Sketch-based user interface for inputting graphic objects on small screen devices 4

For small screen devices, such as PDAs, which totally depend on a pen-based user interface, traditional menu-selection/button-clicking based user interface becomes inconvenient for graphics inputting. In this paper, a novel sketch-based graphics inputting user interface is presented. By sketching a few constituent primitive shapes of the userintended graphic object, the candidate graphic objects in the shape database are guessed and displayed in a ranked list according to their partial structural similarity to what the user has drawn. The user can then choose the right one from the list and replace the sketchy strokes with the exact graphic object with proper parameters, such as position, size and angle. This user interface is natural for graphics input and is especially suitable for schematic design. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

Openness is one of the features of modern open controllers. The porting ability of open control software is one of the most important aspects related to openness. In order to realize portability in future open control software, a thorough discussion about its conception is presented for a typical hierarchical control software architecture. A relative comparison of the three main corresponding programming language standards is presented because the realization of portability mostly depends on developing tools. The discussion and comparative results may be helpful to improve or preserve portability of future open control software.

Although the modeling technologies for open robot controllers have been discussed widely, not much literature is devoted to the actual general modeling principles and strategies. The reason is that many researches focus on specific application fields. This paper accommodates for this lacuna and provides some general modeling principles and strategies. At last, the actual new modeling method Hierarchical Object Oriented Petri net (HOONet) which has been proved to be an effective modeling methodology, is used to illustrate the modeling strategies.

A new evolutionary algorithm, which can contract search space based on the partial ordering relation and is designed to solve nonlinear programming (NLP), is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the partial ordering relation is used for evaluating an individual, which ensures that individual competition is more impartial. Secondly, by taking advantage of incomplete evolution, which provides good individuals in short time, we can locate regions of optimal solutions and contract the search space and thus reduce the search space and increase the convergence rate. Thirdly, we prove that the algorithm can find optimal solutions. Finally, the algorithm can be easily parallelized. Numerical experiments demonstrate that our techniques are superior to other methods in terms of solution quality and robustness.

A novel and fast shape classification and regularization algorithm for on-line sketchy graphics recognition is proposed. We divided the on-line graphics recognition process into four stages: preprocessing, shape classification, shape fitting, and regularization. The attraction force model is proposed to combine progressively the vertices on the input sketchy stroke and reduce the total number of vertices before the type of shape can be determined After that, the shape is fitted and gradually rectified to a regular one, thus the regularized shape fits the user-intended one precisely. Experimental results show that this algorithm can rapidly yield good recognition precision (averagely above 90%) and a fine regularization effect. Consequently, it is especially suitable for weak computation environments such as PDAs, which solely depend on a pen-based user interface.

Modularization of BCCDS (bornite craftworks creative design system) asks for data communications between functional modules of the system. This paper presents an improved communicating mechanism based on shared memory, expounding its design and algorithms, and applies it to BCCDS to build up a BCCDS oriented data communicating model. The efficiency of the communicating model is verified in the communication between two functional modules of BCCDS. Both methodology and case analysis prove that the data communicating model can preferably implement the data communications between functional modules of BCCDS and improve the efficiency of the bornite craftworks creative design.

Classes are the basic modules in object-oriented (OO) software, which consist of attributes and methods. Thus, in an OO environment, cohesion mainly concerns how tight the attributes and methods of classes are. This paper discusses the relationships between attributes and attributes, attributes and methods, and methods and methods of a class based on dependence analysis. Then we discuss the properties of these relationships. According to these properties, this paper proposes a novel approach to measuring class cohesion. Our approach overcomes the limitations of previous class cohesion measures, which consider only one or two of the three relationships in a class. We also prove that this measure satisfies the properties that a good measurement should have.

Applications of the Hough Transform (HT) have been limited to small-size images for a long time. For large-size images, peak detection and line verification become much more time-consuming. Many HT-based line detection methods are not able to detect line width. This paper proposes a new approach for detecting line segments using HT, with applicability to large size images, especially for those situations where line width is critical. Our approach applies a boundary recorder to eliminate redundant analyses, and employs an image-analysis-based line-verification method to overcome the difficulty of using a threshold to distinguish short lines from noise. It avoids overlapping lines by removing the pixels of detected line segments, a method which is more robust than only clearing the N/spl times/N neighborhood. This approach could be easily extended to improved HT methods that perform global accumulation. Experimental results show that this approach is very time efficient for large-size images.

Recognizing graphic objects from binary images is an important task in many real-life applications. Generally, there are two ways to do the graphics recognition: one-step methods and two-step methods. The former recognizes graphic objects from binary images directly, while the latter consists of vectorization and postprocessing. Neither of them is perfect enough to handle all difficulties. The paper first reviews popular graphics recognition methods to understand their advantages and disadvantages. Next, the performance comparison between two classes of methods is made in two important aspects: the time efficiency and the graphics quality, and the experimental results of time-efficiency comparison of 7 popular methods are also reported. Finally, we propose a new hybrid graphics-recognition paradigm to integrate the advantages of both one-step methods and two-step methods and minimize their disadvantages. The proposed paradigm is capable of recognizing straight lines, arcs, circles and curves efficiently, and is helpful for extracting text images in text-graphics touching cases.
