We propose a novel surface-aware ray tracing method based on implicit model representation. Each horizon is represented by a signed distance field and the spatial relationships between horizons are described by a stratigraphic binary tree. With this kind of implicit representation, complex structural model (e.g., heavily faulted, intrusions and unconformities) are easily handled, and the velocity discontinuities across interfaces can be represented accurately. Moreover, the ray-intersection with the interfaces can be accomplished very efficiently because only finite number of local computations is involved. The proposed method has many potential applications such as ray-based seismic modeling, ray-based seismic migration and tomographic migration velocity analysis, etc. © 2012 SEG.

Satellite data products derived from the remote sensing observations describe features of the land, ocean and atmosphere. And by data processing, they can be used to study processes and trends on local/global scale for real-time environmental research and applications. However, the advances of cutting-edge remote sensing technology bring the challenge of data deluge for satellite data analysis and interpretation. With combinations of human intelligence and machine intelligence, we develop a satellite data portal for crowdsourcing data analysis and interpretation through teaching and learning to cope with the overwhelming data deluge. Compared with all the existing data portals and crowdsourcing systems, it is the first attempt to embed crowdsourcing into a data portal to provide integrated services of satellite data access and analysis.

Delta debugging has been proposed for failure-inducing changes identification. Despite promising results, there are two practical factors that thwart the application of delta debugging: large number of tests and misleading false positives. To address the issues, we present a combination of coverage analysis and delta debugging that automatically isolates failure-inducing changes. Evaluations on twelve real regressions in GNU software demonstrate both the speed gain and effectiveness improvements.

software debugging starts with bug reports. Test engineers confirm bugs and determine the corresponding developers to fix them. However, the analysis of bug reports is time-consuming and manual inspection is difficult and tedious. To improve the efficiency of the whole process, we propose a bug processing framework that integrates bug report analysis and fault localization. An instance of the framework is implemented for regression faults. Preliminary results on a large open source application demonstrate both efficiency and effectiveness.

Script-based automated regression testing is widely used in industry. In this work, we focus on failed tests in a real regression test project. The causes of 197 failed tests produced in automated testing are examined and categorized based on an analysis procedure presented. The result shows that incorrect scripts, oracle mismatches, test tool bugs and misconfigurations involved in testing contribute most to failures instead of product bugs. Detecting and fixing the false positives are laborious and time-consuming. Our empirical study demonstrates that the benefits of test automation are obliterated to some extent in practical settings. To improve the effectiveness of automated regression testing further, some issues should receive more attention.

In order to reduce cost and improve efficiency, many data centers adopt virtualization solutions. The advent of virtualization allows multiple virtual machines hosted on a single physical server. However, this poses new challenges for resource management. Web workloads which are dominant in data centers are known to vary dynamically with time. In order to meet application's service level agreement (SLA), how to allocate resources for virtual machines has become an important challenge in virtualized server environments, especially when dealing with fluctuating workloads and complex server applications. User experience is an important manifestation of SLA and attracts more attention. In this paper, the SLA is defined by server-side response time. Traditional resource allocation based on resource utilization has some drawbacks. We argue that dynamic resource allocation directly based on real-time user experience is more reasonable and also has practical significance. To address the problem, we propose a system architecture that combines response time measurements and analysis of user experience for resource allocation. An optimization model is introduced to dynamically allocate the resources among virtual machines. When resources are insufficient, we provide service differentiation and firstly guarantee resource requirements of applications that have higher priorities. We evaluate our proposal using TPC-W and Webbench. The experimental results show that our system can judiciously allocate system resources. The system helps stabilize applications' user experience. It can reduce the mean deviation of user experience from desired targets. Copyright © 2012 The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers.

Foreground detection is an important and challenging task in the traffic surveillance applications, especially at urban intersections. A very common solution for foreground detection with static cameras is background subtraction. When the background is modeled, learning rate is an important parameter and is difficult to select. Difficulties of background updating usually come from complex physical scenarios such as sudden illumination changes and occlusion. Conventional background modeling algorithms usually use the same learning rate for the entire frame or sequence and are not able to match the environment changes adaptively. Although some improvements with adaptive learning rate have been achieved, they are still not appropriate for complex traffic intersection scene. This paper addresses the problem of background subtraction at busy intersection and proposes a new method for vision-based foreground detection. It assigns a learning rate adaptively for each pixel according to the information collected by the infrastructure-based networked system, also called a Cyber-Physical System (CPS). Our goal is to provide a simple and efficient solution to improve the robustness and accuracy of intersection foreground detection. We test our approach in urban traffic intersection and the experimental results show that the new method has a promising future.

Asia Modelling Symposium 2012 (AMS2012), the sixth Asia international conference on mathematical modelling and computer simulation, received submissions from over 20 countries. The conference program committee had a very challenging task of choosing high quality submissions. Each paper was peer reviewed by several independent referees of the program committee and, based on the recommendation of the reviewers, 43 papers were finally accepted. The papers offer stimulating insights into emerging modelling and simulation techniques for intelligent and hybrid intelligent systems and systems that employ intelligent methodologies.
