Nonlinear Prediction with Deep Recurrent Neural networks for Non-Blind Audio Bandwidth Extension

Non-blind audio bandwidth extension is a standard technique within contemporary audio codecs to efficiently code audio signals at low bitrates. In existing methods, in most cases high frequencies signal is usually generated by a duplication of the corresponding low frequencies and some parameters of high frequencies. However, the perception quality of coding will significantly degrade if the correlation between high frequencies and low frequencies becomes weak. In this paper, we quantitatively analyse the correlation via computing mutual information value. The analysis results show the correlation also exists in low frequency signal of the context dependent frames besides the current frame. In order to improve the perception quality of coding, we propose a novel method of high frequency coarse spectrum generation to improve the conventional replication method. In the proposed method, the coarse high frequency spectrums are generated by a nonlinear mapping model using deep recurrent neural network. The experiments confirm that the proposed method shows better performance than the reference methods.

Since the existing works in data stream anomaly detection mainly locate abnormal objects from data sequences instead of detecting the abnormal state of a monitored object in real-time. And they need a set of empirical predefined thresholds, which may affect the flexibility of the detection models. These limitations make the existing solutions no longer suitable for the real-time detection of the changes in the status of the monitored object. In this paper, we propose a new Abnormal conditions Detection approach (ADCMO) on the Continuously Monitored Object. ADCMO incorporates the data distribution property to carry out the anomaly quantification for the data in the data stream, and then the abnormal conditions of the monitored object are quantified by the anomaly information of the current data and historical data. Finally, the anomaly state is adaptively determined by the distribution of anomaly coefficients. ADCMO can detect the changes in the status by calculating the outlier coefficient of the object at each moment and adaptively make the abnormal early warning. The experiments show that ADCMO can do this any-time, dynamically, efficiently and effectively.

How to fast and accurately assess the severity level of COVID-19 is an essential problem, when millions of people are suffering from the pandemic around the world. Currently, the chest CT is regarded as a popular and informative imaging tool for COVID-19 diagnosis. However, we observe that there are two issues - weak annotation and insufficient data that may obstruct automatic COVID-19 severity assessment with CT images. To address these challenges, we propose a novel three-component method, i.e., 1) a deep multiple instance learning component with instance-level attention to jointly classify the bag and also weigh the instances, 2) a bag-level data augmentation component to generate virtual bags by reorganizing high confidential instances, and 3) a self-supervised pretext component to aid the learning process. We have systematically evaluated our method on the CT images of 229 COVID-19 cases, including 50 severe and 179 non-severe cases. Our method could obtain an average accuracy of 95.8%, with 93.6% sensitivity and 96.4% specificity, which outperformed previous works. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Bi-directional mission offloading for agile space-air-ground integrated networks

Space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGIN) provide great strengths in extending the capability of ground wireless networks. On the other hand, with rich spectrum and computing resources, the ground networks can also assist space-air networks to accomplish resource-intensive or power-hungry missions, enhancing the capability and sustainability of the space-air networks. Therefore, bi-directional mission offloading can make full use of the advantages of SAGIN and benefits both space-air and ground networks. In this article, we identify the key role of network reconfiguration in coordinating heterogeneous resources in SAGIN, and study how network function virtualization (NFV) and service function chaining (SFC) enable agile mission offloading. A case study validates the performance gain brought by bi-directional mission offloading. Future research issues are outlooked as the bi-directional mission offloading framework opens a new trail in releasing the full potentials of SAGIN. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. Developer Role Evolution in Open Source software Ecosystem： An Explanatory Study on GNOME

An open source software （OSS） ecosystem refers to an OSS development community composed of many software projects and developers contributing to these projects. The projects and developers co-evolve in an ecosystem. To keep healthy evolution of such OSS ecosystems, there is a need of attracting and retaining developers, particularly project leaders and core developers who have major impact on the project and the whole team. Therefore, it is important to figure out the factors that influence developers＇ chance to evolve into project leaders and core developers. To identify such factors, we conducted a case study on the GNOME ecosystem. First, we collected indicators reflecting developers＇ subjective willingness to contribute to the project and the project environment that they stay in. Second, we calculated such indicators based on the GNOME dataset. Then, we fitted logistic regression models by taking as independent variables the resulting indicators after eliminating the most collinear ones, and taking as a dependent variable the future developer role （the core developer or project leader）. The results showed that part of such indicators （e.g., the total number of projects that a developer joined） of subjective willingness and project environment significantly influenced the developers＇ chance to evolve into core developers and project leaders. With different validation methods, our obtained model performs well on predicting developmental core developers, resulting in stable prediction performance （0.770, F-value）.

