This paper presents a practical approach to implement the economic dispatch of the hydrothermal power system in Southern China. The proposed economic dispatch method first computes the initial generation plans for all generator units including hydro units, which are determined according to the equal incremental principal of hydrothermal system. The system loss is approximately considered during the calculation of the initial generation plan. Then, the mathematical model of the optimal dispatch, which considers the network loss and security constraints, is set up based on the initial operation point. The solution algorithm is the modified interior point method. For showing the effectiveness of the proposed approach, the practical hydrothermal power system in southern China is used for demonstration. The results show the feasibility of the proposed dispatch method.

This paper presents an approach to analyze the steady-state voltage change in distributed network with or without connection of Photovoltaic (PV) plant. Several scenarios are discussed: the voltage drop of distribution feeders with or without PV plant; the voltage impact in distributed network with different weather conditions; the impacts of PV power plant capacity on the voltage. A practical distribution system with PV plant in China is used for simulation. The results and analysis are reported.

After DGs are joined in the distribution network,a series of protection problem is brought out. The cooperation of now current protection,un-conspicuous fault character at DG and problem of drop-fuse are analyzed in the paper. In order to cope with the protection problems,the protection key is indicated in the paper. Protection configuration with communication and protection configuration without communication are presented in the paper. As a result,the fiber direction protection and the intellectualized feeder protection suit to the distribution network with DGs.

Optimal spare analysis for HVDC transmission systems

We discussed the optimal spare analysis for high-voltage-direct-current (HVDC) transmission system considering economy and reliability. Considering the capital, maintenance and the costumer interruption costs, we proposed an optimal model for spare components in HVDC based on the minimum cost. An enumeration-analytical method was proposed to solve this model based on the fact that there are usually only a few spare components in practical HVDC projects. A single 12-pulse winding HVDC transmission system was used for case studies. The spare analysis of AC filter, transformer, thyristor and smooth reactor were studied using cost-benefit method. The results show that the proposed model and calculation procedure can be applied to practical HVDC transmission systems in planning and design processes.

Weak parts of a HVDC transmission system can be recognized using sensitivity analysis, which has been an important technique for system reliability assessment and enhancement. A new sensitivity analysis method for HVDC system is proposed in this paper. The least square method is used to model the relationship of HVDC reliability indices varying with the reliability parameters of components. It can be used to obtain the sensitivity formula of system reliability indices with respect to parameters of system components. The concept of sensitivity curve and its analytical expression are also proposed. Based on the sensitivity curve, sensitivity indices can be estimated rapidly when the reliability parameters of components are changed. A single 12-pulse HVDC transmission system is used to illustrate the proposed method. Case studies indicate that the method is feasible and effective. Based on finite element method and the asymptotic boundary condition, the paper presents a new calculation method for unbounded field problem with complex parts by the domain-decomposition and iterative processes. Firstly, the field domain should be decomposed to two parts. One is the concerned domain with finer meshes, the other is the unbounded space domain with coarser meshes. And the two parts have a common domain. Secondly, the concerned domain and the unbounded space domain are calculated separately by the iterative process on the common domain based on the finite element method until the result become stable. This method uses less time to calculation the complex field model and has more accuracy on the concerned domain. It also makes the asymptotic boundary condition to get more accuracy than a further boundary without too much computing time. The paper calculates a 3D model of 800kV composite insulator with tower, conductors and shielding wires. Calculation on the composite insulator of ±800kV LHV DC transmission lines proves the advantage of the method. In the end, the verification tests show good agreement between calculations and measurements. © 2008 IEEE.

In the field of electrical power engineering, pattern recognition is commonly used for classification of defects caused of Partial Discharge (PD) in Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) in order to assess the insulated system in time. As phase information can't be acquired effectively using real wavelet transform for extracting features because of only real coefficients being existed, in this paper, the method of complex wavelet transform (CWT) for decomposing ultra-high frequency (UHF) PD signals is proposed;complex coefficient is constructed by combining the real part and imaginary part of complex wavelet coefficients which can describe PD signal integrally;and the features can be extracted from complex coefficients of each scale;additionally, optimal complex coefficients are selected by comparing Jsum criterion;Finally, PD samples are acquired through large number of experiments, and BP neural network is used to identify the PD sourced by four typical insulated defects effectively. The results show that the features extracted from the optimal compound coefficient corresponding to the best complex wavelet have wonderful results. © 2008 IEEE.

This paper presents a high performance direct torque control (DTC) theme for the induction motor (IM). To solve those problems associated with conventional DTC, such as high current , flux and torque ripple, variable switching frequency?the space vector modulation (SVM) is implemented in the DTC to guarantee the constant switching frequency of the inverter. Meanwhile, the design of a robust speed controller based on fuzzy sliding mode control (FSMC) is proposed, in which a fuzzy logic controller replaces the discontinuous part of the classical sliding mode control law. The simulation results of the proposed theme present good dynamic and steady-state performances as compared to the classical DTC with proportional-integral (PI) controller from aspects of the reduction of the torque ripple, the quickly dynamic torque response and robustness to disturbance.
