In this paper, we illustrate our attempt in an effective method of free space optical (FSO) communications. Firstly, a pulse-position modulated (PPM) optical interleave-division multiple-access (OIDMA) system is designed. Secondly, to alleviate the degrading effects of atmospheric turbulence, cooperative relay technique is adopted by OIDMA for achieving spatial diversity and robust transmission performance. Thirdly, to study the convergence behavior of the proposed relay-assisted optical PPM-OIDMA system, extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) charts are analyzed. By deriving the trajectories of the exchanged extrinsic information from EXIT charts, the time of iterations required for convergence can be easily predicted. The effects of scintillation, thermal noise, background noise and multi-user interference have been taken into consideration. © 2011 IEEE.

A 4th-order channel selection low-pass Gm-C filter for multi-mode wireless receivers is presented. The filter is designed with a Chebyshev prototype and supports different wireless communication modes including W-CDMA, TD-SCDMA, LTE, and IEEE802.11a/b/g wireless-LANs. A linear operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) which has variable transconductance is used to achieve the wide tuning range of the filter. Implemented in the SMIC 0.13μm CMOS process, the measurement results show that the filter can operate successfully over a cutoff frequency range of 1MHz to 15MHz, Which is compliant with the requirements of different wireless communication modes. The out-of-band input 3rd order intercept point is 15.2dBm. The input referred noise is 17.4nV/Hz1/2 and the noise figure is 25.6dB. The power consumption is 11.4mW at 15MHz cutoff frequency under a 1.2V supply voltage. The size of the proposed filter is 1.5mmx1mm. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper, we describe the impact of quadrature imbalance(QI) in the presence of frequency offset in an optical coherent offset quadrature phase shift keying(OQPSK) receiver. Arbitrary conjugate misalignment was realized in a 2×4 90° optical hybrid, and the ellipse correction(EC) method of quadrature imbalance was applied in our simulation. In the case of transmission,the EC method can significantly improve the system performance.

In this paper, a turbo-coded optical interleave-division multiple-access (OIDMA) scheme is studied. A maximum a posteriori (MAP) based asynchronous on-off keying (OOK) MUD algorithm is proposed. Besides, system capacity is analyzed with an iterative technique called SNR evolution. BER is evaluated over log-normal turbulence channels, taking into consideration the effects of thermal noise and background noise. Simulation results show that the proposed OIDMA scheme has good convergence property and low BER performance. Moreover, the related interleaver-based iteration MUD algorithm is quite robust in the asynchronous scenarios. © 2011 IEEE.

Conventional clock skew scheduling for sequential circuits can be formulated as a minimum cycle ratio (MCR) problem, and hence can be solved effectively by methods such as Howard's algorithm. However, its application is practically limited due to the difficulties in reliably implementing a large set of arbitrary dedicated clock delays for the flip-flops. Multi-domain clock skew scheduling was proposed to tackle this impracticality by constraining the total number of clock delays. Even though this problem can be formulated as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP), it is expensive to solve optimally in general. In this paper, we show that, under mild restrictions, the underlying domain assignment problem can be formulated as a special MILP that can be solved effectively using similar techniques for the MCR problem. In particular, we design a generalized Howard's algorithm for solving this problem efficiently. We also develop a critical-cycle-oriented refinement algorithm to further improve the results. The experimental results on ISCAS89 benchmarks show both the accuracy and efficiency of our algorithm. For example, only 4.3% of the tests have larger than 1% degradation (3% in the worst case), and all the tests finish in less than 0.7 seconds on a laptop with a 2.1GHz processor. © 2011 EDAA.

To help people with color vision deficiency, an embedded color image processing device is proposed and designed. Firstly, the image processing algorithms, containing perception simulation and color adjusting for color vision deficiency, are developed and tested using the computer. Then an embedded hardware system is designed, which can both exhibit the perception of different types of color vision deficiency and implement different types of color transformation algorithms. This device supplies a hardware platform for the research on color vision deficiency. It is also a prototype of portable instruments that help improve the color discrimination of color-deficient people. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper reports a planar flow cytometer for the detection of fluorescent particles using evanescent waves based on the liquid total internal reflection (L-TIR). This on-chip flow cytometer is able to form the evanescent waves on the interface between liquids which can be used to detect the fluorescent particles in nanosize with high speeds. The total internal reflection is formed to generate the evanescent waves by the geometry of the liquid interface which is defined by the structure of the device. The particles are injected and focused by the hydrodynamic method which makes the particles go through the optical detection area shined by the exciting laser one by one. This method has been proven to be a fast and effective method to analyze fluorescent particles or cells with the exciting light in the depth of several hundred nanometers. © 2011 IEEE.

A single-core liquid waveguide is reported to be used in the fluorescence enhancement. The liquid waveguide consists of the high refractive index liquid core and the low refractive index sheath liquid. The diameter of the liquid core can be tuned by sheath flow, and the liquid waveguide can work in different status of the refractive index profiles by the diffusion of the high refractive index solution. Because of the total internal reflection on the liquid interface and the focusing by the gradient refractive indices, the intensity of the fluorescent light collected inside the liquid core is increased. The fluorescence enhancement by the liquid waveguide is characterized by measuring the intensities from the top and the end of the liquid waveguide by the spectrometer. The result shows that the fluorescence enhancement is successfully achieved in the liquid waveguide by controlling the refractive index profiles of the liquids. © 2011 IEEE.

Sputtered HfO 2 and co-sputtered BZT-HfO 2 dielectrics have been compared for high density metal-insulator-metal (MIM) capacitors, which are required for radio frequency and analog/mixed-signal integrated circuits. The MIM capacitor with BZT-HfO 2 shows a high permittivity value of 20.8, and the small quadratic voltage coefficient of capacitance of 1830 ppm/V 2 at 100kHz compared to that with HfO 2 dielectric. Further, the leakage characteristics of the capacitors with HfO 2 and BZT-HfO 2 dielectrics have been studied as a function of measurement temperature, and the conduction mechanisms are discussed.