Differential function analysis: identifying structure and activation variations in dysregulated pathways

complex diseases are generally caused by the dysregulation of biological functions rather than individual molecules. Hence, a major challenge of the systematical study on complex diseases is how to capture the differentially regulated biological functions, e.g., pathways. The traditional differential expression analysis(DEA) usually considers the changed expression values of genes rather than functions. Meanwhile, the conventional function-based analysis(e.g., PEA: pathway enrichment analysis) mainly considers the varying activation of functions but disregards the structure change of genetic elements of functions. To achieve precision medicine against complex diseases, it is necessary to distinguish both the changes of functions and their elements from heterogeneous dysregulated pathways during the disease development and progression. In this work, in contrast to the traditional DEA, we developed a new computational framework, namely differential function analysis(DFA), to identify the changes of element-structure and expression-activation of biological functions, based on comparative non-negative matrix factorization(cN MF). To validate the effectiveness of our method, we tested DFA on various datasets, which shows that DFA is able to effectively recover the differential element-structure and differential activation-score of pre-set functional groups. In particular, the analysis of DFA on human gastric cancer dataset, not only capture the changed network-structure of pathways associated with gastric cancer, but also detect the differential activations of these pathways(i.e., significantly discriminating normal samples and disease samples), which is more effective than the state-of-the-art methods, such as GSVA and Pathifier. Object-based audio coding is the main technique of audio scene coding. It can effectively reconstruct each object trajectory, besides provide sufficient flexibility for personalized audio scene reconstruction. So more and more attentions have been paid to the object-based audio coding. However, existing object-based techniques have poor sound quality because of low parameter frequency domain resolution. In order to achieve high quality audio object coding, we propose a new coding framework with introducing the non-negative matrix factorization(NMF) method. We extract object parameters with high resolution to improve sound quality, and apply NMF method to parameter coding to reduce the high bitrate caused by high resolution. And the experimental results have shown that the proposed framework can improve the coding quality by 25%, so it can provide a better solution to encode audio scene in a more flexible and higher quality way.

Information-Centric networking (ICN) aims to distribute and retrieve the content by name. In this paper, we review and approve the feasible Ant Colony Optimization (ACO)-inspired ICN routing solutions, i.e., applying ACO to solve ICN routing problem. At first, some significant challenges with respect to ICN routing are analyzed, such as explosive increasing of Forwarding Information Base (FIB), retrieval of closest content copy, uniform distribution of content and mobility support. Then, the solutions inspired by biology feature and behavior is reviewed. In addition, a general design thought of ACO-inspired solution is presented. Finally, the feasibility of ACO-inspired ICN routing solution is evaluated. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

Angle closure glaucoma (ACG) is a more aggressive disease than open-angle glaucoma, where the abnormal anatomical structures of the anterior chamber angle (ACA) may cause an elevated intraocular pressure and gradually leads to glaucomatous optic neuropathy and eventually to visual impairment and blindness. Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography (AS-OCT) imaging provides a fast and contactless way to discriminate angle closure from open angle. Although many medical image analysis algorithms have been developed for glaucoma diagnosis, only a few studies have focused on AS-OCT imaging. In particular, there is no public AS-OCT dataset available for evaluating the existing methods in a uniform way, which limits the progress in the development of automated techniques for angle closure detection and assessment. To address this, we organized the Angle closure Glaucoma Evaluation challenge (AGE), held in conjunction with MICCAI 2019. The AGE challenge consisted of two tasks: scleral spur localization and angle closure classification. For this challenge, we released a large data of 4800 annotated AS-OCT images from 199 patients, and also proposed an evaluation framework to benchmark and compare different models. During the AGE challenge, over 200 teams registered online, and more than 1100 results were submitted for online evaluation. Finally, eight teams participated in the onsite challenge. In this paper, we summarize these eight onsite challenge methods and analyze their corresponding results in the two tasks. We further discuss limitations and future directions. In the AGE challenge, the top-performing approach had an average Euclidean Distance of 10 pixel (10µm) in scleral spur localization, while in the task of angle closure classification, all the algorithms achieved the satisfactory performances, especially, 100% accuracy rate for top-two performances.
