Integrated terahertz vortex beam emitter for rotating target detection

Silicon microring resonators (MRRs) with embedded PN junctions have emerged as pivotal components in high-capacity optical interconnects, serving as modulators or photodetectors due to their compact size, low power consumption, high bandwidth, and inherent wavelength selectivity. However, their resonance wavelengths are highly sensitive to fabrication-induced variations—nanometer-scale deviations in waveguide dimensions can result in significant resonance shifts—necessitating effective post-fabrication tuning mechanisms. Conventional solutions like integrating thermal phase shifters with MRRs enable wavelength tuning but at the cost of increased power consumption. Additionally, various wavelength trimming techniques including germanium ion implantation, continuous laser trimming, femtosecond laser trimming, and polymer material cladding, either have a limited tuning range or require a complex system, and hence they are not suitable for field programming of resonance wavelength. In this work, we introduce a novel integration of low-loss phase change material Sb2Se3 directly atop the PN junctions of silicon MRRs, enabling precise post-fabrication resonance trimming without altering the MRR physical dimensions or performance characteristics. By applying a forward-biased electrical pulse through the PN junction, we induce a phase transition in the Sb2Se3, achieving resonance wavelength tuning across an entire free spectral range (FSR) with minimal impact on modulation and detection capabilities and without the need for extra heating pads. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this method by uniformly aligning the resonance wavelengths of four cascaded SbSe-integrated MRRs, each capable of 100 Gbps on–off keying (OOK) modulation and detection, culminating in a combined data rate of 400 Gbps. The growing demand for location-based services in areas like virtual reality, robot control, and navigation has intensified the focus on indoor localization. Visible light positioning (VLP), leveraging visible light communications (VLC), becomes a promising indoor positioning technology due to its high accuracy and low cost. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of VLP systems. In particular, since VLC lays the foundation for VLP, we first present a detailed overview of the principles of VLC. Then, we provide an in-depth overview of VLP algorithms. The performance of each positioning algorithm is also compared in terms of various metrics such as accuracy, coverage, and orientation limitation. Beyond the physical layer studies, the network design for a VLP system is also investigated, including multi-access technologies, resource allocation, and light-emitting diode (LED) placements. Next, the applications of the VLP systems are overviewed. Finally, this paper outlines open issues, challenges, and opportunities for the research field. In a nutshell, this paper constitutes the first holistic survey on VLP from state-of-the-art studies to practical uses. © 1998-2012 IEEE.

To deal with the invalidation of commonly employed series model and parallel model in capacitance-voltage(C-V)characterization of organic thin films when current injection is significant,a three-element equivalent circuit model is *** this basis,the expression of real capacitance in consideration of current injection is theoretically derived by small-signal analysis *** validity of the proposed equivalent circuit and theoretical expression are verified by a simulating circuit consisting of a capacitor,a diode,and a ***,the accurate C-V characteristic of an organic thin film device is obtained via theoretical correction of the experimental measuring result,and the real capacitance is 35.7%higher than the directly measured capacitance at 5-V bias in the parallel *** work strongly demonstrates the necessity to consider current injection in C-V measurement and provides a strategy for accurate C-V characterization experimentally.

A novel communication-centric integrated sensing and communication waveform design method is proposed. The sensing mutual information is introduced as a metric to evaluate system sensing performance. By combining the established mathematical system model, the crosstalk between communication and sensing is theoretically minimized, while the mutual information carried by the sensing signal regarding the sensing target is theoretically maximized. The sensing signal spectrum distribution is designed based on the optimization results, ultimately forming the water-filling-based integrated waveform design method. This approach maximizes overall system performance, enabling a high-performance integrated sensing and communication system. Using the proposed waveform design method, the frequency-division ISAC-OF system simultaneously achieves 25-Gbit/s data transmission and meter-level localization of fiber fault points over a 20-km single-mode fiber link. Simulation experiments verify that the proposed integrated waveform design method achieves the combination of high-speed optical fiber communication with high-precision optical fiber sensing. © 2025 SPIE.

Analytical Impact-Excitation Theory of Er/O/B Codoped Si Light-Emitting Diodes

Er doped Si light-emitting diodes may find important applications in silicon photonics and optical quantum computing. These diodes exhibit an emission efficiency 2 orders of magnitude higher at reverse bias than forward bias due to impact excitation. However, physics of impact excitation in these devices remains largely unexplored. In this work, we fabricated an Er/O/B codoped Si light-emitting diode which exhibits a strong electroluminescence by the impact excitation of electrons inelastically colliding the Er ions. An analytical impact-excitation theory was established to predict the electroluminescence intensity and internal quantum efficiency which fit well with the experimental data. From the fittings, we find that the excitable Er ions reach a record concentration of 1.8×1019 cm−3 and up to 45% of them is in an excitation state by impact excitation. This work has important implications for developing efficient classical and quantum light sources based on rare earth elements in semiconductors.

By pushing computation,cache,and network control to the edge,mobile edge computing(MEC)is expected to play a leading role in fifth generation(5G)and future sixth generation(6G).Nevertheless,facing ubiquitous fast-growing computational demands,it is impossible for a single MEC paradigm to effectively support high-quality intelligent services at end user equipments(UEs).To address this issue,we propose an air-ground collaborative MEC(AGCMEC)architecture in this *** proposed AGCMEC integrates all potentially available MEC servers within air and ground in the envisioned 6G,by a variety of collaborative ways to provide computation services at their best for ***,we introduce the AGC-MEC architecture and elaborate three typical use ***,we discuss four main challenges in the AGC-MEC as well as their potential ***,we conduct a case study of collaborative service placement for AGC-MEC to validate the effectiveness of the proposed collaborative service placement ***,we highlight several potential research directions of the AGC-MEC.

Large scale artificial intelligence (AI) models possess excellent capabilities in semantic representation and understanding, making them particularly well-suited for semantic encoding and decoding. However, the substantial scale of these AI models imposes unacceptable computational resources and communication delays. To address this issue, we propose a semantic communication scheme based on robust knowledge distillation (RKD-SC) for large scale model enabled semantic communications. In the considered system, a transmitter extracts the features of the source image for robust transmission and accurate image classification at the receiver. To effectively utilize the superior capability of large scale model while make the cost affordable, we first transfer knowledge from a large scale model to a smaller scale model to serve as the semantic encoder. Then, to enhance the robustness of the system against channel noise, we propose a channel-aware autoencoder (CAA) based on the Transformer architecture. Experimental results show that the encoder of proposed RKD-SC system can achieve over 93.3% of the performance of a large scale model while compressing 96.67% number of parameters. Two-photon endomicroscopy is a high-resolution label-free imaging technique for biological tissues. This paper analyzes sinusoidal and triangular amplitude modulation methods for spiral scanning two-photon endomicroscopy. In the theoretical modeling section, the mathematical model of PZT fiber scanner is established, and the distortion of fiber scanning trajectory caused by two amplitude modulated sine wave signals is simulated and evaluated. In the experimental verification section, a test platform is constructed to measure the scanning trajectory distortion driven by these amplitude modulated sine wave signals. Finaly, spiral scanning two-photon endomicroscopic imaging of in-vivo GFP mice brain tissues using sinusoidal amplitude modulated signals are demonstrated. © 2025 SPIE.
