The adiabatic film effectivenessηof the counter-inclined film-holes fed by varying internal coolant intake on the turbine vane leading edge model was experimentally investigated.A semi-cylinder model was adopted to model the vane leading edge which was arranged with two-row holes,which located at±15°on both *** four Leading edge model with the combinations of hole-shape(simple holes and laid-back holes)and intake structure(plenum and impingement)were tested under four blowing ratios M of 0.5,1.0,1.5,and ***ηcontours were obtained by the transient measurement technique based on double thermochromic *** results present that theηis sensitive to the M for the four studied leading edge *** addition of impingement enhances theηfor the two studied *** film jets make the coolant-flow closed to the target surface,resulting in higherηunder lower *** core with higherηappears in the downstream area of ***ηenhancement can be provided to almost the identical level by adding the impingement-holes and improving the hole-exit shaping in most *** increasing M,the jets with stronger exit normal momentum penetrate into the *** impingement addition may be a more effective program to upgrade theηrelatively to the exit shaping under larger ***,the laid-back holes with impingement case produce the highest film cooling performance among the four cases,providing great potential in the leading edge especially under larger M.

Explainable transfer learning for subsurface soil moisture prediction

Soil moisture is a crucial component of hydrologic processes, influencing runoff generation, land–atmosphere interactions, and water resource management. Deep learning models have been implemented to predict soil moisture with existing large datasets. Transfer learning allows these models to be pre-trained in data-rich regions and applied to data-sparse areas to reduce reliance on local data. However, the mechanisms of how the prior knowledge is transferred and adapted to new regions remain unclear. In this study, a long short-term memory (LSTM) network was trained to predict subsurface soil moisture from surface data in the Yellow River Basin (YRB), and then transferred to an in-situ measurement site at a humid headwater catchment, Jianpinggou (JPG). Despite the significant differences, the transferred model outperformed the model trained with local data only, and showed further improvement after fine-tuning with a small number of in-situ measurements. Explainable artificial intelligence method, the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) was used to interpret the models developed during the transfer learning process. The SHAP values showed that, as the model transferred from arid to humid region, the influence of evapotranspiration-related factors decreased significantly, the impacts of precipitation also stopped rising with amount, while the impact of surface soil moisture increased. It suggests that the dominant mechanism has changed from infiltration and evaporation due to climate forcing in arid/semi-arid area to fluxes within soil matrix in humid spot. Our results demonstrate that interpretating models during the transfer learning process uncovers the evolution in model rationale, enhancing the validation of model’s physical reliability, revealing the shift in underlying mechanisms across climates and spatial scales, which could also provide more detailed correlations for causal analysis in future work.

In this study, the consensus problem for a class of second-order multi-agent systems with nonuniform time delays is investigated. A linear consensus protocol is used to make all agents reach consensus and move with a constant velocity. By a frequency-domain analysis, a simplified sufficient condition is given to guarantee the consensus stability of the dynamic system. Finally, the effectiveness of the obtained theoretical results is illustrated through numerical simulations.

Constructing Edge-Colored Graph for Heterogeneous Networks

In order to build a fault-tolerant network, heterogeneous facilities are arranged in the network to prevent homogeneous faults from causing serious damage. This paper uses edge-colored graph to investigate the features of a network topology which is survivable after a set of homogeneous devices malfunction. We propose an approach to designing such networks under arbitrary parameters. We also show that the proposed approach can be used to optimize inter-router connections in network-on-chip to reduce the additional consum!otion of energy and time delay.

Adsorption characteristics of a novel ceramsite for heavy metal removal from stormwater runoff

Urban sediments have rapidly increased in recent years around the world,and their effective management has become an important *** remove heavy metals from stormwater runoff and use sediments as a resource,a novel ceramsite was developed using sewer pipe sediments(SPS),river bed sediments(RBS),urban water supply treatment sludge(WSTS),and wastewater treatment plant excess sludge(WWTS).The optimal composition was determined based on the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller specific surface area and an orthogonal test *** adsorption characteristics of the novel ceramsite for dissolved heavy metals(Cu^(2+)and Cd^(2+)) were investigated through adsorption isotherms and kinetic experiments at(25±1)℃.Both Cu^(2+) and Cd^(2+) were effectively removed by the novel ceramsite,and their equilibrium adsorption was 4.96 mg·g^(-1) and 3.84 mg·g^(-1),*** isotherms and a pseudo-first-order kinetic equation described the adsorption process better than other *** analysis of the ceramsite composition before and after heavy metal adsorption showed that the Cu^(2+) and Cd^(2+) contents in the ceramsite increased after *** results revealed that adsorption is both a physical and chemical process,and that ceramsite can be used as a bioretention medium to remove heavy metals from stormwater runoff while simultaneously converting problematic urban sediments into a resource.

