In analyzing intact rock strength, an important factor is heterogeneity. At the grain-scale, intact crystalline rock consists of a variety of mineral grains of different sizes and shapes. These features give rise to the micro-scale heterogeneity. A three dimensional Grain Based universal distinct element Model (3D-GBM) was developed to generate a deformable polyhedral grain-like structure to simulate the microstructure of brittle intact rock. The geometric heterogeneity is introduced into 3D-GBM by capturing the mineral grain size distribution. A geometric sorting coefficient is used to account for the degree of geometric heterogeneity. A number of rock-like samples are generated using a 3D-GBM realization methodology with different sorting coefficients. The effect of micro-scale geometric heterogeneity on the rock strength is explored by investigating the relationship between micro-scale behaviors and macro-scale responses. Many-core SoC (MCSoC) design is one of chip design trends and challenges. Modeling and simulation for large scale MCSoC design is the key to get it right the first time. NoC is the most important component of future MCSoC. A novel modeling tool, MCVP-NoC (Many-Core Virtual Platform with Networks-on-Chip support) was designed for large scale MCSoC modeling, and can be used in design space exploration, early software development and system verification. MCVP-NoC was built on systemC, OVP(Open Virtual Platform) and TLM2.0, integrated with Orion2.0 for power and area estimation. MCVP-NoC can run real software code, and can be used to evaluate the performance of the MCSoC design under real application load.

Excavator Energy-saving Efficiency Based on Diesel Engine Cylinder Deactivation technology

The hydraulic excavator energy-saving research mainly embodies the following three measures： to improve the performance of diesel engine and hydraulic component, to improve the hydraulic system, and to improve the power matching of diesel-hydraulic system-actuator. Although the above measures have certain energy-saving effect, but because the hydraulic excavator load changes frequently and fluctuates dramatically, so the diesel engine often works in high-speed and light load condition, and the fuel consumption is higher. Therefore, in order to improve the economy of diesel engine in light load, and reduce the fuel consumption of hydraulic excavator, energy management concept is proposed based on diesel engine cylinder deactivation technology. By comparing the universal characteristic under diesel normal and deactivated cylinder condition, the mechanism that fuel consumption can be reduced significantly by adopting cylinder deactivation technology under part of loads condition can be clarified. The simulation models for hydraulic system and diesel engine are established by using AMESim software, and fuel combustion consumption by using cylinder-deactivation-technology is studied through digital simulation approach. In this way, the zone of cylinder deactivation is specified. The testing system for the excavator with this technology is set up based on simulated results, and the results show that the diesel engine can still work at high efficiency with part of loads after adopting this technology; fuel consumption is dropped down to 11% and 13% under economic and heavy-load mode respectively under the condition of driving requirements. The research provides references to the energy-saving study of the hydraulic excavators.

In the multi-projectors display system, color correction is still a primary problem without a perfect solution. The difficulty of color correction mainly comes from three points: intensity transform function (ITF) calibration, intensity balancing and edge blending. In this paper, a synthetic color correction method composed of new algorithms against the three points is proposed. For ITF calibration, an ITF principal component model (IPCM) was constructed via the principal component analysis (PCA) to the ITF sample database (ISD), which was built by measuring lots of projectors. For projector intensity balancing, an algorithm based on wavelet transform was proposed. By introducing the human eye's contrast sensitivity function (CSF) to wavelet transform, the intensity distribution map was filtered to fit human vision. For edge blending, a nonlinear algorithm based on bi-directional trigonometric function (BTF) was proposed. The BTF was defined and the BTF weighted intensity attenuation template was generated for every projector. It is shown in the experiments that the proposed method has advantages in the three difficult points compared with existing methods. © 2012 IEEE.

