Deep learning has significantly advanced the audio classification, achieving remarkable results. However, these successes often rely on extensive manual annotation of audio, a labor-intensive and costly process. Active Learning (AL) presents a promising solution by minimizing the required amount of annotation through the iterative selection of the most informative audio samples. Current AL methods for audio classification typically depend solely on the latest model checkpoint, overlooking the dynamics of the entire training process. The Complementary Learning Systems (CLS) theory posits that the interplay between short-term and long-term memory systems can effectively measure sample uncertainty, offering a means to capture training dynamics. In this work, we introduce a novel AL framework for audio classification, termed CLS-AL, which addresses the limitations of existing methods by simultaneously maintaining both short-term and long-term memory models. This dual-memory approach allows for a more comprehensive consideration of training dynamics. The divergence in predictions between these memory models provides a new metric for evaluating the uncertainty of unlabeled samples, enhancing the effectiveness of the AL sample selection process. We demonstrate the effectiveness and generalizability of CLS-AL through extensive experiments on a diverse set of audio datasets, showing that CLS-AL obviously outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods. © 2025 IEEE.

Evaluating Logical Expressions by Membrane Systems

Boolean and relational operations, which are defined for solving mathematically logical problems, are always required in computing models. Membrane computing is a kind of distributed parallel computing model. In this paper, we design different membranes for implementing primary Boolean and relational operations respectively. And based on these membranes, a membrane system can be constructed by a present algorithm for evaluating a logical expression. Some examples are given to illustrate how to perform the Boolean, relational operations and evaluate the logical expression correctly in these membrane systems.

Arithmetic operations and expression evaluations are fundamental in computing models. This paper firstly designs arithmetic membranes without priority rules for basic arithmetic operations, and then proposes an algorithm to construct expression P systems based on several of such membranes after designing synchronous and asynchronous transmission strategies among the membranes. For any arithmetic expression, an expression P system can be built to evaluate it effectively. Finally, we discuss different parallelism strategies through which different expression P systems can be built for an arithmetic expression.

Semantic Communication (SC) has emerged as a novel communication paradigm in recent years. Nevertheless, extant Image Semantic Communication (ISC) systems face several challenges in dynamic environments, including low information density, catastrophic forgetting, and uncertain Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). To address these challenges, we propose a novel Vision-Language Model-based Cross-modal Semantic Communication (VLM-CSC) system. The VLM-CSC comprises three novel components: (1) Cross-modal Knowledge Base (CKB) is used to extract high-density textual semantics from the semantically sparse image at the transmitter and reconstruct the original image based on textual semantics at the receiver. The transmission of high-density semantics contributes to alleviating bandwidth pressure. (2) Memory-assisted Encoder and Decoder (MED) employ a hybrid long/short-term memory mechanism, enabling the semantic encoder and decoder to overcome catastrophic forgetting in dynamic environments when there is a drift in the distribution of semantic features. (3) Noise Attention Module (NAM) employs attention mechanisms to adaptively adjust the semantic coding and the channel coding based on SNR, ensuring the robustness of the CSC system. The experimental simulations validate the effectiveness, adaptability, and robustness of the CSC system. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Probabilistic-Search and Neighbor-Density Based Doppler-Shift Acquisition in Space Communications

In space communications, the signal's long-distance transmission between a flying transmitter-receiver pair encounters two obstacles: a huge path-loss and a high-speed movement. The huge path-loss results in a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the high-speed movement brings a dynamic Doppler-shift, thus posing a great challenge for Doppler-shift acquisition. Under the low SNR, the Doppler-shift acquisition has to accumulate many symbols in a long-time period. However, during this period, the dynamic Doppler-shift disperses all these symbols' total energy over a wide range, thus causing the energy dispersion problem. To address this problem, we propose a probabilistic-search and neighbor-density (PSND) scheme, where the probabilistic-search considers the element's amplitude and sacrifices some redundant signal elements for a narrower search-range, while the neighbordensity sums the signal element's all neighbors for a larger signal energy. The PSND scheme includes two algorithms: the Generic PSND and Iterative PSND. The Generic PSND algorithm first selects some search-elements with their probabilities to construct a probabilistic-search-range, then selects some density-elements with their neighbor-elements to derive the neighbor-densities, and finally searches the largest neighbor-density to obtain the acquisition result. Built upon the Generic PSND algorithm above, the Iterative PSND algorithm iteratively updates the searchelements to further strengthen the neighbor-density in a narrower probabilistic-search-range. Moreover, the simulations results have demonstrated our PSND scheme's higher acquisition probability, as compared with the existing schemes. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

