The cost of a cathode and/or catalyst in a microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) is one of the main factors that must be considered before its application in a reactor. More than 45 % of total MEC cost is contributed by cathode material. Currently, platinum (Pt) has become the primary option as cathode or catalyst in MEC because it has superior catalytic properties for hydrogen evolution reaction. The high-price of Pt and its prone to being poisoned by the buffer in the electrolyte, calls for an alternative cathode or catalyst study. Some non-precious metals such as nickel (Ni), titanium (Ti), stainless steel (SS) and composites were explored to replace Pt. Among these materials, Ni is one of the best options because it has excellent catalytic properties, inexpensive, commercially available, less over-potential, and less toxic to living organisms. In most reports, Ni was applied in MEC to produce hydrogen from wastewater which showed comparable performance to Pt. This paper reviews the current status and future prospect of Ni performance as the cathode or catalyst in MEC for hydrogen production, based on the hydrogen cathodic recovery and production rate. © 2022. The engineering application under industrial big-data analysis is of great significance for improving the optimization effect of enterprise production process control processes. By analyzing the operating principle of the semi-automatic mill and studying its control optimization strategy, based on the operational data of the SAG mill, industrial big-data analysis is adopted to self-learning its control optimization rules. Firstly, SPSS is used to preprocess the high-dimensional process data generated during the operation of the semi-automatic mill. Four parameters, namely power, axial pressure, grinding sound, and grinding concentration, are preliminarily selected. Then, PCA is used to screen and reduce the dimensionality of multidimensional data, and K-Means clustering algorithm is used to classify and identify the reduced dataset. After simulation research, the results show that PCA can reduce the redundancy of SAG mill operation data, and the control optimization rules formed by self-learning can serve as operational guidance for improving the efficiency and energy-saving of SAG mill operation. The effectiveness can be further verified in practical engineering applications in the later stage.

β-cyclodextrin-based nanosponges for crocetin delivery: Physicochemical characterization, aqueous solubility, and bioactivity

Crocetin (CRT) is a natural carotenoid compound with promising health benefits but its use is restricted because of the poor aqueous solubility. Therefore, cyclodextrin-based nanosponges (CDNSs), a kind of water-soluble supramolecular macrocyclic polymer, was employed to load CRT for improving the solubility. The β-CDNSs with different molar ratio of β-CD and crosslinker were synthesized and β-CDNS 1:8 was chosen. The loading capacity (LC) and complexation efficiency (CE) of prepared CRT-loaded β-CDNS were about 17.92% and 94.64%. The formation of inclusion and non-inclusion structure of CRT-loaded β-CDNS was confirmed by different techniques. The surface properties and dispersibility were also studied. Besides, the water solubility of CRT was significantly increased to 7.27 μg/mL. The antioxidant activity of CRT was enhanced. The in vitro cytotoxicity of CRT for normal cells was reduced and for tumor cells was increased through the loading of β-CDNS. In summary, this work demonstrated β-CDNS could be used for the delivery of CRT and promote the application of CRT in many fields. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

A Decomposition-Based Evolutionary Algorithm With Clustering and Hierarchical Estimation for Multi-Objective Fuzzy Flexible Jobshop Scheduling

As an effective approximation algorithm for multi-objective jobshop scheduling, multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) have received extensive attention. However, maintaining a balance between the diversity and convergence of non-dominated solutions while ensuring overall convergence is an open problem in the context of solving Multi-objective Fuzzy Flexible Jobshop Scheduling Problems (MFFJSPs). To address it, we propose a new MOEA named MOEA/DCH by introducing a hierarchical estimation method, a clustering-based adaptive decomposition strategy, and a heuristic-based initialization method into a basic MOEA based on decomposition. Specifically, a hierarchical estimation method balances the convergence and diversity of non-dominant solutions by integrating Pareto dominance and scalarization function information. A clustering-based adaptive decomposition strategy is constructed to enhance the population’s ability to approximate a complex Pareto front. A heuristic-based initialization method is developed to provide high-quality initial solutions. The performance of MOEA/DCH is verified and compared with five competitive MOEAs on widely-tested benchmark datasets. Empirical results demonstrate the effectiveness of MOEA/DCH in balancing the diversity and convergence of non-dominated solutions while ensuring overall convergence. IEEE

*** Chemotherapy is the traditional treatment for clinical cancer patient[1,2].However,the therapeutic effect is often severely limited by the multidrug resistance(MDR)[3,4],which was commonly mediated by inactivating drugs,increasing efflux,stimulating DNA repair mechanisms,and/or activating detoxification pathways[5-7].Recent studies are committing to develop reasonable strategies for intervention of the molecular pathways mediating MDR,of which P-glycoprotein(P-gp)has been widely investigated[8].So far,several kinds of P-gp inhibitors,including verapamil[9],vitamin E[10],cyclosporin A[11],and small interfering RNA(siRNA)[12].

This paper investigates the fault-tolerant control problem for the multi-input multi-output nonlinear systems with unknown dynamics and process faults. The process faults together with the unknown dynamics lead to dynamic uncertainties in the plant, such that the commonly used approximation techniques fail to be applied straightforward. To overcome this challenge, a novel fault-tolerant prescribed performance control scheme is developed in this paper. Except for the known control direction of the plant, no prior knowledge of the system model and the process faults is involved in the control law. Even so, there is no need to invoke the techniques for function approximation, parameter identification, disturbance estimation, fault detection, fault estimation, fault isolation, etc. The proposed controller guarantees reference tracking with the predefined transient and steady-state performance. The simulation results manifest the effectiveness and the advantage of the controller.

We present an intensive study of the deactivation mechanism of titanosilicates in epoxidation of allyl chloride to epichlorohydrin. Besides the generally accepted physical deactivation of titanosilicates caused by pore blocking, the product epichlorohydrin is the main reason for the deactivation of titanosilicates, in which the epoxy group undergoes a ring-opening reaction to form the poisoning species-bidentate ether species. Besides the acidity of titanosilicates and titanosilicates/H2O2, the effect of the properties of reactants and products on the formation of bidentate ether species was investigated. The reactant ALC is susceptible to ionization and the formation of new Brønsted acid, which accelerates the deactivation of titanosilicates. From the epoxide perspective, other groups in the vicinity of the epoxy group also have an effect on the formation of the bidentate ether species. In general, the formation of the bidentate ether species is promoted by the electron-donating groups and inhibited by the electron-absorbing groups. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Electrocatalytic reduction of CO (CORR) provides a feasible way for not only CO2 conversion via tandem CO2-to-CO-to-C2+ process but also CO utilization from industrial exhaust gases. In this work, poly(ionic liquid) modified Cu catalyst (Cu@PIL) was employed as the electrocatalyst to convert low concentration CO gas to high-value C2+ products. An over 90% faradaic efficiency of C2+ products (FEC2+) was obtained at a constant current density of 125.0 mA cm–2 within a broad range of feedstock concentrations from 100.0 to 40.0 vol%. Remarkably, excellent comprehensive performance was achieved with feeding CO gas as less as 5.0 vol%, delivering a high FEC2+ of 71.1% with high CO conversion (67.4%) and high energetic efficiency (29.1%). Mechanistic studies suggest the local enrichment of CO via strong adsorption and accelerated mass transfer by porous PIL layer as well as the suppression of hydrogen evolution reaction enables the CO-to-C2+ transformation with diluted CO gas. © 2022, The Authors.
