Large-scale natural or man-made disasters have the potential to cause great loss of life, human injury and extreme property damage. Evacuation from areas at risk is often one of the most feasible strategies that can be undertaken in response to these types of disasters. Evacuating a large population in the shortest possible time is an extremely complicated and difficult task, which urgently needs to look for ways to control the evacuation traffic flow efficiently and effectively in real-time. This paper, on the foundation of adaptive control theory, puts forward a traffic adaptive control framework for real time large-scale emergency evacuation, the characteristic of which integrates a method of prescriptive reference model and the adaptive control system. The prescriptive reference model is applied to specify, in a short-term and rolling-horizon manner, the desired traffic states, which serves as a reference point for the adaptive control. And the adaptive control system combines these desired states and the current prevailing traffic conditions collected by the sensing system to produce real time traffic control schemes. These traffic control schemes are implemented in the field to guide the real world traffic flow to evolve towards the desired states. © 2010 IEEE.

The possibility of regenerative braking is one inherent advantage of hybrid electric vehicle. The motor and the hydraulic braking system are braking together while the hybrid electric vehicle is braking. But, the difference of the braking force dynamic response between the motor and the hydraulic braking system will lead the inadequate or excessive braking and will effect the braking felling of the driver. In this paper, we analyze the braking dynamic characteristics of the motor and the hydraulic braking system. Then, we analyze the hybrid electric vehicle working patterns of the braking process and design the hierarchical structure of the braking force control system. After that, we propose the braking force coordinated control strategy based on using the hydraulic braking force to compensate the motor braking force during the braking process of the hybrid electric vehicle. This paper used the integrated feed-forward and feedback control to design the braking force coordinated control strategy. This integrated control can maintain the stability of the control system while reduce the system error and increase the dynamic performance of the system. The simulation results show that braking force dynamic coordinated control is effective and the total braking force can meet the desired braking force during the braking of the hybrid electric vehicle.

Two manipulators handling a flexible payload are studied based on adaptive backstepping control theory. Considering the complexity of the dynamic model, the obtained model is divided into a slow subsystem describing the large rigid motion and a fast subsystem expressing the elastic vibration by singular perturbation theory. A cooperative controller is designed based on adaptive backstepping control. The slow subsystem can complete system trajectory tracking performance. The fast subsystem can suppress the elastic vibration of the system. Stability of the system is proved by using Lyapunov stability theory. The validity of the proposed scheme is demonstrated by simulations. © 2010 IEEE.

Study on coordination model of variable speed control and on-ramp metering for urban expressway

Based on the on-ramp metering and main road variable speed control, their coordination strategy of control and guidance was suggested. A traffic flow model of the expressway under the speed guidance condition was derived and an optimal coordination function to maximize the expressway service capacity and minimize the ramp queue delay was built. The simple numerical example was validated with VISSIM simulation software. The results show that implementation of the coordinated control of variable speed and on-ramp metering can increase the traffic flow capacity and decrease the average travel time.

Dielectric barrier discharge excitated by unipolar pulsed power is a promising approach for producing non-thermal plasma at atmospheric pressure. A magnetic compression solid-state pulse power generator is used to produce dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). The generator is capable of providing repetitive pulses with the voltage of up to 30 kV and duration of 70 ns at a 300 resistive load. This paper illustrates electrical characteristic and luminous emissions of DBD excitated by repetitive unipolar nanosecond-pulses in atmospheric air. Different from common DBD excitated by high-voltage AC sources, discharge current of DBD in the experimental investigation can be on an order of tens of amperes. When the DBD is created using two liquid electrodes, the luminous emissions from the obverse and flank sides of liquid electrodes show that no filament is observed and the discharge is homogeneous and diffuse in the whole discharge regime. © 2010 IEEE.

If the microgrid is stroke by lightning, the lightning overvoltage which transferred though distribution transformer has great influence on the safety of the microgrid. The models of microgrid and high-frequency transformers are established based on the electromagnetic transient calculation program PSCAD/EMTDC. The transferred overvoltage with different lightning strike position in microgrid is researched in this paper. The effect of surge arresters on restricting overvoltage is also analyzed. The simulation results show that surge arresters must be installed at both sides of transformer due to the high overvoltage when the transformer has no load. If the transformer is connected with cables, the overvoltage will be reduced. The longer the cable is, the lower the overvoltage is. The types of loads have a little influence on the overvoltage.

