Blind image quality assessment (BIQA) aims to predict perceptual image quality scores without access to reference images. state-of-the-art BIQA methods typically require subjects to score a large number of images to train a robust model. However, subjective quality scores are imprecise, biased, and inconsistent, and it is challenging to obtain a large-scale database, or to extend existing databases, because of the inconvenience of collecting images, training the subjects, conducting subjective experiments, and realigning human quality evaluations. To combat these limitations, this paper explores and exploits preference image pairs (PIPs) such as the quality of image Iais better than that of image Ibfor training a robust BIQA model. The preference label, representing the relative quality of two images, is generally precise and consistent, and is not sensitive to image content, distortion type, or subject identity;such PIPs can be generated at a very low cost. The proposed BIQA method is one of learning to rank. We first formulate the problem of learning the mapping from the image features to the preference label as one of classification. In particular, we investigate the utilization of a multiple kernel learning algorithm based on group lasso to provide a solution. A simple but effective strategy to estimate perceptual image quality scores is then presented. Experiments show that the proposed BIQA method is highly effective and achieves a performance comparable with that of state-of-the-art BIQA algorithms. Moreover, the proposed method can be easily extended to new distortion categories. © 2012 IEEE.

The advent of single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) has facilitated the acquisition of high-resolution data regarding cell heterogeneity across various tissues. A fundamental and critical step in the analysis of scRNA-seq data is cell type identification. An appropriate graph construction strategy can reflect the topological structure between cells and allows for detailed exploration of the relationships between cells and genes. Given the sparsity of scRNA-seq data and the pronounced noise generated by shallow sequencing, choosing an appropriate graph construction strategy has become a significant challenge. In this paper, we propose a single-cell clustering method, named Sc-PNNMF, based on structural perturbation of nonnegative matrix factorization. Sc-PNNMF employs a structural perturbation algorithm to optimize the gene expression matrix. The optimized matrix guides the matrix factorization process, effectively overcoming the impact of data sparsity and significant noise in gene expression data on the graph construction strategy. We compared the clustering abilities of Sc-PNNMF with five other methods on ten real datasets. © 2024 IEEE.

Cell-Free Massive MIMO-OFDM for High-Speed Train Communications

Cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems show great potentials in low-mobility scenarios, due to cell boundary disappearance and strong macro diversity. However, the great Doppler frequency offset (DFO) leads to serious inter-carrier interference in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technology, which makes it difficult to provide high-quality transmissions for both high-speed train (HST) operation control systems and passengers. In this paper, we focus on the performance of CF massive MIMO-OFDM systems with both fully centralized and local minimum mean square error (MMSE) combining in HST communications. Considering the local maximum ratio (MR) combining, the large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) cooperation and the practical effect of DFO on system performance, exact closed-form expressions for uplink spectral efficiency (SE) expressions are derived. We observe that cooperative MMSE combining achieves better SE performance than uncooperative MR combining. In addition, HST communications with small cell and cellular massive MIMO-OFDM systems are compared in terms of SE. Numerical results reveal that the CF massive MIMO-OFDM system achieves a larger and more uniform SE than the other systems. Finally, the train antenna centric (TA-centric) CF massive MIMO-OFDM system is designed for practical implementation in HST communications, and three power control schemes are adopted to optimize the propagation of TAs for reducing the impact of the DFO. Phthalate acid esters (PAEs), known food contaminants, can lead to reproductive problems, respiratory diseases, childhood obesity, and neuropsychological disorders. This work aims to develop an electrochemical aptamer sensor for the detection of DAP and its analogs. To achieve specific recognition ability for PAEs, We have introduced the thymidine-Hg2+-thymidine strategy for the first time in an electrochemical aptamer sensor, incorporating metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as the carrier for the aptamer. Additionally, nanoamplification technology was applied by immobilizing MXene on the electrode to intensify the sensor's current signal. In the presence of PAEs, these molecules specifically bound to the aptamers, resulting in competitive release of Hg2+ and aptamers connected to Hg2+, subsequently reducing current signaling. Under optimal experimental conditions, the designed sensor achieved a linear range from 1.65×10-5 mg/mL to 3×10-2 mg/ml and an extremely low detection limit of 8.94×10-6 mg/mL. Furthermore, it exhibited good reliability and practicality in detecting actual samples. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Most existing one-shot skeleton-based action recognition focuses on raw low-level information (e.g., joint location), and may suffer from local information loss and low generalization ability. To alleviate these, we propose to leverage text description generated from large language models (LLM) that contain high-level human knowledge, to guide feature learning, in a global-local-global way. Particularly, during training, we design 2 prompts to gain global and local text descriptions of each action from an LLM. We first utilize the global text description to guide the skeleton encoder focus on informative joints (i.e.,global-tolocal). Then we build non-local interaction between local text and joint features, to form the final global representation (i.e., local-to-global). To mitigate the asymmetry issue between the training and inference phases, we further design a dual-branch architecture that allows the model to perform novel class inference without any text input, also making the additional inference cost neglectable compared with the base skeleton encoder. Extensive experiments on three different benchmarks show that CrossGLG consistently outperforms the existing SOTA methods with large margins, and the inference cost (model size) is only 2.8% than the previous SOTA. CrossGLG can also serve as a plug-and-play module that can substantially enhance the performance of different SOTA skeleton encoders with a neglectable cost during inference. The cooperative behaviors of players on weighted networks are investigated by incorporation of trust mechanisms into a well-accepted game model, i.e., the networked prisoner’s dilemma game, afterwards some weight-updating schemes are designed according to the credit records. Despite the differences in network topologies and strategy updating protocols, a simple yet significant principle surfaces that, to promote the emergence of cooperation over abundant weighted networks, only the latest credit record of partners is required to be taken into consideration, whereas incorporating more previous records may even deteriorate the cooperation performance. To support such an appealing principle, we have investigated more deeply into the role of credit records so as to give a detailed explanation underlying it. The virtue of this work lies in providing insights into the effective usage of the currently available credit records.

