Homopolar inductor alternator (HIA) has shown its promising advantages in capacitor charging power supply (CCPS). For accelerating HIA-CCPS system design process, researchers have been making efforts to simplify the simulation analysis, but the models were not universal or effective enough. In this paper, a simplified look-up-table model considering the changes of speed and field flux linkage in HIA-CCPS is proposed. While realizing fast calculation, it can also reflect the dynamic process similar to the transient model, which is very exact and effective. © 2023 IEEE.

Frequency and voltage dynamics, as the focus of power systems, depends more and more on the frequency and amplitude response characteristics of renewable energy devices being subjected to power imbalance. Doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind turbine (WT) is representative of renewable energy devices and shows different characteristics from those of conventional synchronous generator (SG). Unfortunately, the individual characteristics ofWT during system frequency and voltage dynamics are not intuitively illustrated by the existing structure-oriented models. Therefore, this paper aims to propose a function-oriented modeling methodology by representing inertia-controlled DFIG-based WT as internal voltage frequency and amplitude solely stimulated by active and reactive power imbalance. The individuality of characteristics is demonstrated that with grid voltage detection-based controls the internal voltage depends yet solely on power imbalance of WT, just like the case of SG. Through the infinity gain equivalence of the fast-electromagnetic loops, a simplified analytical model illustrating the electromechanical characteristics ofWT is further proposed. Based on the model, the similarities and differences between the characteristics of WT and SG are recognized. Armature, as an important part of the electromagnetic launch system, is a current carrier which converts electric energy into kinetic energy of projectiles, and it often suffers extreme environment in the launch process. Therefore, the performance of launch system is directly affected by the armature whose structure is the fundamental of the application of launch technology. Among various armature types, solid armatures are the most widely used because of some characteristics of them, like high efficiency and low mass. Based on some key functions of solid armatures, three kinds of requirements including current-carrying capacity, mechanical pressure and electromagnetic contact pressure are proposed in this paper. Besides, research progress of material and structure of the solid armature and its optimization is also introduced in this paper. © 2024 Eindhoven University of technology.

Linear compressors are being widely used in a huge variety of applications due to their higher efficiency than traditional rotary compressors. The linear compressor is driven by the Linear Oscillatory Machine (LOM), and the sensor-less control of LOM is very important to make linear compressors more efficient and compatible auxiliary for big systems like refrigerators, air conditioners, automatic gates etc. A novel piston stroke estimation method has been proposed in this article to obtain the sensor less control of the LOM. This method utilizes an improved third-order generalized integrator (TOGI) based novel sliding mode observer (SMO) for LOM piston stroke estimation. In addition to this, an absolute reaching law with a chosen sliding surface has been implemented to further reduce the effects of sliding chattering. The piston stroke signal suffers DC offsets and harmonics due to mismatched machine parameters, nonlinearities of the converter, and first-order integration of back-electromotive force (EMF). In some recent studies, the second-order generalized integrator (SOGI) has been used to reduce pure integral saturation problem, but it still has a limited attenuation ability against DC components and has considerable steady-state error. Therefore, in order to improve the accuracy of the estimated stroke signals, a new method has been proposed in this article, which can not only solve the integral saturation problem, but also reduce the steady-state error of the estimated piston stroke, effectively. The simulation results and the numerical analysis prove the authenticity of the proposed method. © 2024 IEEE.

Distinction of weak and strong AC grids for emerging hierarchical-infeed LCC-UHVDC systems is important for planning and operation departments. However, accuracy of earlier distinction methods is limited as they were developed by empirical reasoning without rigorous theoretical analysis. Hence in this letter, hierarchical-infeed interactive effective short-circuit ratio (HIESCR) index is first used for strength evaluation of HIDC systems with complex inter-inverter interactions considered. Boundary HIESCR (BHIESCR) is also introduced in the proposed distinction method of weak and strong AC grids. That is, weak (or strong) AC grids are, respectively, identified when HIESCR is less (or greater) than BHIESCR. Second, it is shown BHIESCR remains almost unchanged as 3.0 versus various system parameters and rated operation variables based on rigorous theoretical analysis. This salient feature makes the proposed method more accurate than earlier methods. Finally, the proposed method is validated by simulations based on the PSCAD/EMTDC program.

Under extended-phase-shift (EPS) modulation, both the internal phase-shift angle and the external phase-shift angle will have large step changes when the dual-bridge series resonant converter (DBSRC) rapidly adjusts the transmission power. This will cause serious oscillations in the resonant current and resonant voltage of DBSRC and threaten the safety of the converter. This paper analyzes the transient process produced by sudden changes in phase shift angles under EPS modulation. Then a fast transient control method is proposed for suppressing the oscillation by utilizing both internal and external phase-shift angles, which controls the transient process within one switching cycle and achieves a smooth transition of transmission power. Besides, impact and oscillation on the resonant current and resonant voltage during transient processes are significantly reduced. Finally, the performance of the control method is verified based on experimental and simulation results. © 2023 IEEE.

Investigation of gyrotron-based collective Thomson scattering for fast ion diagnostics in a compact high-field tokamak

As a promising method for fast ion diagnostics,collective Thomson scattering(CTS)can measure the one-dimensional velocity distribution of fast ions with high spatial and temporal *** feasibility of diagnosing fast ions in a compact high-field tokamak by CTS was studied in this work,and the results showed that a wide range of probing frequencies could be applied.A high-frequency case and a low-frequency case were mainly considered for fast ion diagnostics in a compact high-field *** use of a high probing frequency could effectively avoid the refraction effect of the beams,while the application of a low probing frequency allows greater flexibility in the selection of scattering angle which may help to improve the spatial *** on typical plasma conditions(B_(0)=12.2 T,n_(e0)=4.3×10^(20)m^(-3),T_(e0)=22.2 keV,T_(i0)=19.8 keV)for a compact high-field tokamak,a220 GHz CTS diagnostic that utilizes a small scattering angle ofθ=30°and a 160 GHz CTS diagnostic that utilizes an orthogonal geometry were *** study showed that the high-frequency case could operate in a wider range of plasma conditions and provide more information on fast ions while the low-frequency case could achieve higher spatial resolution of the poloidal direction.

The Iron-based superconductors(IBS) have high upper critical field, low anisotropy and strong current carrying capacity, which are expected to be the next-generation high temperature superconductors. This paper describes a 13 Tesla hybrid magnet using YBCO tapes and iron-based tapes. The design approach is aimed at verifying the superiority of Iron-based superconducting tapes using a shorter length of IBS tapes. The support structure is designed to improve the mechanical stability of magnets. Through mechanical analysis, it is verified that the magnet meets the design requirements and the operation stability. © 2023 IEEE.

The differential boost inverter (DBI) has gained a great deal of interest in academia due to its advantages. Compared with conventional cascaded topology composed of a DC-DC boost circuit and a voltage source inverter, DBI needs only one-level topology to achieve boost inverter, thus has higher efficiency and lower cost. The three-phase DBI can be applied to motor drives and grid connection. Based on analyzing the structure and operating principle of three-phase DBI, this paper presents an elaborate and in-depth review of typical control strategies for three-phase DBI, including their basic principles, key features, exiting issues, and relevant suggestions, and finally reports the development tendency of the control strategies. © 2023 IEEE.