Camera-equipped underwater vehicle-manipulator systems (UVMS) can achieve autonomous underwater operations through visual servoing. However, current methods excessively rely on auxiliary means for target's visual information and do not sufficiently consider the target's pose when designing visual servoing schemes. As a result, UVMS can only perform dynamic positioning or grasp simple-shaped targets like sea urchins. In this article, we are devoted to making the UVMS autonomously complete more complex underwater operations, such as valve switching and pipe handling. First, an underwater target perception system is proposed to address the issue of discontinuous target position estimation caused by various interferences. Second, a deep neural network-based grasping mechanism controller is proposed to enable the manipulator to grasp targets in various initial poses using the target image. Third, a decoupled visual servoing scheme is proposed for the motion control of the UVMS, and in collaboration with a designed task supervisor to ensure that the UVMS can complete the underwater operation autonomously. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed methods, underwater experiments are conducted based on a UVMS prototype. The UVMS succeeds to autonomously switch different types of valves and handle the pipe. Experiments conducted under dynamic currents validated the reliability and robustness of the proposed methods. © 1996-2012 IEEE.

Proving Cypher Query Equivalence

Graph database systems store graph data as nodes and relationships, and utilize graph query languages (e.g., Cypher) for efficiently querying graph data. Proving the equivalence of graph queries is an important foundation for optimizing graph query performance, ensuring graph query reliability, etc. Although researchers have proposed many SQL query equivalence provers for relational database systems, these provers cannot be directly applied to prove the equivalence of graph queries. The difficulty lies in the fact that graph query languages (e.g., Cypher) adopt significantly different data models (property graph model vs. relational model) and query patterns (graph pattern matching vs. tabular tuple calculus) from SQL. In this paper, we propose GraphQE, an automated prover to determine whether two Cypher queries are semantically equivalent. We design a U-semiring based Cypher algebraic representation to model the semantics of Cypher queries. Our Cypher algebraic representation is built on the algebraic structure of unbounded semirings, and can sufficiently express nodes and relationships in property graphs and complex Cypher queries. Then, determining the equivalence of two Cypher queries is transformed into determining the equivalence of the corresponding Cypher algebraic representations, which can be verified by SMT solvers. To evaluate the effectiveness of GraphQE, we construct a dataset consisting of 148 pairs of equivalent Cypher queries. With the explosive growth of information, more and more organizations are deploying private cloud systems or renting public cloud systems to process big data. However, there is no existing benchmark suite for evaluating cloud performance on the whole system level. To the best of our knowledge, this paper proposes the first benchmark suite CloudRank-D to benchmark and rank cloud computing sys- tems that are shared for running big data applications. We an- alyze the limitations of previous metrics, e.g., floating point operations, for evaluating a cloud computing system, and propose two simple metrics： data processed per second and data processed per Joule as two complementary metrics for evaluating cloud computing systems. We detail the design of CloudRank-D that considers representative applications, di- versity of data characteristics, and dynamic behaviors of both applications and system software platforms. Through experi- ments, we demonstrate the advantages of our proposed met- tics. In several case studies, we evaluate two small-scale de- ployments of cloud computing systems using CloudRank-D.

Accelerating Iterative Big Data Computing Through MPI

Current popular systems, Hadoop and Spark, cannot achieve satisfied performance because of the inefficient overlapping of computation and communication when running iterative big data applications. The pipeline of computing, data movement, and data management plays a key role for current distributed data computing systems. In this paper, we first analyze the overhead of shuffle operation in Hadoop and Spark when running PageRank workload, and then propose an event-driven pipeline and in-memory shuffle design with better overlapping of computation and communication as DataMPI- Iteration, an MPI-based library, for iterative big data computing. Our performance evaluation shows DataMPI-Iteration can achieve 9X-21X speedup over Apache Hadoop, and 2X-3X speedup over Apache Spark for PageRank and K-means.
