm of query-by-concept emerges recently. However, it remains unclear how to exploit the detected concepts in retrieval given a multimedia query. In this paper, we point out that it is important to map the query to a few relevant concepts instead of search with all concepts. In addition, we show that solving this problem through both text and image inputs are effective for search, and it is possible to determine the number of related concepts by a language modeling approach. Experimental evidence is obtained on the automatic search task of TRECVID 2006 using a large lexicon of 311 learned semantic concept detectors. Copyright 2007 ACM.

This paper presents a new query recommendation method that generates recommended query list by mining large-scale user logs. Starting from the user logs of click-through data, we construct a bipartite network where the nodes on one side correspond to unique queries, on the other side to unique URLs, Inspired by the bipartite network based resource allocation method, we try to extract the hidden information from the Query-URL bipartite network. The recommended queries generated by the method are asymmetrical which means two related queries may have different strength to recommend each other. To evaluate the method, we use one week user logs from Chinese search engine Sogou. The method is not only 'content ignorant', but also can be easily implemented in a paralleled manner, which is feasible for commercial search engines to handle large scale user logs.

In image retrieval and annotation, Multi-Instance Learning has been studied actively. Most of the methods solve the MIL problem in a supervised way. In this paper, we proposed two unsupervised frameworks for clustering multi-instance objects based on Expectation Maximization (EM) and iterative heuristic optimization respectively. For each framework, we introduced three new algorithms of finding users' interests on specific web images without any manual lab.led data. And comparative studies have shown the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms. © 2008 IEEE.

Topic distillation aims at finding key resources which are high-quality pages for certain topics. With analysis in non-content features of key resources, a pre-selection method is introduced in topic distillation research. A decision tree is constructed to locate key resource pages using query-independent non-content features including in-degree, document length, URL-type and two new features we found out involving site's self-link structure analysis. Although the result page set contains only about 20% pages of the whole collection, it covers more than 70% of key resources. Furthermore, information retrieval on this page set makes more than 60% improvement with respect to that on all pages. These results were achieved using TREC 2002 web track topic distillation task for training and TREC 2003 corresponding task for testing. It shows an effective way of getting better performance in topic distillation with a dataset significantly smaller in size.1 © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

We report on a study that was undertaken to better identify users' goals behind web search queries by using click through data. Based on user logs which contain over 80 million queries and corresponding click through data, we found that query type identification benefits from click through data analysis;while anchor text information may not be so useful because it is only accessible for a small part (about 16%) of practical user queries. We also proposed two novel features extracted from click through data and a decision tree based classification algorithm for identifying user queries. Our experimental evaluation shows that this algorithm can correctly identify the goals for about 80% web search queries.1 © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Previous researches on switch blocks focused on the analysis of individual switch blocks that contain single length segments. In those switch blocks, segments of different length are separated from each other, which results in low efficiency and low speed. This paper presents a methodology to realize the switching between segments of different length. This methodology considers the design of switch blocks that contains segments of any length. Experimental evaluation will be presented to show the 10% speed improvement that benefit from this methodology, with virtually no impact on area. ©2006 IEEE.

The accuracy of segmenting Chinese character, especially connected Chinese characters, is essential for the performance of a Chinese character recognition system. In this paper, a new approach for segmenting connected Chinese characters based on genetic algorithm is proposed. The best segmentation path is evolved by genetic algorithm from a fixed area located in the middle of character image which is defined as Segmentation Path Zone (SPZ). The initial population is composed of each point line in SPZ. The individual coding, fitness function, crossover operator and mutation operator are also defined for this task. Experimental results on a dataset extracted from the Four Vaults show that our approach can get an average accuracy of 88.9% on test set and can handle some complex types of connected Chinese characters without special heuristic rules. © 2005 IEEE.

Switchgears are the key equipments in the distribution network. Operating switchgear with active Partial Discharge (PD) increases the risk of failure occurring at the time of switching leading to increased risk to the operator. PD in switchgears can be considered to take two forms, surface discharge and internal discharge, if allowed to continue, eventually causes the insulation to break down catastrophically. The electromagnetic pulses produced by PD are in large part conducted away by the surrounding metalwork but a small proportion impinges onto the inner surface of the casing. These charges escape through joints in the metalwork, or a gasket on a gas insulated switch, and pass, as local raised voltages, across the surface of the switch to earth. These pulses of charge were named by Transient Earth Voltages (TEV), and the level of these TEV signals are proportional to the condition of the insulation for switchgear of the same type and model, measured at the same point. So TEV is a very powerful comparative tech.ique for noninvasively checking the condition of switches. In this paper, the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method was employed to simulate the propagation law of TEV in the switchgear. The simulation results show that, the TEV amplitude is proportional to the PD pulse amplitude, increases with PD pulse width decrease and decrease with the distance between detection point and PD source. ©2010 IEEE.
