The network infrastructures are under the threat of large-scale disruptions, both natural (like earthquake, flooding) and intentional (like EMP attack, bomb explosion). In such scenarios, a number of network elements are likely to be destroyed simultaneously when they are intersected in a geographically correlated region, and thus may dramatically compromise the connectivity or even disconnect the network. In this paper we focus on the issue of providing continuous communication against region failure. We define two optimization problems: the first problem considers effective connection recovery when a disruptive event happens, and the second one studies network augmentation to build a resilient network against any single region failure. We prove that both problems are NP-hard, and then propose two heuristic algorithms to solve these optimization problems.

In this paper, we study two tightly coupled topics in online social networks (OSN): relationship classification and information propagation. The links in a social network often reflect social relationships among users. In this work, we first investigate identifying the relationships among social network users based on certain social network property and limited pre-known information. Social networks have been widely used for online marketing. A critical step is the propagation maximization by choosing a small set of seeds for marketing. Based on the social relationships learned in the first step, we show how to exploit these relationships to maximize the marketing efficacy. We evaluate our approach on large scale real-world data from Renren network, showing that the performances of our relationship classification and propagation maximization algorithm are pretty good in practice. © 2011 IEEE.

We present a fast collision detection method for deformable surfaces with parallel spatial hashing on GPU architecture. The efficient update and access of the uniform grid are exploited to accelerate the performance in our method. To deal with the inflexible memory system, which makes the building of stream data a challenging task on GPU, we propose to subdivide the whole workload into irregular segments and design an efficient evaluation algorithm, which employs parallel scan and stream compaction, to build the stream data in parallel. The load balancing is a key aspect that needs to be considered in the SIMD parallelism. We break the heavy and irregular collision computation down into lightweight part and heavyweight part, ensuring the later perfectly run in load balancing manner with each concurrent thread processes just a single collision. In practice, our approach can perform collision detection in tens of milliseconds on a PC with NVIDIAGTX 260 graphics card on benchmarks composed of millions of triangles. The results highlight our speedups over prior CPU-based and GPU-based algorithms. © 2011 IEEE.

Context Awareness and Mobility are two fundamental characteristics of ubiquitous and pervasive computing, where users may wander among smart spaces equipped with kinds of devices providing types of services with respects to the changing contexts of the users, the environments and the services themselves. Generally, an underlying infrastructure or middleware is needed to support such mobile context aware applications. Inspired by the inherent autonomy and mobility of software agents, in this paper we propose a middleware named Artemis-FollowMe, which utilizes mobile agents as basic components both for handling contexts and building applications. Especially, we focus on how the mobile capability of agents could be used to enable distributed and efficient management of contexts. We also have built a prototype and conducted many experiments to show how and how well our FollowMe works.

With continuous scaling down of the semiconductor technology, the soft errors induced by energetic particles have become an increasing challenge in designing current and next-generation reliable microprocessors. Due to their large share of the transistor budget and die area, cache memories suffer from an increasing vulnerability against soft errors. Previous work based on the vulnerability factor (VF) analysis proposed analytical models to evaluate the reliability of on-chip data and instruction caches. However, we have no possession of a system-level study on the vulnerability of instruction caches. In this paper, we propose a new analytical model to estimate the system-level vulnerability factor for on-chip instruction caches. In our model, the error masking/detection effects in instructions based on the Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) are studied. Our experimental results using SPEC benchmark suite show that the self-error-masking/detection in instructions will reduce the VF of the instruction caches compared to the previous study. We also conduct an evaluation on the effectiveness of the reliability optimization techniques for instruction caches under our system-level VF characterization. Our proposed vulnerability model can provide an insightful guidance for the reliable instruction cache and ISA design.

Machine learning algorithms have provided core functionality to many application domains - such as bioinformatics, computational linguistics, etc. However, it is difficult to detect faults in such applications because often there is no "test oracle" to verify the correctness of the computed outputs. To help address the software quality, in this paper we present a technique for testing the implementations of machine learning classification algorithms which support such applications. Our approach is based on the technique "metamorphic testing", which has been shown to be effective to alleviate the oracle problem. Also presented include a case study on a real-world machine learning application framework, and a discussion of how programmers implementing machine learning algorithms can avoid the common pitfalls discovered in our study. We also conduct mutation analysis and cross-validation, which reveal that our method has high effectiveness in killing mutants, and that observing expected cross-validation result alone is not sufficiently effective to detect faults in a supervised classification program. The effectiveness of metamorphic testing is further confirmed by the detection of real faults in a popular open-source classification program. © 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

With the rapid development of Web services, Web service discovery becomes a significant challenge in the matching precision and efficiency. In this paper, we present a novel method in the view of users' requirements for Web Service discovery. We set up the requirement model firstly, so as to present users' requirements in details, then cluster the Web Services due to users' common requirements, and obtain corresponding Web services' QoS values. Thus, users can find their really needed Web services in an ordered list. The case study indicates the effect of our method, namely, in the view of users' requirements, we sort the candidate Services due to their functions and their QoS attributes in descending order. © 2011 IEEE.

Regression testing is the most common method for ensuring the quality of changed software. As UML models are widely used as design blueprints, model-based test case generation techniques can be used in regression test cases generation. However, test cases obtained from these techniques are usually represented as sequences of actions in abstract models, and heavy human efforts are needed to transform them into test cases accepted by software for execution. To reduce this effort, we present an approach to automatically generate executable test cases for regression testing based on activity diagrams. It combines a technique of activity diagrams based regression test cases classification to pick up retestable test cases, and a technique of feedback-directed test cases generation to generate test cases for new behaviors in changed software. We implement the tool MDRTGen to show the performance of the approach. The experiments show the good performance of the approach in improving the efficiency of test cases generation and decreasing the cost in regression testing.

High availability, reliability and scalability are basic prerequisites for cloud applications. Due to dynamically varying workloads, it's necessary to provide resource guarantees to cloud applications for meeting QoS requirements. However, it's not trivial to generate a precise scalability policy for multi-tiers cloud applications to adapt to dynamically varying workload and satisfy QoS requirements simultaneously with minimal resource consumption. In this paper, we present an on-line scalability controller of multi-tiers applications to handle with unpredictable changing workloads. The solution is based on the use of layered queuing network model combined with our dynamic resource allocation techniques. Our performance model relates application performance to their resource requirements and dynamically varying workloads. Then we evaluate our approach via experiments with real-world workloads in different scenarios. Our results indicate that our performance model faithfully captures the behaviors of multi-tiers applications over a various range of workloads and configuration schemes. Moreover, it also shows that our techniques can judiciously obtain the optimized configuration scheme effectively with modest computation.

This paper advances Linux network computer model based on Loongson Mipsel architecture, from the aspect of computer architecture. This paper develops the target system and Debian/Linux operating system for Loongson network computers, with the thought of software engineering. This paper examines the results of practical operations during implementation phase. Our data demonstrates that Loongson network computer has a considerable advantage compared with other similar products from all aspects of overall system performance, security, power and cost. This research result has been promoted in series of Loongson "MyLoong" computers.