Topological structure is an important part of the design of network on chip systems. The majority of current NoC architectures employ mesh topology, but at some practical application, NoC systems often integrate a number of heterogeneous blocks, or some fabrication faults, reliability issues, may lead to the need of irregular topologies. Consequently, simplistic routing techniques such as XY scheme can not be employed in irregular topologies. This paper presents an efficient specific routing scheme for the irregular mesh network which can be guaranteed for the connection in irregular topologies. This paper applies routing tables (RT) to realize the algorithm and use OVP (Open Virtual Platforms)+ TLM (Transaction Level Modeling)+systemC to create a virtual platform, achieving a 16 xl6 irregular mesh topology of heterogeneous systems. Finally the routing scheme is applied to test specific real application network instances, and the result shows its connectivity and efficiency.

Wiki, as one of the Web 2.0 technology, has received considerable interest due to its capability to support collab.ratively online contents' creation in a flexible and simple manner. Lots of researchers and practitioners committed themselves to enhancing wiki's capability to support Requirements Engineering (RE). The main goal of this study is to discover all the availab.e tools that use the wiki way or extend the wiki technology to support RE (called as RE-specific wikis), how these RE-specific wikis have been applied, and identify future research directions. We performed a survey through a thorough search for literature and tools that answer our research questions. After data synthesis, we found 12 availab.e RE-specific wikis. And then, we drew out their features, evaluated their RE adaptability. Based on the above findings, we discussed future research directions on how to promote RE-specific wikis to support the collab.rative requirements activities from representation, agreement and specification dimensions. © 2012 IEEE.

Recently biosensors based on silicon nanowire field-effect transistors (SiNW-FETs) have drawn huge amounts of attention, due to their ultrasensitivity, selectivity, lab.l-free and real-time detection abilities. As people know more and more knowledge of the structure and function of nucleic acid molecules, DNA detection has gained importance increasingly. Here, we briefly summarize major fabrication methods in synthesising SiNW-FETs and selectively describe some applications of SiNW-FET biosensors in DNA detection over the past few years. Some key results from each article are summarized, involving the concept and mechanism behind each sensor, with the aim of stimulating more efforts in developing SiNW-FET biosensors for detecting DNA. © 2012 Crown Copyright.

With the development of Internet and cloud computing, multimedia data, such as images and videos, has become one of the most common data types being processed. As the scale of multimedia data being still increasing, it is vitally important to efficiently extract useful information from such a huge amount of multimedia data. However, due to the complexity of the core algorithms, multimedia retrieval applications are not only data intensive but also computationally intensive. Therefore, it has been a major challenge to accelerate the processing speed of such applications to satisfy the real-time requirement. As Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) has entered the general-propose computing domain (GPGPU), it has become one of the most popular accelerators for the applications with real-time requirements. In this paper, we parallelize a widely-used image retrieval algorithm called SURF on GPGPU, which is the core algorithm for many video and image retrieval applications. We first analyze the parallelism within SURF to guarantee that there are sufficient tasks being mapped to the large-scale computation resources in GPGPU. We then exploit some inherent GPGPU characteristics, such as 2D memory, to further boost the performance. Finally, we provide some optimization to the cooperation between CPU and GPGPU, which is generally ignored in previous designs. Experimental results show that our parallelization and optimization achieve a throughput of 340.5 frames/s on a NVIDIA GTX295 GPGPU, which is 15X faster than the maximal optimized CPU version. Compared to CUDA SURF, a state-of-the-art parallelization of SURF on GPGPU, our system achieves a speedup by a factor of 2.3X. © 2012 ACM.

The electrical characteristic test of nanowires is important in nano-materials research. The metal-semiconductor junction that is fabricated with semiconductor nanowire and metal probe in electrical test system has impact on the test result directly, therefore it's necessary to study I-V characteristics of the metal-semiconductor(M-S) junction. Si,ZnO,GaN have been selected from multiple semiconductor materials. When they connected with tungsten probe, all of them formed Schottky barriers, but the relationships between current and voltage of the junctions are distinct. In the thesis, I-V curves of these M-S junctions are compared, and the best electrical performance of M-S junction is selected. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper introduces a design method and a hardware circuit of burglar alarm circuit based on the magnetic field sensor, which can be used to achieve the protection of valuables. The circuit design is ingenious, and has the characteristics of simple structure, light weight, small size, timeliness, high sensitivity and low cost. It has been proved to have a stable and reliable performance by experiment. © 2012 IEEE.