In this paper, global bounded consensus problem of general nonidentical networks with nonlinear dynamics and distributed time-delays is investigated, in which the distributed time-delays are distinct from each other. The global consensus exists in the sense of boundedness since complete consensus does not often exist in the nonidentical case. With the aid of constructing a Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and utilizing the technique of integral partitioning, some sufficient delay-dependent conditions are derived to ensure that global bounded consensus is achieved ultimately. Finally, effectiveness of the theoretical result is illustrated by a numerical example.

Boosting discriminative model for moving cast shadow detection

Moving cast shadow causes serious problem while segmenting and extracting foreground from image sequences, due to the misclassification of moving shadow as foreground. This paper proposes a Boosting discriminative model to eliminate cast shadow on Discriminative Random Fields (DRFs). The method combines different features for Boosting to discriminate cast shadow from moving objects, then temporal and spatial coherence of shadow and foreground are incorporated on Discriminative Random Fields and the problem can be solved by graph cut. Firstly, moving objects are obtained by background subtraction;secondly, shadow candidates can be derived through pre-processing moving objects, in terms of the shadow physical property;thirdly, color information and texture information is derived by comparing shadow and foreground points in current image with corresponding points in background image, which are selected as features for Boosting;finally, temporal and spatial coherence of shadow and foreground is employed on Discriminative Random Fields and discriminate shadow and foreground by graph cut accurately.

Since the DC-coupled interface between the driver and the laser diode makes it impossible for the conventional drivers to work with low power supply, an output stage has been proposed. A novel APC can suppress the output average optical power and extinction ratio within ±0.3 dBm and ±0.4 dB(-40°C to 100°C), respectively. The initialization time is not more than 0.6 μs because the fast binary search algorithm is incorporated into the APC. The burst-on delay and burst-off delay are less than 5 ns and meet the requirement of PON system. The chip is fabricated in TSMC 0.8 μm BiCMOS process and occupies an area of 1.56 mm × 1.67 mm with a power consumption of 105 mW.

A polynomial chaos approach to robust H∞ static output-feedback control with bounded truncation error

This article considers the H∞ static output-feedback control for linear time-invariant uncertain systems with polynomial dependence on probabilistic time-invariant parametric uncertainties. By applying polynomial chaos theory, the control synthesis problem is solved using a high-dimensional expanded system which characterizes stochastic state uncertainty propagation. A closed-loop polynomial chaos transformation is proposed to derive the closed-loop expanded system. The approach explicitly accounts for the closed-loop dynamics and preserves the L2-induced gain, which results in smaller transformation errors compared to existing polynomial chaos transformations. The effect of using finite-degree polynomial chaos expansions is first captured by a norm-bounded linear differential inclusion, and then addressed by formulating a robust polynomial chaos based control synthesis problem. This proposed approach avoids the use of high-degree polynomial chaos expansions to alleviate the destabilizing effect of truncation errors, which significantly reduces computational complexity. In addition, some analysis is given for the condition under which the robustly stabilized expanded system implies the robust stability of the original system.
