The precise localization of insulators in visible images is crucial for ensuring the integrity of power systems. In UVAs inspections, challenges such as arbitrary angles, dense distributions, and complex backgrounds often hinder accurate detection. However, existing methods primarily employ axial horizontal detection boxes to detect insulators, which overlook insulator characteristics. To further improve the accuracy, this paper optimizes YOLOv5 across four key areas: rectangular box representation, feature extraction, lightweight convolution, and detection head design. The results show that this paper uses rotating detection boxes instead of axial horizontal detection boxes, which removes a large amount of redundant background information and improves the average accuracy and operation speed. Our experiments on the insulator defect dataset achieved the average accuracy of 97.91% at an intersection ratio of 0.5. Additionally, our algorithm shows promise for extending to defect detection in various power equipment, laying a solid foundation for future automation initiatives. © Beijing Paike Culture Commu. This article elaborates the stability analysis of the grid-forming (GFM) voltage-source converters (VSCs) with the single-loop voltage-magnitude (SLVM) control and the virtual resistor. It is revealed that the virtual resistor can greatly change the stability region of the SLVM controlled VSCs, even it is mainly used to eliminate the synchronous resonance introduced by the power control. The mathematical model is then derived, from which the stability region can be analytically obtained. Simulations and experiments validate the theoretical analysis. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper proposes a torque sharing function (TSF) for Switched reluctance motor (SRM) based on the torque closed-loop compensation. Firstly, the online TSF method proposed in this paper takes the negative torque caused by current tailing into account and compensate it in the incoming phase. Secondly, the reference torque of incoming phase and outgoing phase are compensated through torque closed-loop, which enhance the system response ability. Thirdly, six-segment commutation intervals of the traditional TSF methods are divided into twelve segments and the switching states of commutation interval are reassigned, which reduces torque ripple caused by current tracking errors effectively. Simulation of the proposed TSF method and traditional TSF methods have been done on MATLAB. The results prove that the proposed TSF method has lower torque ripple and better current tracking capability compared to the traditional TSF. © 2024 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

The difficulty of online monitoring of fault discharge of large hydro generators lies in the processing of monitoring signals intertwined by noise, interference and various fault discharge pulses. Pulsed high-fidelity extraction is a critical step. The pulse extraction method based on sliding window energy in the time domain is fast and has a good effect on the oscillating pulse, but the extraction effect will deteriorate rapidly when the signal-to-noise ratio is low. In addition, the background noise intensity, as a key parameter, relies on manual selection of appropriate data segments for estimation. The number of sliding window points, as a key parameter, relies on manual acquisition of the pulse oscillation period. In this paper, an iterative estimation method of background noise intensity is used to automatically determine the background noise intensity. In this paper, the signal is transformed into wavelets, and the wavelet domain sliding window is used to extract the decomposition coefficient of the pulse, and the number of sliding window points does not need to manually obtain the pulse oscillation period. The pulse extraction results of both simulated and measured signals show that the proposed method has a better pulse extraction effect than the wavelet threshold denoising, and has a better and more stable pulse extraction effect than the pulse extraction method based on time-domain sliding window energy. © 2024 IEEE.

advance Warning Prior to Capacity Plunge of Liquid Metal Battery Using Data-driven Methods

The liquid metal battery (LMB) has gained attention as a novel energy storage technology due to its exceptional safety and long lifespan. Analyzing the aging trajectory, particularly capacity plunge process, is crucial for understanding its aging mechanism and enabling effective health diagnosis. However, it often lacks clear warning signs prior to the capacity plunge, hindering accurate capacity prediction and proactive measures in real-world applications. To address this challenge, this study proposes a data-driven method that effectively quantifies the capacity various in LMBs, enabling advance warning before the occurrence of a capacity plunge. Firstly, the Empirical Mode Decomposition method decomposes the capacity data into several components, representing different characteristics of LMBs. Subsequently, a Gaussian mixture model is applied to construct the feature distribution for each component, which exhibits a hump-shaped pattern. Finally, The Jensen-Shannon divergence is used to quantify the divergence of these humps, offering a concrete measure of LMB health and aging progression. The proposed method integrating both aging analysis and data-driven insights provides an advance warning of the capacity plunge, offering a reliable foundation for future lifespan prediction and fault diagnosis of LMBs. © 2025 IEEE.