A vehicle wheel hydraulic cylinder pressure estimation algorithm was presented based on query mode, and a control algorithm of brake actuator with pressure feedback was devised for electronic stability program(ESP). The relationship between the duty ratio of wheel cylinder solenoid valves for increasing and decreasing pressure and the pressure in the wheel cylinder was established using hardware-in-the-loop tests. A wheel hydraulic cylinder pressure estimation algorithm was achieved. The tests showed that the estimated cylinder pressures are in good agreement with their actual values, and the proposed ESP with feedback by estimated pressure improves the vehicle handling and stability performance at extreme steering conditions.

Energy Efficiencies of Industrial Sectors for China's Major Cities

Improving of eco-efficiency is propitious for resource saving and emission reduction, and thus become a popular way to sustainable development. Industry is the main source of energy consumption and GHGS emissions of China, thus analyzing of energy efficiencies for industrial sectors of major cities may provide essential information for restructuring of industrial system and energy saving & emission reduction. In this article, based on a framework of relationship between industry and its environment, the energy consumption by industry (or its sectors) is taken as environmental impact, and the energy efficiency is defined. Chongqing, Guangzhou and Tianjin are selected as the major cities, their present industrial engery efficiencies are estimated as 0.527, 0.946, and 1.019 wanyuan/ktce, respectively. On the basis of statistic data, the present energy efficiencies of 39 industrial sectors for the three selected cities are estimated. The results show that the eco-efficiencies of 39 industry sectors are equilibrium in sectors and cities, which exhibites that the order of industrial sectors in energy efficiency will vary with cities, and even for a same industry sector, the energy efficiency may have several folds of difference for different cities. Meanwhile, for a same city, the values of energy efficiency for different industrial sectors may range from centuplicate to several thousand folds. It indicates that there is a great possibility for energy saving & emission reduction in restructuring of industry system.

The cable and transformer are important distribution equipment in Microgrid. Due to the low insulation level, the insulation of them is easily damaged by lightning. The models of high-frequency transformer and the calculation model of induced lightning with transmission line based on electromagnetic transient calculation software PSCAD / EMTDC are designed in this paper. The lightning protection of cables and transformer in Microgrid, the transferred overvoltage of transformer and the effect of the length of cables and the load types to overvoltage level are researched. The conclusion shows that the induced overvoltage and transferred overvoltage could be reduced efficiently after installing surge arrester at the cables and transformer, but the direct lightning overvoltage is not reduced in the safety range; The longer the cables, the lower the overvoltage is; The inductively load can reduce the overvoltage level slightly while the capacitive and resistance loads has no influence.

Carbon emissions from energy combustion in rural China

Carbon emissions from rural energy combustion have not been successfully addressed in the existing accounting system since incomplete data of rural energy consumption and exclusion of emissions from combustion of biofuels in the sectoral or national totals to avoid double counting. Presented in this paper were estimations of CO 2 emissions from fuel combustions in rural areas of China from 1979 to 2007 and analysis of their contributions to national energy related CO 2 emissions, to highlight the important role rural energy plays in regard to climate change and potential capacity for carbon abatement in rural areas. The temporal variations of CO 2 emission in rural areas was also analyzed with regard to total emissions, intensity and source structure, which could provide a novel perspective to our GHGs reduction strategies and related policy making. The results showed that the CO 2 emissions in rural China have constantly increased from 8.89×10 8 tons in 1979 to 28.74×10 8 tons in 2007. Commercial energy has become the dominant force of CO2 emissions in rural China, most of which is mainly derived from the consumption of coal and electricity. The proportion of carbon emissions from rural areas to nationwide underwent an inverted U-curve trend if biomass energy was ignored, with a peak at 47.40% in 2000. The situation becomes absolutely different when considering about biomass. For a long time (from 1979 to 2001), rural energy related carbon emissions has maintained a greatly high proportion in total carbon emissions with a fluctuations between 45.13% and 56.31%. The proportion of carbon emission in rural areas has declined since 2002, but still up 40.99% in 2007.
