In this paper, a framework for a real-time wide area controller is established for damping small-signal instability related events in interconnected power systems. Offline designing is performed to design the centralized controller for each inter-area mode of the power system. Residue approach is used to select the most effective stabilizing signals and controller locations. Different constant time delays are taken into controller parameters design. Thus an offline controller database is formed, including different controllers of each mode. The parameters of each controller are different for various ranges of time delay. The damping and other mode information will be identified by online multi-Prony analysis. When an inter-area mode is detected with weak or negative damping, say less than 3%, the corresponding controller for the detected mode will be initiated and deployed for enhancing the damping of the problematic mode. The time delay, which is used to select a suitable set of parameters for a chosen controller, could be calculated online, using the time stamps of the actuator and feedback signal. The paper proposes the framework of the controller with preliminary discussions on the various components of the controller, including: 1) the offline controller database, 2) the online detection of undamped oscillations, and 3) the online corrective control actions at the actuator. The 4-machine 2-area case study results demonstrated the advantage of the proposed method.

Manipulation of gold coated microspheres using electrorotation

The electrorotation of microspheres coated with conductive surface is a novel and important technology for lab.l-free biosensors. Using the electroless plating approach, the polystyrene microspheres with 15 μm and 25 μm in diameters were coated with 50 nm gold layer in thickness. The electrorotation experiments on those gold coated polystyrene microspheres (GCPMs) were carried out. The results showed that they rotated in the opposite direction of the electric field in a low frequency range (100-100 kHz), and the maximum rotation speed was higher than that of uncoated microspheres. Based on the theory of traveling wave electroosmosis(TWEO) and induced charge electroosmosis (ICEO), the electrorotation of GCPMs was quantitively analyzed and confirmed by observing the fluid flow around GCPM. The equations describing the electroration speed of GCPMs were proposed, which are consistent with the experiment results.

Optical quality is the vital concern of injection-molded plastic optical lenses. Focal length is a key quality attribute of a lens to be controlled. A systematic model-free optimization (MFO) method is proposed to control the focal length. Both the gradient-free and gradient-based algorithms are developed. The effectiveness of the MFO method has been demonstrated through experiments. Comparisions with the model-based optimization (MBO) method are also conducted.

There exists an increasing strong demand for internet application in passenger trains, and the wireless broadband coverage along the whole railway is a prerequisite of the internet application in passenger trains. Wireless Mesh Network(WMN) based on 802.16 provides a new solution idea for the wireless broadband coverage of the railway, which is based on OFDM technology to support high-bandwidth data transmission in high-speed mobile environment. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is the key technology of physical layer of WMN which has strong anti-interference ability, high bandwidth utilization and transmission rate. But there are some problems such as synchronization, channel estimation and Peak to Average Power Ratio(PAPR). Among these problems, synchronization is the most important one. For the classic Schmidl&Cox (S&C) timing synchronization algorithm existing plateau which leads to the synchronization inaccuracy, other improved algorithms are proposed to get better performance. However, drawbacks including the narrow synchronization range and the high computational complexity still exist. The optimized scheme mainly contains two aspects, one is amending the structure of the training sequence, and the other is improving the correlation algorithm. Above all, a new method is presented in this paper that optimizes the structure of the training sequence and improves the correlation algorithm to enhance the performance and support the high-speed mobile trains. © 2011 IEEE.

Volume shrinkage risk analysis of salt rock cavern gas storage based on reliability method

Effective volume reduction resulted by cavern shrinkage is one of the common risk types in the operation phase of salt cavern gas storage. Cavern shrinkage risk will lead to damage or collapse of cavern wall rock, even serious accidents. Aimed at the possible cavern shrinkage risk during operation phase of salt cavern gas storage, volumetric shrinkage formula of steady state creep phase is derived on the condition of spherical cavern with constant internal pressure in the limitless and ideal salt rock. Combined with the cavern shrinkage risk classification of salt cavern gas storage, the limit state equation of cavern volume shrinkage is created. On the assumption that every random variable in the limit state equation follows normal distribution, probability of risk occurrence under different levels is calculated using reliability analysis. Then the change regularity of stress-difference between grostress and internal pressure and risk probability of every level is analyzed. Lastly, the elastic deformation, initial creep deformation and accelerated creep deformation are taken into consideration and the calculations result is discussed. The research results can provide theoretical reference for the operation management of salt cavern gas storage.

Based on the gently inclined medium thick phosphate rock at the deep part of the east mining section of Jinning-Six Mine, Yunnan Phosphate Co. Ltd. from open pit mining to underground mining, floor friction model tests under the condition of different slope heights and boundary thicknesses were carried out with a floor friction model instrument. The results show that the deformation and failure response features of the slope can be divided into three stages: fracture and loose in a small range, unstable failure in a local range, and instability failure in the whole range of slope rock sliding to the goaf. The main deformation and failure modes of the slope are tension cracking, breakage, and sliding failure. When the slope height is fixed, with the boundary thickness gradually decreasing from 30 m to 20 m and 10 m, the stability of the slope is directly proportional to the boundary thickness, and the reasonable boundary thickness is 20 m to 30 m. When the boundary thickness is fixed, with the slope height increasing from 60 m to 108 m, the stability of the slope is inversely proportional to the slope height, and the slope of 108 m from open pit mining to underground mining is unstable.

Under the skin effect caused by the alternating electromagnetic field, the transmission line parameters changes with frequency, and different line resistivity, surge impedance, wave speed are presented in one line under the different frequency bands of signal. This phenomenon is usually called Frequency transmission characteristic, which is mainly discussed in this paper. This paper first studied the line resistivity, wave speed and surge impedance of zero-mode component and line-mode component in different frequency bands. Then, the line structure and its effection on Frequency transmission characteristic are presented. Last, the frequency transmission characteristic on a certain line fault is discussed based on a typical distribution system model. The research in this paper is meaningful for future study on the fault feeder selection and fault location technology based on traveling wave in the distribution system. © 2011 IEEE.

Impedance method and single terminal travelling wave method are analyzed in paper, applicable scope of optimized solution is presented. Impedance method is of high robustness but low accuracy. Single terminal travelling wave method offers high accuracy but poor robustness. Optimized solution combines these two methods together, takes advantages of both methods. It is a great enhancement to single terminal fault location. This paper analyzed theoretical basis of optimized solution, proposed the calculation algorithm of fault location range using impedance method. Analyses of impedance method and single terminal travelling wave method show that the optimized solution is suitable for engineering application. Error analysis is proved correct by simulation. © 2011 IEEE.

Estimating low-frequency oscillation modes and the corresponding mode shapes based on ambient data from WAMS measurements has a promising prospect of application in power system analysis and control. The present approaches estimate the modes and mode shapes respectively, which greatly reduce the computational efficiency. Besides, there is no good solution for the problem of discriminating real modes from the spurious ones caused by numerical error. A method based on stochastic subspace method was proposed in this paper. By choosing the angle measurements of all buses as input signals for the method, the modes and simultaneously the corresponding mode shapes of any bus can be estimated conveniently. By introducing the idea of reference channels, the computation complexity was substantially reduced without decreasing the accuracy. Stabilization diagrams technique was introduced to discriminate the real modes from the spurious ones. The test case based on the IEEE-118 system indicated that the method proposed is satisfying in respect of both computational efficiency and accuracy of results. © 2011 IEEE.