Elastic properties of Cu–6wt% Ag alloy wires for pulsed magnets investigated by ultrasonic techniques

Conductor materials with good mechanical performance as well as high electrical and thermal conductivities are particularly important to break through the current bottle-neck limit(~ 100 T) of pulsed magnets. Here, we perform systematic studies on the elastic properties of the Cu–6wt% Ag alloy wire, which is a promising candidate material for the new-generation pulsed magnets, by employing two independent ultrasonic techniques, i.e., resonant ultrasound spectroscopy(RUS) and ultrasound pulse-echo experiments. Our RUS measurements manifest that the elastic properties of the Cu–6wt% Ag alloy wires can be improved by an electroplastic drawing procedure as compared with the conventional cold drawing. We also take this opportunity to test the availability of our newly-built ultrasound pulse-echo facility at the Wuhan National High Magnetic Field Center(WHMFC, China), and the results suggest that the elastic performance of the electroplastically-drawn Cu–6wt% Ag alloy wire remains excellent without anomalous softening under extreme conditions,e.g., in ultra-high magnetic field up to 50 T and nitrogen or helium cryogenic liquids.

The power ripple generated by the rectifier tends to pull down the power-to-hydrogen efficiency of water electrolyzers, which is rarely considered in the current research. In this paper, the impact of power ripple on electrolyzer performance is quantified based on electrochemical principle. Furthermore, different types of rectifiers, including thyristorbased, diode-based and IGBT-based rectifiers are compared in terms of efficiency. These topologies are further tested in the green hydrogen production system to find out the optimal topology to maximize the economical profit of the system. © 2024 IEEE.

AtomGAN:unsupervised deep learning for fast and accurate defect detection of 2D materials at the atomic scale

The extraction of atomic-level material features from electron microscope images is crucial for studying structure-property relationships and discovering new materials. However, traditional electron microscope analyses rely on time-consuming and complex human operations; thus, they are only applicable to images with a small number of atoms. In addition, the analysis results vary due to observers' individual deviations. Although efforts to introduce automated methods have been performed previously, many of these methods lack sufficient labeled data or require various conditions in the detection process that can only be applied to the target material. Thus, in this study, we developed AtomGAN, which is a robust, unsupervised learning method, that segments defects in classical 2D material systems and the heterostructures of MoS2/WS2automatically. To solve the data scarcity problem, the proposed model is trained on unpaired simulated data that contain point and line defects for MoS2/WS2. The proposed AtomGAN was evaluated on both simulated and real electron microscope images. The results demonstrate that the segmented point defects and line defects are presented perfectly in the resulting figures, with a measurement precision of 96.9%. In addition, the cycled structure of AtomGAN can quickly generate a large number of simulated electron microscope images.

Traditional Sliding Mode Observers (SMO) in sensorless control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) encounter issues such as chattering and phase delay, resulting in significant discrepancies between the estimated and actual rotor speed and position. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved SMO based on a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) and an Open-Loop Frequency Estimation-based Second-Order Generalized Integrator Frequency Adaptive Filter (OLFE-SOGI) structure. The FLC implements an SMO with a selfadjusting shape factor for the sigmoid function. This strategy accelerates the convergence speed of the SMO while reducing chattering caused by the boundary layer thickness. Additionally, to mitigate the adverse effects brought by lowpass filters (LPF), the OLFE-SOGI is employed to accurately extract the back electromotive force (back-EMF) without phase delay and effectively eliminate high-order harmonic components. Simulation results verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed strategy. © 2024 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.
