Bilestones are solid masses found in the gallbladder or biliary tract, which block the normal bile flow and eventually result in severe life-threatening complications. Studies have shown that bilestone formation may be related to bile flow dynamics and the concentration level of bile components. The bile flow dynamics in the biliary tract play a critical role in disclosing the mechanism of bile stasis and transportation. The concentration of bile composition is closely associated with processes such as nucleation and crystallization. Recently, microfluidic-based biosensors have been favored for multiple advantages over traditional bench-top detection assays for their less sample consumption, portability, low cost, and high sensitivity for real-time detection. Here, we reviewed the developments in bile dynamics study and microfluidics-based bile component detection methods. These studies may provide valuable insights into the bilestone formation mechanisms and better treatment, alongside our opinions on the future development of in vitro lithotriptic drug screening of bilestones and bile characterization tests. © 2023, CC BY.

This paper presents a low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) diplexer for 2.4/5-GHz applications. A simple schematic based on lumped-element lowpass and bandpass filters is proposed for realizing the diplexer. The lowpass filter is designed with a cut-off frequency of 3.7 GHz and three transmission zeros are generated to improve the out-of-band rejection. The bandpass filter is proposed with two transmission zeros locating at two sides of the passband. By using a complementary structure to combine the lowpass and bandpass filters, the LTCC diplexer is simulated with low insertion loss of smaller than 0.38 dB for 2.4 GHz application and 0.59-0.65 dB for 5-GHz application. The in-band isolation at the two operating bands are better than 20 dB, which is acceptable for many wireless applications. The presented LTCC diplexer has a circuit size is 1.0 × 0.5 × 0.35 mm3, which is very compact as compared to reported LTCC diplexers. © 2021 IEEE.

This paper presents the time-domain analysis of a fully differential incremental ∆Σ modulator. Particularly, the influence of the bipolar feedback signal on the quantization noise of the modulator is analyzed, which is overlooked in most IDC designs. Based on the analysis, an initial feedback zeroing scheme is introduced to decrease the quantization noise of the modulator. Moreover, the maximum number of output codeword that can be produced by the modulator is mathematically derived. Following the derivation, a control scheme is proposed to achieve 1.5-bit effective feedback without changing the quantizer and D/A topology. By applying the initial feedback zeroing and 1.5-bit feedback technique, quantization noise of the 1st- and 2nd-order modulators analyzed in this paper can be decreased by 4×, with very minor modifications on the modulator's original digital controllers. © 2020 IEEE

In this study, we established a visual detection method of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products on digital microfluidic chips. Using a recently established DNA amplification enhancer, we were able to apply the dsDNA-binding dyes in PCR at a remarkably high concentration and lifted the dyes' signal with positive samples. Excited with a UV pen or the mobile phone flashlight, the amplification results of on-chip PCR were easily visualized by naked eyes. © 2020 CBMS-0001

Compared with the plug-in electric vehicle (EV) charger, wireless EV charging is convenient and safe due to elimination of physical contact, thus being paid more attention recently. However, misalignment issues are inevitable in wireless EV charging scenarios because of positioning error, leading to unexpected output and low efficiency performance. This paper highlights two receiver-side control schemes, phase shift control and on-off keying modulation, which can achieve precise constant current output without the necessary of wireless communication with the transmitter-side. And the circuit is simplified. The power efficiency for variance of load and output ripple are comprehensively compared with theoretical analysis and simulation results at series-series compensation converter. The proposed two control modulations schemes can obtain stable current output, but phase shift control has precise output. © 2019 IEEE.

Despite the precise controllability of droplet samples in digital microfluidic(DMF)systems,their capability in isolating single cells for long-time culture is still limited:typically,only a few cells can be captured on an *** fabricating small-sized hydrophilic micropatches on an electrode aids single-cell capture,the actuation voltage for droplet transportation has to be significantly raised,resulting in a shorter lifetime for the DMF chip and a larger risk of damaging the *** this work,a DMF system with 3D microstructures engineered on-chip is proposed to form semi-closed micro-wells for efficient single-cell isolation and long-time *** optimum results showed that approximately 20%of the micro-wells over a 30×30 array were occupied by isolated single *** addition,low-evaporation-temperature oil and surfactant aided the system in achieving a low droplet actuation voltage of 36V,which was 4 times lower than the typical 150 V,minimizing the potential damage to the cells in the droplets and to the DMF *** exemplify the technological advances,drug sensitivity tests were run in our DMF system to investigate the cell response of breast cancer cells(MDA-MB-231)and breast normal cells(MCF-10A)to a widely used chemotherapeutic drug,Cisplatin(Cis).The results on-chip were consistent with those screened in conventional 96-well *** novel,simple and robust single-cell trapping method has great potential in biological research at the single cell level.

LC-coupling hybrid active power filter (LC-HAPF) is one of the most cost-effective solution for power quality problem in distribution networks, in which its performance is mainly affected by the current controller. Among the state-of-the-art current controllers for the LC-HAPF, the second-order sliding mode controller (SOSMC) performs a superior dynamic and steady-state performance simultaneously. However, the existing SOSMC design method did not consider the upper bound of the control parameters, which may lead to saturation effect and control performance degradation. In this paper, a SOSMC design method based on describing function (DF) is proposed, which contributes the upper bound design constraint. The DF control block diagram for the LC-HAPF enables frequency domain analysis of SOSMC. Moreover, the analytical upper bounds of the SOSMC's control parameters are provided to avoid the saturation effect. Finally, the advantages of the proposed SOSMC design based on DF are verified by simulation results compared with the existing SOSMC design method under low DC-link voltage condition.

To maintain high efficiency over a wide range of load, inductive power transfer (IPT) converter should have the ability of load impedance matching. Recently, a series-series compensated IPT converter with semi-active rectifier has been studied to output a constant voltage, while keep high efficiency by changing the load impedance and the operating frequency. However, the relationships among the power efficiency, output voltage and the load conditions are complicated and not intuitive, and also challenging the design and implementation of this converter. This paper proposes a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm to seek for the optimum modulation for constant voltage and high efficiency over a wide load range. This method is efficient, logical and intuitive, shortening over 95% of the conventional computation time. © 2019 IEEE.

This paper presents several techniques to enhance the resolution of sturdy multi-stage noise shaping (MASH) ΔΣ modulator (DSM). The proposed structure significantly suppresses the quantization noise (QN) by employing a high-resolution quantizer with a segmented MSB/LSB DAC feedback in the first loop as well as noise coupling techniques in both loops. Reducing QN of the first loop significantly decreases the output swings of the integrators, thus improving the stability of the first loop. Besides, the construction of one extra order shaping function mitigates the leakage of coarse QN introduced by a gain mismatch between MSB and LSB DACs of the high-resolution quantizer. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed architecture to achieve high resolution while employing low-gain op-amps for all integrators. © 2019 IEEE.

Screening drugs on biopsies from cancer patients can promote precision medicine, but is challenging due to limited tumor samples for cancer patients (especially at an early stage). With the advantage of small samples needed, digital microfluidics (DMF) emerged to be very prominent platform for drug screening. In this paper, a DMF platform was developed, for drug screening of primary biopsy samples from xenograft mouse breast cancer models. The on-chip individual mouse drug screening results matched well with the individual in-vivo tumor response, suggesting the effectiveness for rapid determination of the optimal effective drug for personalized cancer therapies based on DMF platform. © 2019 CBMS-0001.