SIMAC: A Semantic-Driven Integrated Multimodal Sensing And Communication Framework

Traditional single-modality sensing faces limitations in accuracy and capability, and its decoupled implementation with communication systems increases latency in bandwidth-constrained environments. Additionally, single-task-oriented sensing systems fail to address users’ diverse demands. To overcome these challenges, we propose a semantic-driven integrated multimodal sensing and communication (SIMAC) framework. This framework leverages a joint source-channel coding architecture to achieve simultaneous sensing decoding and transmission of sensing results. Specifically, SIMAC first introduces a multimodal semantic fusion (MSF) network, which employs two extractors to extract semantic information from radar signals and images, respectively. MSF then applies cross-attention mechanisms to fuse these unimodal features and generate multimodal semantic representations. Secondly, we present a large language model (LLM)-based semantic encoder (LSE), where relevant communication parameters and multimodal semantics are mapped into a unified latent space and input to the LLM, enabling channel-adaptive semantic encoding. Thirdly, a task-oriented sensing semantic decoder (SSD) is proposed, in which different decoded heads are designed according to the specific needs of tasks. Simultaneously, a multi-task learning strategy is introduced to train the SIMAC framework, achieving diverse sensing services. Finally, experimental simulations demonstrate that the proposed framework achieves diverse sensing services and higher accuracy. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A Unified Open Adapter for Open-World Noisy Label Learning: Data-Centric and Learning-Based Insights

Noisy label learning (NLL) in open-world scenarios poses a novel challenge due to the presence of noisy data from both known and unknown classes. Most existing methods operate under the closed-set assumption, rendering them vulnerable to open-set noise, which significantly degrades their performance. While some approaches attempt to mitigate the impact of open-set examples, they struggle to learn effective discriminative representations for them, leading to unsatisfactory recognition performance. To address these issues, we propose a unified Open Adapter (OpenAda) that identifies open-set noise from both data-centric and learning-based perspectives, and can be easily integrated into mainstream NLL methods to improve their performance and robustness. Specifically, the data-centric part leverages label clusterability to sequentially identify basic clean and basic open-set examples both with high neighbor agreement. The learning-based part integrates one-vs-all classifiers with a progressive open disambiguation strategy to learn a reliable "inlier vs. outlier" boundary for each class. This enables the model to detect challenging open-set examples that partially overlap in the representation space with closed-set ones. Extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets validate the superiority of our approach. Notably, with minor modifications, DivideMix with OpenAda achieves performance improvements of 9.31% and 18.26% on the open-world CIFAR-80 dataset under 80% symmetric noise and 40% asymmetric noise. We propose a multi-agent approach (SeM-Agents) based on large language models for medical consultations. This framework incorporates various doctor roles and auxiliary roles, with agents communicating through natural language. Using a residual structure, the system conducts multi-round medical consultations based on the patient’s treatment background and symptoms. In the final summary and output stage of the consultation, it utilizes two experience databases—the Correct Consultation Experience Database and the Chain of Thought (CoT) Experience Database—which evolve with accumulated experience during consultations. This evolution drives the framework’s self-improvement, significantly enhancing the rationality and accuracy of the consultations. To ensure that the conclusions are safe, reliable, and aligned with human values, the final decisions undergo a safety review before being provided to the patient. This framework achieved accuracy rates of 89.2% and 83.1% on the MedQA and PubMedQA datasets, respectively.

Class-Aware Prompting for Federated Few-Shot Class-Incremental Learning

Few-Shot Class-Incremental Learning (FSCIL) aims to continuously learn new classes from limited samples while preventing catastrophic forgetting. With the increasing distribution of learning data across different clients and privacy concerns, FSCIL faces a more realistic scenario where few learning samples are distributed across different clients, thereby necessitating a Federated Few-Shot Class-Incremental Learning (FedFSCIL) scenario. However, this integration faces challenges from non-IID problem, which affects model generalization and training efficiency. The communication overhead in federated settings also presents a significant challenge. To address these issues, we propose Class-Aware Prompting for Federated Few-Shot Class-Incremental Learning (FedCAP). Our framework leverages pre-trained models enhanced by a class-wise prompt pool, where shared class-wise keys enable clients to utilize global class information during training. This unifies the understanding of base class features across clients and enhances model consistency. We further incorporate a class-level information fusion module to improve class representation and model generalization. Our approach requires very few parameter transmission during model aggregation, ensuring communication efficiency. To our knowledge, this is the first study to explore the scenario of FedFSCIL. Consequently, we designed comprehensive experimental setups and made the code publicly available. © 2025 IEEE. All rights reserved.
