Dissolved organic matter removal using magnetic anion exchange resin treatment on biological effluent of textile dyeing wastewater

This study investigated the removal of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from real dyeing bio-treatment effluents (DBEs) with the use of a novel magnetic anion exchange resin (NDMP). DOMs in two typical DBEs were fractionized using DAX-8/XAD-4 resin and ultrafiltration membranes. The hydrophilic fractions and the low molecular weight (MW) (<3kDa) DOM fractions constituted a major portion (>50%) of DOMs for the two effluents. The hydrophilic and low MW fractions of both effluents were the greatest contributors of specific UV254 absorbance (SUVA254), and the SUVA254 of DOM fractions decreased with hydrophobicity and MW. Two DBEs exhibited acute and chronic biotoxicities. Both acute and chronic toxicities of DOM fractions increased linearly with the increase of SUVA254 value. Kinetics of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal via NDMP treatment was performed by comparing it with that of particle active carbon (PAC). Results indicated that the removal of DOC from DBEs via NDMP was 60%, whereas DOC removals by PAC were lower than 15%. Acidic organics could be significantly removed with the use of NDMP. DOM with large MW in DBE could be removed significantly by using the same means. Removal efficiency of NDMP for DOM decreased with the decrease of MW. Compared with PAC, NDMP could significantly reduce the acute and chronic bio-toxicities of DBEs. NaCl/NaOH mixture regenerants, with selected concentrations of 10% NaCl (m/m)/1% NaOH (m/m), could improve desorption efficiency.

Molecular dynamics simulation on the failure mechanism of Y-junction single-walled carbon nanotubes

Molecular dynamics simulation based on the second generation Brenner potential has been employed to investigate the mechanical properties and failure mechanism of Y-junction carbon nanotubes (Y-CNTs) under tensile loading. It was found that due to the existence of junction heptagonal defects, shear bands induced by the external load may expand outward in the form of spiral and promote the formation of Stone–Wales transformation, which therefore constitutes an effective way to dissipate the energy. We also study the temperature effect on the mechanical properties of Y-CNTs. Our simulation results provide useful insights to the design and fabrication of Y-CNTs based nanostructures and devices.

A magnetic sorbent for the efficient and rapid extraction of organic micropollutants from large-volume environmental water samples

A magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) method based on a novel magnetic sorbent was proposed for the extraction of target compounds from large-volume water samples. First, magnetic hypercrosslinked microspheres (NAND-1) were prepared via membrane emulsification-suspension polymerization and post crosslinking reaction. To ensure that the Fe3O4 nanoparticles could completely pass through the membrane without blocking the pores, oleic acid was used to modify the Fe3O4 nanoparticles, which enhanced lipophilicity and monodispersity of the magnetite nanoparticles. The obtained NAND-1 microspheres exhibited super paramagnetic characteristics and excellent magnetic responsiveness with a saturation magnetization of 2.53 emu/g. In addition, a uniform particle size (~8 μm) and a large average surface area (1303.59 m(2)/g) were also observed, which were both beneficial for the extraction of the target compounds. Thus, NAND-1 has the potential to simultaneously exhibit good extraction efficiencies toward different types of organic micropollutants (OMPs), including triazines, carbamazepine and diethyl phthalate. The conditions of the MSPE based on NAND-1 were optimized by single factor and orthogonal design experiments. This MSPE method needed only a small amount of sorbent (50mg/L) for the extraction of OMPs from a large-volume aquatic sample (5L) and reached equilibrium in a short amount of time (30 min). Moreover, the solution volume, the pH, and the salinity had insignificant influences on the extraction of the eight target OMPs. Under the optimum conditions, the recoveries of the eight OMPs calculated by analyzing the spiked samples were from 91.7% to 99.4%. The NAND-1 could be recycled ten times and still achieve recoveries of the eight OMPs higher than 86%. The limits of detection of the eight OMPs ranged from 1.76 to 27.56 ng/L, and the limits of quantification were from 5.71 to 92.05 ng/L. The defined oxidation ability of metallurgical slag based on the ion and molecule coexistence theory (IMCT), i.e., the comprehensive mass action concentration of iron oxides NFetO, was verified by comparing the calculated NFetO and the reported activity of iron oxides aFetO in selected 14 slag systems. To calculate NFetO in the selected slag systems, a thermodynamic model for calculating the mass action concentrations of structural units in CaO-SiO2-MgO-FeO-Fe2O3-MnO- Al2O3-P2O5 type slag systems, i.e., the IMCT-Nt thermodynamic model was developed. NFetO in the other 13 slag systems can be obtained by simplifing this IMCT-Nt. It is shown that the defined comprehensive mass action concentration of iron oxides NFetO is more accurate than the measured activity of iron oxides aFetO in characterizing the oxidation ability of the selected FetO-containing slag systems.

Sn-58Bi alloy particles and La 2 O 3 were mechanically mixed and melted to prepare the composite solder. The microstructures of the solder and the IMC grain sizes were analyzed. Morphology results showed that the adding of La 2 O 3 could restrain the segregation of Bi-rich phases and reduce the brittleness of the solder alloy. The hardness of solder increased with the addition of La 2 O 3 , which were tested by nano-indentation.

The main factors were studied which influence the titanium yield during a ferro-titanium alloying process. The inclusion phases and removal effect were comparatively analyzed before and after ferro-titanium alloying. When controlling the activity of oxygen (a[O]) before deoxidation below 350 × 10-6, the interval time between Al and Ti addition above 3 min can guarantee the titanium yield above 85%. With a[O] above 350 × 10-6, the interval time between Al and Ti addition should be extended more than 5 min. Extending the interval time between Al and Ti addition can improve the titanium yield at the same a[O] and [Al]s. During RH refining, Al2O3 inclusions with the equivalent diameter above 200 μm can float and be removed within 5 min, but the removal time of Al-Ti-O inclusions with the same size is 1 to 2 min more than pure Al2O3. Al-Ti-O complex inclusions form around Al2O3 after the titanium alloy being added into the melt, and the titanium yield decreases due to the formation of these inclusions.

Character Diagnosis for Surface-Wave Plasmas Excited by Surface Plasmon Polaritons

The plasma parameters of planar-type surface-wave plasmas （SWPs） are diagnosed based on the resonant excitation of surface plasmon polaritons （SPPs）. The plasma parameter distributions are obtained by changing the discharge conditions of gas pressure and incident power. The measured experimental results show that the plasma near the heating layer is excited by surface waves of SPPs while the plasma located downstream originates from diffusion Moreover, the influence of high-frequency oscillations plays a significant role in producing the proposed SWPs with bi-Maxwellian electron energy distributions.

Stochastic bounded consensus tracking of leader-follower multi-agent systems with measurement noises and sampled-data

This paper is concerned with the stochastic bounded consensus tracking problems of leader-follower multi-agent systems, where the control input of an agent can only use the information measured at the sampling instants from its neighbours or the virtual leader with a time-varying reference state, and the measurements are corrupted by random noises. The probability limit theory and the algebra graph theory are employed to derive the necessary and sufficient conditions guaranteeing the mean square bounded consensus tracking. It is shown that the maximum allowable upper boundary of the sampling period simultaneously depends on the constant feedback gains and the network topology. Furthermore, the effects of the sampling period on the tracking performance are analysed. It turns out that from the view point of the sampling period, there is a trade-off between the tracking speed and the static tracking error. Simulations are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the theoretical results.
